Wolfsburg, September 9, 2015 – At the beginning of 2016, the iconic sporty compact—the Golf GTI—celebrates its 40th birthday. Volkswagen will mark this historic event with a dramatic special edition: the new Golf GTI Clubsport. Volkswagen will present the production version at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, offering a first look at the most powerful production GTI ever.
The company that invented the GTI is thus continuing the tradition of anniversary models, as exclusive special editions also marked the 20th, 25th, 30th and 35th birthdays. The turbocharged and direct-injection engine in the anniversary model delivers an output of 195 kW / 265 PS, 35 PS more than the previous most powerful Golf GTI. That isn’t all, however. For a short time—for about 10 seconds—the driver can increase engine power by an additional 10 per cent to more than 290 PS using an overboost function. This added power is activated simply by pressing the throttle fully.
The Golf GTI Clubsport sprints from 0 to 62 mph in 6.0 seconds with a 6-speed manual gearbox; with the optional 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DSG), the time is reduced to 5.9 seconds. The Golf GTI Clubsport has a top speed of 155 mph with both transmissions. Despite all this power and performance, the car is frugal: the manual transmission car has fuel consumption of 33.8 mpg (equivalent to 160 g/km CO2), which improves to 34.8 mpg (155 g/km CO2) with the DSG gearbox.
Not only has the anniversary model got more power, but Volkswagen has also extensively revised the design, equipment and aerodynamics. Due to the high power output and significantly improved downforce, the Golf GTI Clubsport has groundbreaking handling properties at high speeds and breathtaking cornering speeds.
The Golf GTI Clubsport is painted in “Oryx White” (other colors available), with the roof contrasting in black. The exterior designers created a completely new front bumper, new side sills, a new rear diffuser, a new multi-part roof spoiler and exclusive forged aluminum-alloy wheels for the anniversary model. These features immediately make the anniversary model stand out from the regular GTI models.
In terms of style, the side profile of the Golf GTI Clubsport is based on the original GTI: the first generation was characterized by a wide black trim stripe on the side between the front and rear wheelarches at sill level. This stripe is replicated on the side of the anniversary model, paying homage to the 1976 Golf GTI, and is enhanced with “Clubsport” lettering. The black trim stripe is continued at the front around the air scoop incorporated in the front bumper. The optional “Brescia” 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels were specially designed for the new Golf GTI Clubsport , while the standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are also a new design. Another special detail is the high-gloss black door mirror caps.
The redesigned roof spoiler, honed in the wind tunnel, is much larger than its counterpart on the current GTI. There is a narrow gap between the black roof area and the wing-like spoiler placed above it. The roof spoiler is finished in high-gloss black on the underside with “Oryx White” above the roof line. The lower rear section of the car has also been individualized. The redesigned, chrome-plated twin tailpipes have been elegantly integrated in the diffuser; the diameter of the tailpipes is much larger than on the regular Golf GTI models. The LED rear lights are finished in dark black-red.
The interior features iconic details that are essential for every GTI, including ergonomic sport seats featuring tartan fabric upholstery, red stitching, a golf-ball-shaped shifter knob and black headliner. These sporty features have been modified for the Golf GTI Clubsport: the seats are folding racing buckets instead of sport seats, for instance, and are partially covered with Alcantara and feature a honeycomb pattern on the backrests and seat cushions. A red line enhances the seat belts. New trim strips in “Honeycomb 40” design on the instrument panel, center console and doors give the interior an even more exclusive appearance. Sporty decorative features include Alcantara trim on the shift lever, an Alcantara sport steering wheel (with GTI emblem, red seam and 12 o'clock marking) and customized floor mats with red edging. When the driver and front passenger open the doors, they see unique stainless steel kick plates with red GTI lettering.

Interesting.
Looking forward to pictures before I decide on 40th anniversary or R as the next Golf
-
Pictures here, I am looking forward to seeing it in the flesh on Friday
http://www.autoblog.com/2015/09/09/vw-gti-clubsport-frankfurt-official/
I really like this and think in more door may be an ideal daily
-
The best part about it are the seats which are awesome. The rest of it is ok, wheels are too busy, rear spoiler looks odd and not convinced about the decals down the side. It will be interesting to see how they price this as there's not a great deal between the GTI and R as it stands. If they price it too closely to the R then what's the point - surely you would take the R any day of the week.
Hopefully if they facelift the R in the middle of its cycle they will introduce those seats.
-
I like that a lot, but feel it ought to have some motorsport style wheels as opposed to something from the Ripspeed section of Halfords.
I'd take one over an .:R if I had to make a choice.
-
I actually prefer this to the R in many ways.
A decent set of lightweight 18s and this will look spot on
-
In theory it will be priced between the GTI and R aswell. £27-8k?
-
I like that a lot - thanks for the info! Apart from the tacky Halfords special black stripe down the side, I love the rest of it. Seats are excellent!
Very interested to see where they price it....
-
Pricing will be difficult unless they increase standard spec on r and then increase price.
Wouldn't mind this - love the seats but not sure of the rims. Wouldn't mind some lightweight rims on this or maybe bbs/oz.
It's different though but Defo want to see it in the flesh. Presumably it's a limited run.
-

Now I like that as it harks back to the Mk1 and even think it could have been wider, although as it is, it continues the line of the black front bumper moldings.

Liking this a lot.

We all know it's not lol....unfortunately

I am interested to see the options I can configure it with, and the price? However for not a lot more you can get an R. I am hoping they also show the R400 at Frankfurt to see if there are anymore bits of info on whether it will see the light of day and how much it will cost. If the rumors are true and it has been delayed until 2017, assuming it does make it to production I could save up enough money to probably afford it as long as the price is not too ridiculous. However getting back to the Clubsport GTI it is tempting but seeing as I already own an Oryx White GTI with a high spec, there is something niggling at the back of my head that there is not enough difference to part with the money and go for it. Guess I will wait and see what it's like once officially released at Frankfurt before making my mind up.
-
Limited or anniversary edition always equal win when it comes to residuals
Clubsport will be a hoot and the interior will feel special, i could see me hooning one of these around on a track day more than a R400
-
Reading the press release it will be available in other colours may be red for me.
It's worth the change for me considering 3 years are up by the time this comes about. More and more I look at the rims the more I think
Would like to see one in the 5 door guise. Also this one doesn't appear to have the ACC sensor in the front bumper
-
Liking this a lot.
I'm liking that fact that you actually remembered to include the photos this time round!
Oh, and you got it in the right section too. You could get good at this...
Wonder what bhp it'll actually put out - the Leon Cupra has recently been upgraded to 290 from 280 (but most likely both tunes are really 300 the same as the Golf R).
-
Only because I didn't start this press release thread
-
Certainly very interesting and a lot more unique than the ED35.
Lots of special bits on it by the sounds of it but I wonder if the bucket seats will be optional.
Wonder if it'll be three door only too being as it's a Clubsport rather than an 'Edition'.
Hopefully that standard 18's will look a lot nicer than those 19's.
Things I particularly like - the interior for sure. Maybe a bit overkill but very very nice and very exclusive.
I like the return of the side stripe.
Things I don't really like - the front bumper looks a bit awkward in all the pics I;ve seen. Hopefully it'll look better in the flesh.
Shame they didn't use the oval tailpipes from the Cupra.
As wigit says, it'll hold its value well for sure with all those little features and will be quite an exclusive car.
The R has become far from exclusive (great car that it is). I had to pop down to a hire car company this afternoon and noticed the staff were taking a great interest in mine (thankfully it was clean). They thought at first it was one of theirs as they've just either ordered or about to take delivery of 21 R's according to the manager I was chatting to.
-
Also this one doesn't appear to have the ACC sensor in the front bumper
If its a pre production mule then it wont have the acc sensor. None of the first demo 7's over here had acc sensors either but the production ones did. I'd be amazed if it didnt have it all.

Got to say Red does look an option for me now.
Dave
-
Im struggling to tell if both the "u" drls in the headlights are working..? Are there any pictures around that show them..?
Ken
-
The black roof on the red one makes it look fantastic!
I like the look of the seats, but would be concerned as to whether or not they are practical for a daily user.
Five door would be nice, but I doubt that's going to happen - simply because the press release talks about "folding racing buckets instead of sport seats".
Certainly very nice - a bit sporty without looking totally trashy (unlike the mock ups we'd seen so far!)
-
The lack of five doors would make my decision much clearer, if this were the case? In regards to the double U DRL's I have seen pics with both single and double U's on the Clubsport GTI. It is unclear as to which it will be. Lets hope with all the extras this will be one of them. Although they look great, the single U DRL's come across as if the looks of the GTI are bit incomplete when the DRL's are on.
-
It will be interesting to see how standard the ride height is.....all the pictures show its lower than a GTI. I wander if they are "staged" for the promotional pictures or is it actually lower..??
Ken
-
Until we see a production ready model we may not know for sure the answer to any of our questions. Will watch out for pics of Frankfurt Motor Show to see if it holds some answers.
-
I thought it was strange that others were thinking it came with a roll cage in a previous thread. I wished it did, but I haven't seen mention of it, Looks like every other car at the Ring pre-production as the cars are fitted with cages for the safety of the working drivers on test.
They don't mention any weight saving so I guess its only a power increase, with possibly only a map and cosmetic upgrades?
The photos are clearly all shopped and even the "ring images" appear fake, my guess is the car won't sit that low as the photo of the driver turning left and the photo from the left shows the ride height the same as all the rest. It must sit flatter than a P1, or its all shop'd images from the ET/offset to the ride height.
Shame as they really had a chance to produce a lighter "Sub 8" style car with light rims and a little weight saving to justify the CS badge but didn't manage pull it off.
Does it justify a Club Sport Badge? Or would it be better not pretending and just putting Anniversary XX on it?
-
I quite like it, especially the seats and like the Clubsport decal on the side but that will probably look better on some colours than others. I even like the spoiler, but hate those wheels. It's got much more about it than the standard GTI. Agree with Mr Ex about the front bumper looking a bit weird, as it's sort of the other way to a standard GTI, but it does add some additional intent to the front.
Hope not too much is lost when it comes to the production model. Look forward to seeing wigit's pics from Frankfurt.
Unsurprisingly a very similar thread on vwroc today has met with apathetic and dismissive response.
-
i think carbon grey would mean the CS bits are nice and subtle, through in some gloss black light 18s and some Sport Pilots and i think a great car
this is tempting me instead of the Polo lol
-
The wheels on that red one look like R Pretoria's?
-
The wheels on that red one look like R Pretoria's?
Its a test car mate so they fit something from the VW parts bins to get the job done. Sometimes they fit odd wheels and allsorts to the car tbh
-
That red has got me sitting up. That is the colour I want this in (if I am able to secure one)
I really hope they do a 5 door as we are hoping to increase the size of the family soon fan a three door with a young one and a baby wouldn't be feasible.
-
I know it's not a major consideration, but any ideas why the fuel consumption is so rubbish? 34 mpg makes the R with 40 mpg look positively frugal. 34 mpg = 25-28 in the real world. These figures look like the previous EA113 motor.
-
I even like the spoiler, but hate those wheels.
I sincerely hope you don't hate those wheels as you're due a set - they are definitely Prets, probably the reason your R has been taking so long (maybe that's why you hate them).
-

There#s always the possibility that the ACC sensor is housed in the VW badge as it is on the Passat - more likely though is this mule doesn't have it on.
-

Was referring to the wheels on the white Clusport in the original post. I know the wheels on the red CS are Prets. Have lost no love for them despite the wait. Sorry to disappoint you.
The CS looks superb in red with the black gloss roof and accents, and if I was going to go for one (which I'm not) that could tempt me away from my usual favourites - DBP or CG.
-
German cars don't have ACC as standard, so no Radar. Same as when we saw the first mk7's come out.
Apart from the ride height and possibly some things being options for us in UK, that's what your going to get. Its not shopped.

As Graham says ^^^^^
This (as with previous anniversary models) is a Leon Cupra engine, so look at the emissions and economy stats for that engine.
Leon Cupras tend to have detuned R engines (allegedly detuned at least, I've seen graphs that suggest otherwise).
It's easy for VW to drop an already type approved engine into an identical chassis from another marque under the group umbrella and have been doing so for decades. The original GTI having an Audi 80 GTE engine with slightly different ancilliary bits to fit a transverse chassis for example.
Note the air intakes on the GTI CS in more or less the same place as the R and no fogs just like the R because of this, which is mirrored in the Cupra.
As Dave says, the radar is missing from the CS just like on the launch GTIs as its a worldwide unveiling and the ACC isn't standard in all markets. The radar will make the front end look even more busy so it's omitted from press launch shots. No doubt it will be standard in the UK as per the rest of the range.
It's quite likely the bucket seats will be pretty much the same seats as the optional ones on the Leon Cupra too, just with different fabric obviously.
Unlike the edition 30 and 35 at least the CS will have the Cupra's brakes too (same as PP, 7R, S3 etc).

Off topic but I still cant believe that the ed30/35 doesn't have the cupra brakes, shocking tbh given the extra weight of the dsg most of them had.
Annnnnyyyway, whose gonna be the first to start stockpiling ED40 badges to make a profit to eager members in the coming year?

I think this is my issue with it. On the one hand the car looks stunning, it's a proper model variant rather than just sticking a 40 badge on the side. On the other, why 'clubsport' - let us have carbon bonnet, lighter interior parts, light wheels, no back seats, 3 door only, optional track pack etc.
I still want one though

If you look at the front bumper of the latest Polo GTI it has the same sort of lines to the CS (going the opposite way to the Golf GTI).
I think VW are gradually easing a new corporate face in for the GTI with slight changes on each facelift.
The MK6 moved slightly away from the Beetle nose of the mk5 but kept the U shape lower grille and the mk7 followed a similar pattern moving it even more to a flatter wider face like the (uglier) new Passat. My guess is the mk8 GTI will have a nose along the same lines at the CS & Polo GTI (and R for that matter) with more of an X than a U.
-

VW hinted for years about bringing out a lightweight GTI with carbon panels, and made a big thing about how the MQB platform would make it easier to incorporate stuff like that into production.
When you look at the black roof on the CS I think it's a nod to the car the engineers wanted to make but the accountants wouldn't allow.
-
I'm pretty sure the bucket seats are the same as the ones I saw on the R400 - so not completely exclusive (if indeed it gets made).
I think the wheels on the press release version look awesome - similar to the Santiagos, which IMO are still the best alloy on any Mk 7. Looks wrong with the Prets, but then I think they're horrid alloys anyway so I'm biased, not special enough.
The red however....
-
Yeah the seats are a variant on the optional Recaro's that have been around Audi/VW for years now
-
I am very interesting in this and the Golf R400, in need of a 5 door model to replace my 3 door GTI PP.
It looks to be a good middle-ground model between the GTI PP and Golf R.
Hopefully the Golf R400 will also be unveiled at Frankfurt to help me decide.
-
Put that front end on the R and it really would look like an R should look like from back to front ..
-

Agreed, with the GTI Clubsport looking as good as it does, is there actually room for a Golf R400, what can they do to the R400 body styling to top the Clubsport.
I am beginning to wonder if it has been delayed or cancelled completed with Volkswagen settling on the Clubsport for 2016. :(

Im sure lots of places will be peddling that bit of kit aftermarketly soon, ive even found one for a mk6 if you can believe it lol

I had mentioned, some time ago to the sales man from whom I bought my GTD that I was interested in the Clubsport and if released I would purchase one or alternatively an R.
He emailed me today, said he could secure me a build spot f I paid a small deposit (£250.00 - refundable of course) subject to release details and price.
-
Time line :-
Tuesday - saw a couple of nearly new Rs that we might have been interested in.
Wednesday - rang the dealers, both of whom said there was no discount on them and the PCP % was over 11%. I said I may as well just buy a new one to which they both agreed. (just out of curiosity, how then will they ever sell those two nearly new Rs?). Anyway, the second dealer says he's got a GTi PP in the compound so why didn't I go and have a look at that. I said I wanted to wait and see the Edition 40 if I was going to go down the GTi route. Dealer says that isn't due for at least another year and that the R400 would see the light first so I agreed that if it was going to be that long we'd go have a look at his GTi.
Thursday - pictures all over Autocar/Auto Bild etc. of Clubsport due "early 2016". Not exactly "at least a year away" methinks so I rings him up to cancel my Sunday appointment cos I want to see the Clubsport in the flesh first. He's not in so I leave a message for the receptionist to ell him.
Friday - I rang again out of politeness to make sure he got the message that I wouldn't be in on Sunday. Receptionist says he'd ring back as soon as he got off the phone. Still waiting ....
Moral 1 - dealers basically haven't got a clue what's going on and I may as well stick to reading Autocar/Auto Bild for info. as they seem t know more.
Moral 2 - stick to the dealer you know (in my case, Donny who've always been good) as the others are clueless/useless/ignorant etc. etc.
-
This looks simply phenomenal. I can see this one being a future classic straight off.
-
E-mailed my usual dealer today to keep me informed of allocation etc.
They asked me about R400, so from what I have read elsewhere, I think all dealers have been told / asked / asked to get potential numbers etc on this model.
Maybe gauging if their is a market for this model.
Lets be realistic, its going to be £35-38k when fully specced at least.
Out of my range for a 3 door (which I'd want) hatchback golf.

i'll take plenty of pics of this next week at Frankfurt, got a bit of a dilemma as i friend has offered me his Cayman GT4 slot

not sure I get the dilemma, 27k GTi CS or 75K GT4 with a few essential options?
-
This looks amazing, but I doubt there's going to be much haggling due to demand
-
It's something I considered before ordering my gti but I preferred the understated look of the gti and as nice as those seats are they aren't practical for me on a daily basis. I also managed a good discount, that won't be available on the club sport.
They will be a stunning car though.
-
Really liking the look of this, VW you have my attention......
-
Looking at prices, surely the Golf CS is going to be not far off R money anyway.
Looking at the SEAT site, the Cupra R 280 is a shade under £28k and the Golf CS has better equipment levels as well as not being the 'semi budget' VAG brand. As well as the Golf being allegedly a limited edition too.
That said, apart from the wheels I'd have one in a heartbeat.

There's no decision to make, if you can afford it then go for the Cayman GT4 - stunning car and in a different league to anything Volkswagen can offer.

exactly my point, a hatch back or arguably the best car this side of the GT3 and GT3RS. But even if it wasn't that great a car they would hardly meet in many of the same categories.

Agreed, depends on what wigit wants from a car - me, if I could afford it, I'd take the Porsche every day of the week!

I actually prefer this to the R in many ways.
A decent set of lightweight 18s and this will look spot on
This.

Good find.
It looks a lot better in the flesh than in early press pics. as is normally the case.
The interior details are generally quite subtle in typical VW fashion. Good effort VW!
It'll be interesting to see the price.

"Head round the back to give you a look at that as well"... "Not too different"... except maybe that huge spoiler and rear splitter.

As Exonian says, it does definitely look better in the flesh, than on press pics. The question is whether the Golf R400 will see the light of day anytime soon, or will the Clubsport be the car to go for next year?
I thought it would be interesting to put forward the following questions to see how others felt:
1. Which car would you choose out of a Golf R or GTI Clubsport and why?
2. If you went for the GTI Clubsport would you get DSG or Manual and why?
I am toying with the idea of an Golf R at present, but the Clubsport does look tempting on the video link on this thread. I am also toying with the idea of DSG as I have always had manual and fancied a change, but would like to know your thoughts on the matter before I delve in on my next car order.
-
Really liking that one in the video, surely those seats will be a option in the UK. I'm thinking of getting a R myself tho, i just keep arguing with myself if i should buy or lease.
-
Same as you Brenbo. I am thinking exactly the same.
I was thinking GTI clubsport but the R is a great car. Things that put me off the clubsport is the black roof if standard looks great on white but not sure on other colours.
I also fancy a change from manual which would be great, but the manual is a great box to use so it is very difficult to decide.
Price aswell would be an option as the R is discountable but will the clubsport end up being more with no discount offers.
I still want to see a clubsport in silver though😀
-
I will be taking a keen interest into this purely because I'm a VW nut! Like everyone else on this site I love the Gti nd the R however for me a golf R has no history to it apart from being a faster less attractive version of the standard gti. A golf gti is a cult classic guys! That is its selling point :) the ORIGINAL hot hatch :D

I would go for the CS. Not only does it look great (especially the wheels) but also reasonably subtle and would fit nicely in my current mid-life crisis  It would have to be a red three door but not sure about the gearbox. To me, and no disrespect meant to R owners, the R is a bit serious. I can understand why people like them, Lapiz blue looks amazing, but to me the GTI is not only an icon but more importantly, it's fun.
-
Yes, the GTI is the original hot hatch and much loved on this forum by all (or nearly all at least), however it doesn't avoid the fact that it was, for a good while, just a trim level with other more powerful Golfs in the range (mk4).
The R does have heritage going back to the 1989 Rallye Golf and tenuous links with the V6 Golfs up to and including the R32 models. What it doesn't have (yet) is an image of its own. The R400 will muddy the waters further.
So now we have the normal GTI, the pretty and characterful base GTI.
The PP GTI that drives a bit better in extremis and has better brakes.
The R which (rear end aside) looks like a base model to most people that don't see the design details that are a bit too subtle. Dull to look at and doesn't feel as manic as you'd expect a 300 Bhp Golf to be BUT is an amazingly accomplished drivers car. It's just so efficient you need to take a reality check at times.
Now we have a Clubsport coming. Looks wise it's a bit more Marmite than the normal GTI and performance wise it'll be like a Cupra - as fast as an R in the dry and a bit sharper but still subtle and polished. Most importantly - it looks a bit special.
The R400? That's still an enigma.
To get 400 PS out of a 2.0 four it's going to need some tricks. Electronics will play a big part but will it be user friendly on the roads? Great on a drag strip, no question but how much inertia will be needed to spin the turbo up to max torque?
What autobox will take the (assumed) 300 lb ft plus? My guess is you'd want an auto for a road car as it would be hard work with a manual unless they can coax decent torque and turbo response out of the engine at lower revs. At higher revs it's just going to be ballistic and licence losing.
Looks wise it will be a winner but it's going to be pricey too. And I'd expect VW to make it in smallish numbers so as not to dilute the rest of the sporty range too much. It's a halo model and two fingers up to their competitors. Possibly a good long term investment depending on how many they make and where the uber hatch market heads next.
Unless you do track days though, where can you use the R400 performance? More of a status symbol than a useable hot hatch.
My money would go on the Clubsport.
(Except that it won't!)
A pretty amazing choice of models to choose from really if you've got the ££££
-
Is it just me or is it that VW have made rather too many performance Golfs out of the Mk7?
Or alternatively, have they captured the market of the 50k car spenders looking to downsize whilst still having willy waving opportunities at the office/golf club?
By trickling out more and more its a good way of fuelling one-upmanship - with effectively very little cost to VW in making these "new" models.
I mean, look on here, some had a GTD, bought a GTI-PP, sold GTI bought an R, thinking of selling R for a Cup... looking for when an R400 is released...

I think it would be a little hard on the GTi brand to blame a mid life crisis on the mk4. Some companies have one or a few howlers in the life cycle of cars.
Also I think as a more casual VW owner (with only a Mk1 and mk2 in my history), I see no connection with the R or R32 to other cars VW have done in the past. if there is anything identifiable, I wasn't aware of any Rallye connection. If they wanted to identify it to an older model, then calling it Rallye would have helped.
-
I have hankered long and hard over the GT4 for a while, no need to go mad on options, for me its a car where less is more, a few choice goodies and nav, few issues are the wife and the speed humps in my road and its a lot of wonga but probably will depreciate less than a GTI/R and would probably replace my R and i'd just rent something instead of the Polo like a CS or R
Love the CS and i get why people would have it over the R, other R owners don't on the whole

No it's not just you.
Maybe I'm just getting old and too cynical but I think I can see what VW are doing.
They're just responding to the market as ever, and if there are a load of prestige manufacturers making uber hatches for social climbers that are pretending to have a social conscience as it's fashionable to, then VW have to follow that market (whilst pretending to lead it) in order to shift metal and keep up the image they want to portray in an apple-esque fashion.
All clever marketing and it gives enthusiasts a bit of choice so long as their pockets are deep.

The mk3 was a turd as well.
No, you can't blame VW for the mk4 and at least they woke up when they realised SEAT were stealing all their sales and brought out the R32 then the mk5 GTI to redeem themselves.
I was going on more marketing direction showing that 4wd Golfs with more power than a GTI or even V6 engined Golfs aren't anything new, and the GTI isn't exactly something that has been hallowed in VW's mentality like they'd have you believed.
I can remember when VW were considering pulling the plug on the GTI altogether when hot hatches went out of fashion.
The GTI is always the one marketed on it's 'character' and whatever sits above it in the range seems to have a bit of an identity crisis. VW make these models because they can, and the fact they sell in any numbers dictates whether they will continue to make them or steer in a different direction. As I said up there somewhere - the R is a great car but it has no identity.
I'm forever being asked whether mine is a Diesel Golf and where it sits in the range. If people's eyes don't immediately glaze over I might tell them it's a 4wd 300BHP hatch and that just doesn't really compute with most people. With my GTI's it was always a case of "Ohh, I love your GTI, those are nice wheels too. I used to have a GTI once and loved it..."
As long as we buy GTI's in decent numbers then VW will happily make them.
-

Probably because they're tied into a business lease or feel they're far too important to have something as lowly as a GTI badge when BMW, Ford, Honda, Audi, Mercedes et al are bringing out uber hatches and they feel a bit under pressure in the works car park to have something as lowly as "not top of the range"
For others it's a traction issue, particularly if you're going to modify the car.
And for others still, the staid looks of the R are more suited to their professional image than a slightly boy racer Clubsport.
I'm sure there are as many reasons as there are owners.
As for the the GT4 - you only live once Mr W.

Funny, ever since I got the R a few weeks ago I've had so many people ask me about it and I notice a lot of rubber-neckers trying to get a 2nd glance. I think it's the colour though. The Lapiz blue is very striking looking, tends to stick out in a sea of greys. My GTI was white and really didn't attract any attention.
-
My R gets loads of attention compared to my NB GTI.
-
i actually prefer the wife's night blue R given its such a sleeper, the lapiz is a bit to look at me
life is to short Mr Ex but I don't want it to be curtailed by Mrs W before the GT4 would arrive
i'll take plenty of CS pics
-
I like the ClubSport (and I get the appeal over the R to some). I love GTI's and I like R's. I may indeed love R's soon - I will let you know in dure course.
The GTI is a cult classic and ever will be. There's a lot of talk about the R having no identity, or history/heritage behind it, but this does not happen overnight, or more accurately, over a handful of short years. And though times are different, remember this was once true of the GTI. It has earned it's cult status and I hope the R does too, in time, though granted VW's marketing strategy of flooding the market with über hatches makes this more of a challenge.
As for people 'recognising' an R, I really couldn't care less if they do or don't. It's nice to be complimented on your car, but I buy cars for me, not for a few pleasing comments and admiring glances in the street.
Anyway, congrats on the GT4 wigit (if you take up the build slot), nice to see someone 'going for it'. Life is short, and you never know what's coming next, so enjoy the fruits of your labour. Look forward to seeing your CS pics.
-
Well I've seen it, they are not letting the public in it at the show so taking interior shots was a challenge
Looked ok ride height may be a smudge lower than a stock GTI
Those doing the rear spoiler mod with need the glass black fins aas well
I'll get some pics over next few days, they had a met red PP GTI a which just looked superb
New Tiguan is also looking good
Best Golf there was a kamai liveried mk1 race car
Thought the RS Focus may have pushed buttons but could not live with the looks, it's als quite slab sided
Show highlight were the Abarth girls again
-
Any pictures of the standard 18" wheels yet? The 19s shown on the show cars aren't exciting me, but I'm open to a change on the standard 18" wheels I have (particularly as Mrs Pixelmix has kerbed one!)
-
Ford have recently announced the new Focus RS.
350bhp / 370nm, 0-62mph in 4.7secs, top speed 165mph with AWD + Torque Vectoring all for less than £28k.
Interesting times.....
-
Ford were always going to better the power of the Golf, it's what Ford and Vauxhall always do. I think they've missed a trick by not opting for the 5 cylinder though but emissions compliance will have scrapped that idea.
The R is what the GTI should be...the most performance orientated model available in the range.
-
No real news about the Golf R400 was mentioned at the Frankfurt motor show recently, maybe a 2015 Geneva launch for the R400?

I don't wish to be the bearer of some bad news but Porsche don't have any more GT4's for sale...They made no trepidation of saying if you didn't have one on pre order it is too late?
I dont think you'll be able to just wander into a dealer and get one BTO now.
However i may be mistaken

Confused by your comment - the mk 7 is a very nice looking car. And certainly isn't chavved up like the new RS.

I'm only joking, but although subjective the Golf isn't really a stunner in many people eyes, I guess one good thing about the RS is that hasn't gone down the 4 exhaust route which is to be commended.

I think the Mk7 is a very good looking car. I often admire the other variants I see driving around.
I like the 2 exhausts, but I'm afraid I'm in the 4 exhausts are better camp, so I disagree  so much so that I was looking at a 435d the other day and was put off by the fact it only had twin exhausts to one side - didn't look right.

Dubai Autoshow brochure.
The other rims, presumably are the forged 18's, but they look more like 19's in the those pictures? A little like the R Prets.
Dave
-
Trying to decipher or translate the brochure, does that mean it is 265bhp & DSG ONLY?
That'a shame if you can't have a manual!
-
Also it says XDS for the Front Diff Lock.... I thought it was going to have the Performance Pack's VAQ Diff?
Looking like 3 door only? If so I am out.
-
The wheels in the first pic - the ones that look a bit like prets - are far nicer.

Good find.
The pics of the forged wheels remind me of the early press pics of the Austin wheels on the GTI that VW sometimes still use in their advertising. A fair bit of artistic licence goes into those pics and the Austins also looked like 19's and looked at least 9" wide with massively lowered suspension! Typical brochure shots.
They'll look much smaller in the flesh, maybe there will be a few different wheel options? They certainly look a handsome design from those shots. They remind me of Audi RS wheels.
-

In the second picture (the brochure with the Arabic writing) there are clearly three pedals. So surely it'll be offered in manual too.
-
3 door. Would love one sadly family dictates so I'm out.
-
3 door suits me fine, not bothered either way with the gearbox. Wheels look great. I'd definitely like one! Probably not in white though. Red would be great. Pretty sure my pocket won't stretch to one though and my OH would kill me, and not in a nice way, if I started going on about cars again so soon after my latest purchase! It took her 12 years to get over the last one
-
Manual & DSG Options will be available in the UK.
-
Yep, confirmed by VW UK press release, 4 and 5 door and DSG and Manual.
2x Wheel styles, the 18" forged (Like Prets) and the other 19's above.
Supposidly standard in Oryx, but doubt this will happen.
Think it will be PP Diff, not XDS.
Buckets supposed to be standard, and all press releases mention this.
Does anyone know how the buckets for a 3 door work? Do they have the same easy acess lever the normal 3 door has for the rear seats?
Dave
-
Got me interested again
-
Got me interested again
Me too but the pricing will be very close to the Golf R  ...... I feel Volkswagen need to revise the Golf R as it now seems the R400 may never happen.
Perhaps give a better spec along with a price increase:-
Bucket seats with full leather interior
Sat Navigation
Keyless
Winter Pack
Increase in performance to 380bhp / 450nm
Upgraded brake system
:)
-

They tilt forward - same Recaro option seats that have been on various VW and Audi's in recent years.
I can't see 5dr on any UK press release though.

If the Clubsport will be 5 Door as well, then I may also be interested. The interior of the Clubsport looks great with the Bucket Seats and Alcantara. But the performance increase of the R for little extra money is still almost swaying my decision. When do the order books officially open for the Clubsport?
Heres a question for you: If you were to drive mainly B Roads and single carriageway A Roads as I do living in Cornwall, would you go for DSG or Manual?

If the Clubsport will be 5 Door as well, then I may also be interested. The interior of the Clubsport looks great with the Bucket Seats and Alcantara. But the performance increase of the R for little extra money is still almost swaying my decision. When do the order books officially open for the Clubsport?

You have a press release and have forgotten to put up the photos again?!!!
You again  There hasn't been another UK one since September. Almost like they have been busy on something else
If you want a 12 minute old bit of press news (make sure you are sitting down):
VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER NAMED INTERNATIONAL VAN OF THE YEAR 2016
Hannover, 18 November 2015 – An International jury of 24 commercial vehicle journalists have named the sixth-generation Volkswagen Transporter as International Van of the Year 2016. This is the third time that the Volkswagen Transporter has won this coveted prize.
The award was given by the chairman of the jury, Jarlath Sweeney to the CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Dr. Eckhard Scholz, who said, “The prestigious award of International Van of the Year 2016 for our T-series is a powerful symbol for the performance of our team in Hannover. We see the award as a signal for a successful start to 2016.”

I got a dealer update sent last week, which I assume was from an internal news system of VW UK's?
Pretty much same as the news release on the UK website, but states 3 and 5 door and order books open in January.

I have Manual now and always have. Never had DSG or any other auto box before, but recently tempted to try it. But on other hand am intrigued if it is going to be worth the extra cash if I am driving around single carriageway A and B roads in the depths of Cornwall and Devon. So thought I would ask you guys from personal experience whether I should take the punt or not?
On another note I had a call from VW Exeter just a couple minutes ago asking if I had received the email for £1000 off for loyal customers to VW. The gist of it was I had to register a car by March the guy said and order the car before Jan 31st. Sales must be a bit slack this time of year. I told him I was holding out for the Clubsport or if not sold with 5 Doors, a Golf R instead. So may not take him up on his offer just yet.
-
In regards needing DSG if you live in Devon and Cornwall and mainly do A and B road driving I would say no. I've just got my first ever UK auto (lived in US and had autos there), it's a Mk7 Golf GTi DSG PP. Plus points for me are pootling on the morning commute, just keeping it in D and managing stop-start traffic with ease and not needing to worry about my left leg. Downside for me is you know the machine is in charge.

Is this Clubsport a replacement for the Edition 40?
-
Is this Clubsport a replacement for the Edition 40?
It is indeed. It has little 40th Anniversary graphics as well as Clubsport logos.
I think VW have done a good job of making the 40th Edition a bit special and different.
@Brenbo:
I really think you'd need a test drive lasting several days to familiarise yourself with DSG and whether it suits your driving style or the roads you use it on.
I've spent a few periods of time with DSG and BMW autoboxes and prefer manual boxes for more rural driving as I just find I can set the car up for a quick bend a bit more smoothly. I also like the turbo spool feeling as the torque ramps up at peak boost which is masked with a DSG. City driving lends itself better to the DSG and cross country it doesn't matter either way as these cars have so much torque over such a Rev range you rarely have to change gear!
DSG just requires a bit of adaption and you'll find it either suits your driving or it won't.
If you're really happy with a manual then maybe you can say "why change?" But if you fancy a DSG you can say "why not?"
Most people on here who try it say they'd never go back.
It's just a bit artificial for me. It's the car equivalent of autocorrect.

Thanks for clarifying Exonian. I thought it might be but you never quite know with VW. Their ability to shoehorn another variant into the golf range makes me chuckle  Next up, the Golf 50SG (50 shades of grey edition aimed at frisky, 40 something, housewives). In exclusive grey obvs. Now there's a niche.
Sarcasm aside the Clubsport looks sweet. Let's see final spec and if it comes in 5 doors. What of the "boost" button they mentioned?
-
Boost is like a "push to pass" style mode when you put your foot down.
You get 10secs worth every 30secs if that makes sense.
-
Yep, confirmed by VW UK press release, 4 and 5 door and DSG and Manual.
Any update on the 5 door? If it has 5 doors that will just be bizarre,
Sorry to be a kill joy, but a couple of unfortunate issues with internet forum speculation on this car. It isn't lighter (even though its called a club sport) it was never going to come with a roll cage despite people foaming at the mouth at the possibility, it won't have that flush stance that the press photos show, and it won't be in 5 door.
I would actually love to be wrong on all counts except the 5 door...

Was under the impression that MK8 was 2018/19

It looks like a great car. But why would you buy one of these when you can have a R for less (given the current reduction in prices)?
-
It looks like a great car. But why would you buy one of these when you can have a R for less (given the current reduction in prices)?
Be choosing the replacement for the GTD in March and as much as the Clubsport appeals the more assess it against the R the further move away from it and am back full circle to the R
The tempters over the R are the fact its a limited edition of the iconic GTI and with more pronounced styling because of.
Performance is obviously improved too from them reviews
So its a lot closer but not enough to sway me over the R when weight everything including cost up.
-

The Clubsport has actually tempted me away from the R.
I prefer the looks and its something a little more unique, especially with the limited production run.
-
Fair enough. Was interested to here people's thoughts on why they'd pick the CS over the R when they're the same money. Certainly looking forward to seeing it in the flesh, does look a very nice motor indeed!
Do we know how long the 'boost' button takes to charge? Ie. how long after using it can you use it again?

Says in the evo article that 19" wheels are optional and come with Michelin Pilot Cup 2 sticky rubber (worth buying the car for these alone!) and this setup was the only choice for the press drive at Portimao Circuit.

10 secs of over boost every 30secs.
-
Worst fears confirmed, they are making it limited (means little to no discount) and the price is crazy compared to an R and the other offerings in the market, and I also don't like the 18's that are standard, meaning the 19's with Pilot Sports will be an expensive option.
Might start the hunt for an R now.
(http://images.cdn.autocar.co.uk/sites/autocar.co.uk/files/styles/flexslider_thumbnail/public/images/car-reviews/first-drives/legacy/img_1888.jpg?itok=tCVeqp2Z)
-
I hazard a guess I could go 8 secs quicker around the Ring with Cup 2 tyres and no HP increase.
It looks like I was wrong about 5 door, they may actually put a limited performance addition in a 5 door hatch set up..
-
There are mentions of the overboost being initiated by "kick down" so being as the test car was a manual then I'm still guessing it's initiated by the switch in the throttle pedal we all have to suffer already whether a DSG owner or not - full throttle depression equals overboost for 10 seconds.
As for the wheels - like with the ED30 for the Euro markets, they might get different options to the UK. Same as the current R gets several wheel options in different markets.
The ClubSport was pictured in pre-production guise wearing Pretorias so it's quite likely the Prets *could* be offered in the UK with the Michelin tyres as an expensive option. This indeed might make sense in the UK where it rains nearly all the time but rarely freezes for more than a few days of the year meaning we don't *have* to fit winter tyres. The Michelins I'd put in the 'dry use only' category really meaning in countries where they get proper seasons and do have to fit winter tyres by law it makes more sense to have a dry weather summer tyre and a crap weather winter tyre set up. We in the UK have our own dilemmas as far as tyres are concerned so probably just get a 'make do' option as standard and leave it to a purchaser as to where they want to go from there.
So the lightweight 18's kind of fit in with the ClubSport ethos as an all weather all use wheel and the upgraded wheel and tyre package fits in fully with the ClubSport being used for club sport (track use). The fancy 19" things on the show car might be a £1k option.
-
I like that steering wheel.

Any idea what effect the limited edition has on depreciation over three years ? Does anyone know if the it was possible to obtain discount on the previous limited edition models ?
-

The Anniversary editions have always enjoyed strong residuals, I did very well in part ex with my ed30 and have recently been offered £16.5k for the ed35 (against a CAP value of £15.3k) which for a 3 1/2 year old car is pretty good imo
On both the ed30 and 35 I managed a decent discount when buying but did buy both used (6 months old) so couldn't comment on new discounts really
-
Found this write up on the spec of the clubsport just a couple minutes ago.
http://www.sytner.co.uk/volkswagen/news/vw-reveals-new-golf-gti-clubsport/
-
I think Volkswagen have made the model line-up t0o closely matched in terms of price and performance.
I'd say offer a decent standard spec on the GTI Clubsport, reduce the price of the Standard GTI / GTI PP and then increase the spec and price of the Golf R. :)
-
Evo "developes downforce over 60 mph" AC "claimed to provide it with true downforce at 75mph"
Can you get "true" downforce at a speed as low as 70mph? or is it a small reduction in lift at the rear axle? Surely you would need a larger wing with a even larger angle of attack? Also it would probably need a flat underside and a true diffuser with a ride height reduction so it actually can do some work. A small cosmetic diffuser bolted onto a turbulent underside isn't going to do much. I guess this must just be journos trotting out any PR that's presented in front of them, and to be fair VW are prone to a bit of BS.

Can you remember what they cost new ?
-
I think I paid around £24k for my Edition 30 in early 2007, one of the early cars - white, xenons, cruise and parking sensors
-
Of all the anniversary specials the Ed30 remains the one I liked the most. I was holding out for an Ed40 to be something I would want to buy brand new and cherish but when I saw the pictures it didn't do anything for me. Going down the Clubsport route is turning a Golf into something like a Megane Cup - not my cup of tea I'm afraid.
If as folk say it's going to be priced around what an R is then I'm not sure what niche this is going to fill. I guess being a limited edition will appeal - I once owned a Corrado VW Storm so there was always some good banter with regular VR6 owners
-
Looks smart in grey
My current GTi is grey and I adore it. Would like to upgrade in March but can't decide between the CS and the R. Not sure any really stand out looks wise but the under the bonnet it does. Hopefully the CS will bring R prices down. Tough decisions.
-
The nicest part of this car by far is the interior. Externally, it doesn't do anything for me at all.
My thoughts exactly.
But I'm also glad VW did something like this as they're normally so very conservative.
They've got all the parts bin mechanicals and experience from the Sub8 so it's good to see VW's take on making a bit more of a hardcore track focussed Golf. It's no Megane or Type R but it's probably a bit more liveable day to day.
I also like how they didn't want to fall into the limited numbers debacle like with the Edition 30 by saying it's a limited numbers production run. Basically it's up to how many people buy them in a shortish space of time how many they'll churn out. On the back of slow VW sales in general it might make these cars very rare in years to come.
-
I'm hoping those buckets seats are introduced to the R then it becomes a much more attractive proposition
-
I too hope the bucket seats are made available for the R as I am still deciding whether to go the CS or R route next year. I just got a lot more keen for a CS recently as it will be available as 5 doors but I have this niggle if the R would be a better proposition. Guess will have to see what is standard spec when CS available to order and price things up then. I read last night on Piston Heads VW are undecided whether the Buckets would be standard on CS as cost a lot? I suspect this is usual press rumor mill again but lets hope they are standard?

What's all this over boost bollox about, is it some sort of marketing gimmick or is it to protect the difference between the 'Edition 40' and R in power terms?
I wonder if it can be mapped to deliver the full power without the 10 second limitation...

Carsten Schebsdat on GTI Clubsport
How fast do you have to be going for the downforce to make a difference?
"I think when you drive the Clubsport versus the normal one you will feel the difference above 70mph. The quicker you are the more difference you feel!"
Can you tell us how much downforce there is?
"I know those figures but to be honest we have made lots of comparison tests in different wind tunnels and the wind tunnel at Wolfsburg works differently from other ones, so you get different figures."
Is he taking the piss?

Very interesting and looks like the Club sport is a lot closer performance wise than first thought. Although 4 wheel drive in the wet will obviously have advantages.
It has to be a GTI for me but a GTI with close to R performance is very tempting, have already e mailed my dealer
-
I have also contacted a dealer, regarding a possible waiting list for the GTI Clubsport. The salesman said they do not have one yet but he would get any details he could from his manager and get back to me soon..... This was beginning of this week so not very prompt. The usual scenario of salesmen selling a product they know nothing about even when information regarding their product is updated. I found myself telling him about it, which happened last time I bought my GTI PP. It's strange they should know there is this thing called the internet which provides the latest info before they receive it through the right channels i.e. via VW UK. You would think information was the greatest tool and advantage to a dealer, but it seems the have not discovered this yet.
Apologies for my rant, it just baffles me?
Anyway back to the subject of this thread, I am leaning more toward the Clubsport at present but it does depend if things like the seats are standard and the price of the car after I have configured it is not going to cost more than a similar spec Golf R?
-

I see you are in Cornwall so if like me you have made the mistake of going to our local dealer I share your frustration. I spoke to the sales guy last week while I was waiting for my car . He was nice enough but did tell me he had just come back from his VW training and proudly produced his framed certificate. He then told me he was selling sofas last week. Yes he is learning but he knew very little about the cars and was quoting the wrong figures . I made an enquiry about the value of my car against a new GTI. He said he could not give me a price as it was not a serious enquiry !!
I then e mailed Plymouth and quoted a very competitive price from my supplying dealer (JCB Medway) for a GTI PP for March delivery , and asked if they could match it . They would not believe the price and asked for written proof. When I supplied it they have not responded.
Anyway JCB have been first class the guy is on leave but still responds to my emails.
If you are interested in the club sport perhaps we can join forces and see what we can do.

I went to VW Exeter. The guy I was hoping to eal with was on holiday so had to deal with someone else who was nice enough, but not too interested unless I was buying one of the cars on their forecourt. This is after I explained I was serious and wanted to originally buy a Golf R with as much extras as possible. He yet again was no too forth coming but felt obliged to email me a personal video presentation of their existing Golf Rs on the forecourt.
The thing with me knowing more from the internet than the salesman I deal with when buying a car happens a lot. It even happened when i bought Civic Type R's in the past at Honda Plymouth. I guess it's a common occurence. If you are selling a product how you be so clueless about?
@ Caprigreen: It may be a benefit if we do join forces and swap quote values for car specs to get an idea if we are getting a good deal locally. I will be looking in to checking out Exeter, Plymouth etc, and even maybe further afield / online to see if I can get a deal to haggle with like CarWOW and Drive the Deal. Will keep in touch. Let the games commence.

Slightly off topic but it amazes me how you don't get more car salesmen who are actually car enthusiasts. If they actually employed staff who are both knowledgeable about cars and are big petrolheads no matter what the brand, surely they would sell a hell of a lot more cars.
The number of times I've went into a dealership and was able to tell the dealer more about their own cars and future developments is ridiculous. I suppose in one sense it gives us an advantage over the dealer cause they know they're not dealing with someone who doesn't have a clue.
-
I completely agree with you CraigW. It is insane they are not enthusiasts about the one thing they are trying to sell, as I feel they would sell more as well. It would be like me being a Graphic Designer without knowing how to draw or use the software it would be ridiculous.... Oh wait a minute there are people I know off, who are Graphic Designers and cannot use the software or draw, so I take that back.
However thinking about it I do know of one salesman at VW Exeter who is an enthusiast about cars, but I was unable to deal with him on this occasion as he was on hols.
Anyway changing subject and back on topic I really do hope things like the Bucket seats are standard.

Trouble is, they have to know about 7 or 8 different models and 6 to 10 trims and special editions for each model. Unless they've got a huge interest in that one specific variant you're interested in, chances are you will always know more about it than they do.

Sorry to stay off topic but this is exactly why I won't go into dealers anymore. Full stop. Period! I would rather do all my research, negotiation and discount stuff online. Only on collection of a vehicle will I step foot into the dealer to pay them and drive the car away. I vowed to do this after a particularly unpleasant experience in a VW dealership some years ago.
-
As Monkeyhanger says - too many trim levels. Just read a report from a VW (DE) committee member saying one way to reduce VW costs to pay for their naughtiness without laying people off is to have fewer trim levels of a particular model.

Yes sounds like a plan happy to share what I know
Sounds like a done deal then. Will keep in touch when the time comes for order books to open.
-
For most salesmen it's just a job. They're selling a product and you'll be lucky if they've read the catalogue. They seem to move around a lot too. My local VW dealers goes through salesmen at a fair rate.
Do you think the lads working in Currys are washing machine enthusiasts?

exactly, the top of the range models are a bit more exciting, but to them its a car with a wheel at each corner, and if you are a car enthusiast selling a 1.0 up or a 1.4 TSI is not my idea of fun.
-
I think its no excuse if you are a car enthusiast or not, i could learn the trim levels spec pretty much across the models in a few hours easy, yeah id make the odd mistake but if i was unsure how easy is it check the broacher. Its just so unprofessional, i wouldn't pay them in buttons, their are good ones but few and far between. I had one once telling me the GTI in the showroom was diesel, i said it was petrol, he insisted it was diesel, i just agreed with him in the end just to shut him up
Knowing everything in Currys is a bit different, thousands of items on sale.
-
Anyone like to speculate on the likely colours. Did previous special editions come in any non standard colours?
-
I know Oryx White will be one of the colours as they state it as the colour used in the photos and as part of the spec for the car. Although with it's premium price tag I suspect it will not be standard.
Does anyone know what tyres are on the Golf R in the demo videos of the Clubsport GTI and Golf R on the Portimao circuit? I suspect the gap between the two cars in the video may be close due to the Golf R being on a lesser tyre than the GTI Clubsport? If this is the case then it may be a just as cost effective option to buy a Golf R with Michelin Sport pilot Cup 2 tyres on from the outset. Especially if things like the bucket seats on the GTI Clubsport may not be standard spec, worst case scenario?
-
Video description says both cars on the same tyres - Sport Cup 2's
-
If this is the case then the GTI Clubsport is definitely looking like a close match to Golf R even though FWD. Has anyone got their current GTI on Michelin Sport pilot Cup 2 tyres at present. Do you get tramping or have to smoothly ease in acceleration from stand still to avoid tramping like with the Bridgestones? Or is it like night and day compared to Bridgestones and are you able to put all the power you would expect down from stand still with confidence even in wet conditions?
What I am trying to say is the GTI closer to the traction of a Golf R if you have a tyre like Michelin Sport Pilot Cup 2 tyres on?
The reason i ask is I have Bridgestones on my GTI PP and in the wet I have to ease the power in a bit more from stand still as the tyres I have do not provide a great amount of traction as many others have already said on this forum.
-
Although in Spanish, (My audio is turned off at present) here is another video on You Tube showing more of the seats from front on in the GTI Clubsport. The car does look good in this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSpJaL2kyEs
-
4WD will help the R @corner exit for a very short time otherwise its lugging round the extra weight, with accompanied transmission wind-up and power sucking.
On the dealer front, I found Inchcape in Chester really helpful when I booked a build-slot back in September. Can't recommend them enough.
-
Bit of a longer video showing all the 3x cars from the day.
Got to say the CSG looks great colour on this.

Great video, the rev counter looks like it red lines at 7000+rpm, am I right in thinking the current GTI MK7 red lines at around 6000rpm? If this is the case then the Clubsport is not far off a Honda VTEC with it's high revs. When I used to own Type-R's I used to have to get to 6500rpm+ before I got all the power out of the car, but oh what a great noise it made in doing so.
-
Nice Video. Is the other silver/grey one driving around track inside the first minute Tungsten Silver?
-
Awesome in CSG - correct amount of doors too.
-
Love the look the Clubsport, i think if you are keeping it stock you have a viable R alternative, if you are looking at 360bhp with a map then i'd take the R
I hear all the comparisons and in reality i think each one has its day
I've run Pilot Sport Cup 2s on my R for five months, these for me are not all year round tyres as not great in the wet or colder temps, i have a spare set of wheels on running super sports now its wetter, in the dry they just transformed the R and its handling
I think not putting Pilot Sport Cup 2s on the lighter 18s is a mistake as is the prets

Hi all, new to this forum, have had golfs in the past but have always desired the GTI since being a youngster and seeing the 16v mark 2, just never had enough money! :( . My first was new 2005 mark 5 1.6 FSI. Nice car but was a bit boring, sold it in 2009 and upgraded to a mark 6 1.4 TSi (gt sport 160 BHP), I know a lot of you will scoff at such a slow car but I loved it and the interior.
Anyway onto the club sport, I had to sell my GT Sport a few years back to pay for a deposit on a house and have been saving ever since. Having seen the videos/promos for the new clubsport and doing the maths, I REALLY want this car. Just shy of an R but a better GTI and one which may hold value better and be rarer on the road.
Now my plan with this is to keep it as long as it lasts, im hoping for around 10 years minimum. Does anyone have any advice for me? I have heard about getting the PCP then getting a cheaper loan to pay it off (thereby getting the dealer contribution) Does this work?
Would you guys suggest a club sport as a beginner GTI? Also it will be a family car so will the sport seats get uncomfortable on long journeys? Really excited about getting it. Thanks all! :)
-
I think you should do it!
Not sure about the PCP thing but keeping it a long time is what I'd do.
Buy the car you really want and cherish it.
Never understood people who change all the time.
Put a bit more thought into it the first time then you won't constantly keep wanting to upgrade.

It revs higher because it has the bigger turbo'd R engine.
The Leon Cupra was initially released with a 265 Bhp option which is just a software change from the 280 version that has now been superseded by (wait for it.... ) a 290 PS Cupra!
The 280/290 Cupra was just a marketing thing, it has the 300 PS Golf R/S3 tune in reality, going from various reports on Cupranet that are often backed up by tuners figures. VW Group have done this in the past too, the 2005/6 Leon FR petrol was marketed with having about 185 Bhp but was really a 200 PS Golf GTI engine. Economies of scale, marketing heirachy and all that.
The CS GTI just has a switchable map in the ECU and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it's just a tiny bit of overboost and that it's less of a different map but rather the ECUjust backs off boost and fuelling after 10 or 15 seconds (or whatever it is) of flat out acceleration to keep intake temps lower and gives VW chance to market it as 'cleaner' than an R and superficially at least "not as powerful" on paper so as not to tread too much on its toes.

Modern society and slick marketing are the reasons there.
People looking for their nirvana being told what they want to hear by clever marketing people.
Technology moves at such a fast pace they can always trundle out something "all new and improved" every couple years.
No matter how much thought you put into a purchase you won't halt the tide of "progress".

I'd be pretty nervous about keeping a modern VW donkeys years beyond warranty - the main reason I change every 2 to 3 years.
Depreciation profiles for the performance Golf's are such that you can change at 3 years old and be coppers worse off than changing at 5 years.
-
I suppose the fact that I buy my cars outright rather than renting them sways my opinion.
-
Mine's bought outright, but I still wouldn't dare keep it past warranty and I'm aware of the rate it is depreciating by.
With that in mind, I'm putting enough away into savings every month to cover the depreciation - might as well be leasing and leaving my money in the bank. I may well do that next time. If I'm going to lose £ 9k in 3 years on my R or £15k in 5 years, I'd rather have a new car every 3 years - no MOTs to pay for, no haldex/gearbox fluid changes or brake pads/discs to pay for. It all adds up when you keep an older car and standard bhp/handling/refinement/tech are all progressing a long way in those 10 years you might keep yours.
-
Here is another Pistonheads article on the GTI Clubsport.
http://www.pistonheads.com/features/ph-features/golf-gti-laid-bare/33369
Is the 4 Motion diff in the Golf R similar in design to the E Diff in the GTI. Is the R an E-Diff (electronic/mechanical diff) or is it just a brake based electronic diff?

The R just has XDS (wheel braking) unlike the electro mechanical VAQ diff of the PP/CS/Cupra but then again the Haldex transmits power according to grip so there are certain similarities.

Then there's the chances of some pretty big unexpected bills if your aircon packs up or later down the line it's discovered the engine internals are made of chocolate like in the mk6 GTI/Scirocco or the thing turns into a rust bucket like a mk5...
There's no perfect way of buying a car, everyone's wages, outgoings, health, investment returns, debts, relationship issues, child commitments etc are all different.
The more I think about it the more leasing appeals to me too.

You make a strong argument.
My problem is the serious lack of mileage I do, about 3000 miles a year. If I sold it in 3 yrs time, it's still a 3 yr old car, low mileage or not, which makes it a great car to buy but a poor one to sell.
-
@ Kalimon: I am in a similar boat to you. My mileage is around 3K/4K+ a year. I have just hit about 7.5K after 2 years of owning my GTI PP. However life is for living and I will only regret not getting a car while I am able to afford and enjoy it. I know I will take a bit of a hit on the mileage and condition of my car when I part ex. But I will get a margin more back on the car than if it were to have high mileage. Besides the low mileage means you use less petrol, tyres etc, which means more money to spend on your next car
-
@Brenbo, behave yourself !!
You will have me in a 'R' in 3yrs time with talk like that
-
I am seriously contemplating a GTI Clubsport or Golf R next year. Getting the 3yr itch. Absolutely love my current car, but just can't shake that itch. I know it's a lot of money to lose every few years, but I don't drink, smoke etc,. My vice I am afraid is blowing money on new cars. Let me be devils advocate and tempt you to getting a new car. Come on Kalimon live a little

I am getting a new car, a new GTI PP in March.
I suppose an R or Clubsport make more sense to low mileage drivers like ourselves.
I'm really looking forward to getting my GTI. It will be my first petrol car for about 20yrs.
I spend the majority of my time in a proper vehicle, a Transit van!
-
Always owned this car outright too, have others in family (company car and a van) but this one my wife mainly drives and me at weekends etc, so low mileage and more for fun etc.
Looked at leasing, but can't see the sense for me on this car, even though its a lot of cash tied up in a car, but not sure leasing is better at all tbh.
Will 99% get a Clubsport now as was thinking of an R..... If they came with free leather and winter pack on the broker deals I have seen, would take one in a shot, even though there will be loads about in 3 years time come the next change.
Just want a deal on the Clubsport, I'm hoping some brokers may get options on them after the initial Jan - Mar orders have been taken... lets wait an see, always managed around 7-8% from dealer and good to fair PX price, as they know they can sell my car easy (low miles, dealer supplied, excellent condition etc) but we paid more or less list on an Edition 30, and I won't do that again.

I'm considering a R but i like the Clubsport also, i think they may hold their money better. I remember driving my mate's R and thinking i preferred my GTI PP as it felt like it was lighter than the figures say and was more fun at slower speeds, so i imagine these are even better. Im looking at R's mainly as its a different car to my GTI but the more i think about it im tempted to get a Clubsport or even another GTI PP as they are a steal at the moment. I need a 5 door, i presume it will be available on the Clubsport ?
-
I can conform the GTI Clubsport will be 5 door as well, there are pics online showing this from the recent Portimao circuit press drive.
-
The clubsport has me tempted but I want one of the very last ones off the production line. My GTI PP is only a year old and would like to run it as close to two years as I can .I understand there is a limited production time for the clubsport so will have to time it right.
Choosing the colour will be the hard part as usual
-
The colour will be the easy part for me, 'Oryx White'. It's an awesome colour when you get it in the right light. Choosing the car Clubsport or Golf R will be the harder part for me.
-

It's weird isn't it. Even though the R is a far more accomplished car than the regular GTI, whenever I see one I give it a second glance. They just seem so much more special (to me), and I always have this feeling that the driver of a GTI made the sensible decision. I imagine that will just be magnified when the CS is on the road.
If I wasn't picking my R up in a few weeks (15 days and counting!) then I dare say I'd buy a Clubsport.
-
I was going to ask the question of whom of you on this forum who own a Golf R would contemplate GTI Clubsport as their next car and why?
-
I've just been up close to a Lapiz Blue 3dr R while at work and because I know what it is, I love it but my brother, who is not a car guy, thought it looked very ordinary. He even said the wheels ( Prets ) looked awful.
I sort of know where he's coming from as the R is certainly a tad understated for what it actually is. Apart from the 4 exhausts obviously.
I'm a fan of the wolf in sheep's clothing look but I do think the GTI has a bit more about it.
I think this is what may sway buyers into the Clubsport. That and the fact that it will certainly be a rarer car than the R.
It's also a shame that you can't have the R in carbon grey or tungsten silver, two of the best colours.
It's all about personal choice thankfully.
PS
I have still to see a GTI in my neck of the woods. I'm sure there are must be plenty but I can't spot one.
-
The only GTI I see in my neck of the woods is my own. I have seen GTD's and the odd Golf R on rare occasions, but no GTI's. I suspect I may put off any desires of owning a Golf R until the MK8 is released and probably go for the GTI Clubsport this time, but we'll see for definite once the standard spec details of the Clubsport are released.

I feel the same. My initial intension was to keep my gti pp until the mk 8 arrived. This is why I bought a factory 5 year extended warranty . I figured that would allow me to wait for the discounts following the initial rush. The club sport has thrown a spanner in the works as I am tempted but not prepared to pay full list price . If there are discounts to be had I will consider buying .

Questions,
1. Thought you could not have 19's and a Sunroof, or is that just for the R?
2. All the pictures of the 3x test cars have no arm rests, assuming its not possible with these seats?
Dave
-
PS, I'm told order books open 2nd week of Jan in the UK.
Dave
-
Better pencil the date in to my diary then. The pics look great.
-
Have found a pic of the rear seats on the GTI clubsport. It appears the centre arm rest has been removed to allow for the Bucket Seats. However the rear seats and finish look fantastic, check out the pic (http://www.largus.fr/images/images/volkswagen-golf-gti-clubsport-francfort-2015-ll-02.jpg)
-
It also appears the air vents in the rear on back of arm rest have been removed?
-
Mmm I am kind of excited now about this car, just sort the price to a reasonable level please VW!
Dave
-
Vw should have put the alcantara/cloth seats in the standard GTI. They look a lot classier and more along the lines of the the A3 S Line seats that my wife's car has.
-
More to the point VW UK should have provided the Alcantara cloth seats as an option. They were available in other countries even Ireland I believe, but not the UK.
-
It's funny how we are all different I think alcantara is awful not so much the seats more the steering wheel looks cheap compared to the leather IMHA
-
They should be standard on a £28000ish car
-
Agreed. The seats in my wife's A3 are superb quality and very comfortable. Even my 2006 S Line were part leather.
-
The seats in my Civic Type-R's were always bucket seats with Alcantara and they were low £20K cars. Look forward to order books opening if bucket seats are standard as we suspect.
-
No armrest? I'm glad I didn't wait, I hate not having an armrest in a car.
-
No armrest? I'm glad I didn't wait, I hate not having an armrest in a car.
That reminds me of an episode of The Sweeney I was watching recently. Strange in a way as I didn't watch it when it was new, no idea why. Anyway, there was a scene at a used car lot and a car that was for sale had the usual selling feature sticker across the windscreen and unlike today where it might say 'active cruise control' or 'sat nav', this one just said 'heater'!
-
I am surprised that there hasn't been more scrutiny of the cars ability/dynamics/mpg/weight now its had some reviews. I know this is a VW forum but i was expecting a fair amount of debate about the car. It only seems the options list and when they can sign up is discussed. Nothing wrong with that, some on here are clearly VERY keen on VW cars but others I have seen more balance from on topics.
The car is interesting but also a contradiction imo. Karsten most likely wanted to help develop a car people would enjoy on the road and track but it appears lots of things got in the way. Some of the questions which are about on forums but not on here: Does it use the SEAT engine? Why not use the Golf R engine? Why not use the Brembo Sub 8 brakes from the SEAT too to help its clubsport credentials? why an overboost? Is this a gimmick or potential issues from warranty needed to be addressed with this version of engine? why does it weigh the same as the current GTi, if it's called a"clubsport? Why offer heavy 19" wheels with the Cup 2 tyres, but not on the special 18" Forged wheels which are 3kg lighter? Can the downforce claims be substantiated at all?
I know its only a Golf and many will never even see the car park at a track day, but not many people took Meganes to track days until they built one which excels at it. They have missed an opportunity for the 40th anniversary in my opinion, as they have 2 perfectly good cars for standard road duties in the GTI and R. And they have simple produced a trim level with a remap. I expressed an interest via emails at my dealer back in Aug after the "ring" pictures, but i'm now sure I can't drive around in a car called a clubsport without any clubsport credentials, its far too tacky. The clubsport in 5 door is just the icing on the cake if I'm honest...
-
^^^^ I agree with of what you say but not enough to stop me buying one. I just hope they don't bring out a Estate version  The R estate really makes me cringe, to me it just don't carry it off like the Audi RS models.
-
I know some of you would rather not talk less about the trim spec of the Clubsport and more about the dynamics and performance. But I had a dig around the internet to see if the centre console could fit with the Bucket Seats in a Golf MK7. As you will see on the pic below of the R400 with the same bucket seats with different upholstery it appears it can. So is the lack of centre console on the recent interior shots of the Clubsport what we will finally see in the finished car, or will it have a centre console/arm rest? (http://www.vwvortex.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/volkswagen-r400-5-960x640.jpg)
-
That is one gorgeous interior
-
Yeah I agree. However whether we will see the R400 in the near future is up for debate?

Volkswagen is lost / Design by committee / Designed to be all things.. a compromise.
As for the seats, they give them away (or they did) on RS Clio...
-
Wow, so went into my local dealers to discuss the clubport. I semed to know more about the car than the dealer did! but that aside he said that they couldnt get a discount on one due to the scarcity.
Then went on to offer me a new GTI with leather for 26800! That is 12% off list price.
What to do!

If there is no discount on the club sport it will help my decision making . If they are over subscribed then little chance of discount . However all is not well at Vw and with sales flagging you never no

I am tempted to get a GTI Clubsport, but am still getting those niggles of whether the Golf R would be more for the money. I will be pricing up both when the order books open for the Clubsport and see what is standard and what I can get discounted on both to help me decide. It seems like you get a better trim option on one and performance on the other. I keep thinking if the Clubsport is being compared to keeping up with an R on dry road then if the price is similar and with our climate why don't I just get a Golf R?
Will wait and see when the order books open next year.
-
VW is a huge company, they need cash flow to keep things ticking along.
When they bring the Clubsport to market are they likely to turn paying customers away?
Look at the Ed30, many quote 1/1500 cars, when there are nearer 2200 in the UK. Porsche were due to bring in 200 Cayman Gt4, they are currently trading at £25-30k over list, more cars are arriving which should bring the total to nearly 400. Mclaren said they would only make 500 LT, now another 500 are arriving in Spyder form.
VW need to sell cars, I wouldn't buy into the hype being generated before it arrives, too much!

Does anybody know if the Clubsport is optimised for 95 RON (like the GTI) or 98 RON fuel (like the R)?

I think I've said on this thread about a billion times now - this is the Cupra engine which is identical to the R engine.
VW wouldn't have invested hundreds of thousands in a new engine for a limited run model.
In 265 guise it's the same as the basic Cupra and in 290 (overboost button) guise it's the same as the Cupra 290 which is a 300 PS R engine with a different badge on the plastic cover.
So 98 RON.
(And R Mpg too which is the downside!!!)
-
I would expect the overboost facility would benefit from 98 Ron.
-
VW is a huge company, they need cash flow to keep things ticking along.
So did they discount the edition 30? I am told its not a limited edition but a limited release date meaning that the order window will be limited, but that there is no limit to how many within that window.
Its difficult with getting deals like 12% to make a decision.

The engine will require 98 for optimal performance, yes
The R can run on 95 too but not without performance penalties

The Golf GTI Clubsport will be built in 2016 only, this in itself means its going to be produced in limited numbers, probably very limited discount ability if at all and perhaps low volume for lease companies.

I have just watched a Netherlands you tube review on the GTI Clubsport. It claims the 5.9 sec 0-60 time stands for both Manual and DSG, but the 286bhp boost is available from pulling away with Launch Control on DSG where as the manual transmission does not get the 286bhp boost available until gears 3 to 6.
If the full power of the boost is available on DSG Launch Control then surely it will be quicker off the line, else what is the point of having DSG with launch control over a manual transmission?
-
Launch control ?
Are people really paying for this nonsense?
-
This is what I don't get if you had launch control you would think the car being quicker off the mark would produce a quicker 0-60 time. But it doesn't according to the figures put forward?? So is DSG on a GTI Clubsport worth the extra money?
-

You say it like the only reason to buy the DSG would have been because it produced an inconceivably real world 0-60 time better when launched. I guess most of the people on here who have DSG didn't buy them for the launch feature or the 0.00002sec improvement.
As Organisys says, do people really use launch control?
Interested to hear whether the Cupra Sub 8 or Megane 275 Trophy or Cup-S need to reduce HP until 3 gear? Both FWD with near as damn it same BHP.
-
Launch control ?

I used it once on the M4 just to see what the hype was, and put it this way, never bothered again!
-
Did not mean this was the only reason to buy DSG as I have wondered what it would be like to drive a golf with DSG myself. But just found it odd for the video review to state all the power of 286hp was available to the DSG launch control but not manual until gears 3 to 6 ?
I know there are many reasons to have DSG and as I state earlier I have even thought about trying it myself. I also understand Launch Control is hardly used if ever. It is just simply the comment made on the video baffles me a bit if DSG has the power on lower gears before it's available on Manual you would have though the 0-60 times may be faster for the DSG?
-

Gotcha, perhaps the chassis and front suspension just can't take the power and regardless of the launch feature it just can't apply it to the road so no actual gain perhaps?
Still makes me wonder how the talented Megane Trophy does it so well. Or even the Cupra on the same platform. The more i look at the Megane the more it ticks the boxes with the Ohlins, recaros and akrapovic exhaust (all options but available)
-
Just seen that the part numbers are in ETKA for the lettering strips on the bottom of the door sills.
Grey and Black, assumingly for dark and light cars, but 40th lettering and Clubsport, so maybe we will get a 40th version in UK?
Dave
-
I also wonder what other parts will be available!
-
Ran in to the salesman on Tuesday who sold me my gtd. He was due to call me yesterday but advised that specs will be out second week of Jan and he will get me in to finalise my order of the club sport. Depending on price I will make the move as my three years are up in sept.

Seat info is up on ETOS, its the only bit I could easily find as they stand out a mile. I guess the front splitter is available somewhere

this review seems to be based on a road test rather than the recent track launch in Portugal

-
Interesting review.
Sounds cracking actually.
-
From what I can make out, production starts from week 10.
And a lot of discussion if the cars are made after mid year being MY17, but it seems they won't be, so maybe a very limited sales window for them, but could mean dealers put I stock orders, so bargins to be had?
Who knows

Configure away (auf Deutsch bitte)
http://app.volkswagen.de/ihdcc/de/configurator.html#30300
-
Automatic only according to the configurator, 3 doors and 3 colours ?
-
I was also just posting about the gearbox..
When you get to the options section, there is a 4 door option for €900 extra.
They are taking the "clubsport" name in vain now!
-
Wow, looking at the pricing it looks like it may be £1-1.5k from a Clubsport to an R. But the GTI is crazy cheap in Germany (under £22k), so it's a bit hard to say - even after my 10 minutes of fiddling with Excel charts :D
-
I agree they are cheaper in Germany, however the spec is not the same .
Adaptive cruise appears on the option list for the Clubsport on that German VW configurator, I would expect it to be standard on UK cars, therefore more expensive?
-
Loads of things are missing from base spec GTI/GTD's in Germany - the car is on the face of cheaper and then slightly more expensive when you add all of the base UK spec.
They do get a lot more colour choice though!
-

Am I missing something, I cant see the CS option?
-
Been removed, maybe back the 14th as that's when its launched.
Dave
-
Wow, it wouldn't be a VW website update without it being ballsed up
-
Gutted, got me all excited!
Did anyone notice what wheel options were available?
-
About €3,500 more than a equivalent PP GTi?
So maybe £2k more?
Really close to R list price, with probably no discount...mmm....
Wheel options seem to be a pack of Prets with Cup 2 Tyres and DCC from what I can understand for €3k, but the DCC bit is in question. So around maybe £1800 for Prets with Cup 2 tyres.
Dave
-

There were the standard 18" wheels and 3 choices for 19": the silver angled wheels, prets and a black alloy that could have been prets or a similar design - didn't look too close.
-
Here we all are fretting over colours all 9 or however many we can chose from and ze Germans get a palate that's larger than paint on my work PC. I know they are upwards of £1500 but still. Imagine that in the UK and the debates on here.
-
Been to local dealer and they have said their info system 'dashboard' will update on the 13th if the car is launched on the 14th.
Will keep you posted.
They have one pre-order on and ours may be the second.

Ah I see now.
I'm over in Frodsham. Have used Warrington before but found Chester to be alot more helpful especially when chasing bits for MK2s.

Clubsport is back on vw.de now.
No big suprises than first "unofficial" release.
Oryx White is not standard, plain Black is. Typical colours, Pure White, DBP, Silver, Carbon, Red and Oryx.
Interesting you can have a non black roof option.
4x Wheel choices, but reckon we will only get 3x non black prets. Prets are €3k option with Cup Tyres
No word yet when UK books open.

Oryx white with the black pret's looks sublime! will be hoping this is available and will be slamming the car straight onto VWR lowerings springs :)
-
Love it, but those wheels are awful!
-
have also noticed that this is only available in DSG? is that the general thought that this will be the only option?
-
Yep, bit odd as the press models have all been manual?
Dave
-
DE configurator will be adjusted to accommodate the manual option shortly.
I have just had a conversation with Volkswagen UK and they have advised that it is not released yet and they also don’t have any inclination as to when it will be.
-
Typical!
I reckon it won't be till Feb time till UK orders open.
Dave
-
I'm under that impression too Dave

Have just browsed the VW Germany configurator for the GTI Clubsport. It appears the seats are just the standard affair currently on the regular GTI except with Alcantara and upholstery from the concept. I cannot find the buckets any where on the site? Does this mean we cannot have the seats from the concept after all.
Starting to make the Golf R look like a better prospect already if they have cut back on the seats what else have they cut back on? :undecided:
-
How come there are two Tornado Red options too?
-

I believe one option is for a tornado red car with a black roof. The other is for the whole car finished in just tornado red, including the roof.

Oops having a dim moment. Although I had not translated the website as was in a rush. Will have another look. The reason I said about the seats was on my configurator the seats image was the standard seats without touching any settings? Bit odd. Will have another look.
-
You can have standard seats for free, gawd knows why though....

There's a pack or a particular option that removes them when selected.
Can't remember which though.
-

Dave
Was looking at some German forums this morning and it seems that if you select bucket seats some options , such as keyless entry/start, cannot be selected...... Due to the fact that with bucket seats you can't have the central armrest and apparently that option was wired from there....
-
Seat questions...
Are they height adjustable, or fixed?
also from what I can see, you can't have ambient lighting if taking the buckets? And that means no red strips on door tops and tread plates?
Dave
-
No red lighting strips?
That on it's own is enough to put me off buying one! :)
-
Yeah shame, cos I really like the red door top strips too.
But that's what I can make out anyway.
Also odd is, if you have the leather option standard seats (which are quite nice actually) you get illuminated tread strips with GTI logo, but if going cloth, you don't?
Dave
-
Wondered if anyone had heard anything from their dealer?
Have paid a deposit and I am ready to pull trigger....just want to know when
-
Order books open February 1st in Austria, so maybe we will get the same date here.
It should be soon as they are only running it, from what I can make out until the light facelift comes out for MY17 cars anyway?
Still some odd parts on spec, such as red strips on front seat belts only among those stated above.
Seems some delays on the 18" forged (standard wheels too) to calendar weeks 18-21, where as 19" wheels from week 12 for the German ordered cars.
I really think they tried the best to shoe horn these wider bucket seats in, just to make it different buts it seems to take a lot of options out, which are nice to have as standard.
I guess like the ED35, we may not get the Alacantara option of standard seats in UK and just leather or buckets?
Lets wait and see....
Dave
-
PS, no front parking sensors either due to bumper shape and mouldings it seems.
I guess we will still get ACC in UK as standard so you may not hit anything

Is 2017 a confirmed date for the facelift Golf then?
-
It would be strange. I've never know a golf to get a end of life facelift. Its usually runs straight into the next model...
-
Been told by my local dealership from whom I purchased my GTD that we should have more news end of this month early Feb. I'm happy to wait until then. After that its decision time go for an R or wait on a clubsport.
Specs a massive thing for me. I know it's a limited run but you don't want to be paying just shy of couple of grand (if that) less than an r but you get less in terms of standard spec. Yes it will be rare but is that enough???

From the front shot it looks like it doesn't have Xenons. Don't think I could go back to halogen lights after having Xenons.

Not sure about that, I think it might just be a bad shot of it. They look like xenons to me.
I get what you mean about not being able to go back to halogen lights. I drove my Mk2 a few weeks back at night and it was a bit frightening to say the least especially when meeting other cars.
-
Definitely xenons. The halogen units don't have the red stripe (Early MK7 GTI's here in Ireland didn't have xenons).

18" Forged Rims now on German Ebay

Not a bad looking rim actually.
Dave

They do look good, they remind me of 70's Fuchs alloys. Very Germanic.
How much are they up for out of interest? they must be quite expensive to make.

Dave
Any mention of actual weight?
-
7.6 KG
-
7.6 KG
That seems very light, as the Oz Ultraleggera are .5kg heavier in 18's, it would be amazing if they got the wheel strong and lighter than OZ Ultra's, where did you get the 7.5kg? Great news if correct
-
I got the info from the German Golf GTI forum, very good informative Clubsport section there. The Belvederes are weighing in at 7.6kg with the Pretotias at 9.6kg and the Brescias at a whopping 11.5kg. According to the manufacturers website of the Belvederes they are 7.9kg but this figure is being disputed as VW are saying they are 7.6kg. Also I found out on the German forum that the bucket seats have issues with several owners complaining about rattles and it seems little can be done about it.

I'm sure the manufacturers must be wrong as good old VW would never tell porkies would they?
-
That does seem light for an 18 x 7.5 wheel.
For example the lightest wheel Porsche have fitted in that size (made by BBS) was 9.3KG.
If the car is to be used on track, I wonder how aluminium wheels of that weight will hold up to riding the kerbs?
Which wheels were fitted for the ring lap?

It was a very difficult decision, but then I'm happy I ordered my Clubsport with the leather seats...

Prets. Because they are the only ones with the Cup tyres, you can buy the lighter 18's but they come with normal tyres and the heavier and larger Prets come with the track tyres? Yes it is a bit weird.
Probably goes to show that its the tyres that make the big difference on all these Ring times...
Both wheels are nice though
-
Yeah, definitely the tyres.
I ordered buckets, after initially going for cloth.
I think its one of the main features of the car, but time will tell.
In fact, I think car will be here in a couple of weeks.
Dave
-
Can't wait to see some pics.
-
I'll second that.
Would appreciate pics.
What other options did you go for Dave?
-
Pretty basic to be honest, 3 door manual, carbon grey, buckets, dynaudio and tints.
Still says stage 4 on the tracker, but dealer said it was built last week.
Maybe its getting the issues with suppliers?
Dave
-
I remember getting jealous about the colour you ordered now....
Think the tracker is as useful as a chocolate tea pot.

My preference was initially also the buckets, but main reasons I went for the leather is that I'm tall and afraid they buckets might be too short for good head support (for me). It's indeed a/the main feature of the Clubsport.
-
I'm looking forward to a forum member actually taking delivery of a CS or CSS.
Hope they post plenty of detailed pictures and hope the long wait is worth it

+1
I was sceptical in the beginning but reviews were great about them being supportive but not Megane RS Trophy-hard and they definitely are the trademark item of the Clubsport imo, not the same car without them.
Haven't read anything about rattles so far and I've spoken with a couple of owners who run them. We'll see what's the case, picking up next week.
Also, I think Belvedere is the real Clubsport wheel. Pretoria is nice mainly for the rubber that comes with it (although that can be easily retro-fitted) but it's out so long already on the R that really feels like the Golf R wheel. Brescias, well I can't say much about them without forum moderators intervening  both in terms of looks and weight. I wonder what they were thinking when they decided to even offer them as an option on this particular car...
-

Belvedere is indeed a 7.6kg forged wheel, confirmed by the manufacturer itself (Fuchs) :

That's super light even by aftermarket, not just OEM, standards. And to be offered as stock on the Clubsport is hugely impressive, suits the character of the car just perfect. In comparison, Leon Cupra sub8 wheels weigh 11,8 kg and are made by Ronal.
I second the 11,5 kg weight of the Brescia (no link of them but VW part number is: 5G0 601 025 CL), they are clearly a design, not race/sport wheel, and even that "design" is highly subjective imo. Why would anyone even pay to add a whopping 4 kg of unsprung mass on every corner on a track focused car like the Clubsport is beyond me.

Nice pics. I assume that's csg? There also looks like space for the radar city break? I was under the impression that the front splitter didn't allow it.

yes DSG. and yes that is the emergency city break at the front. What gets deleted is the front parking sensors but the city break stays.

I'm in Sweden and here the Bi-Xenons are an extra but I think the UK spec has them as standard. Other than the DSG and bucket seats, rest of added options were DCC adaptive ride, Dynaudio Hi-Fi, Discover Pro Nav, rear parking sensors with camera and electrically folding mirrors.
On the other hand, cruise control with city brake assist and winter pack are standard here.

Out of interest, have you got any engine bay pics?
From the evo review of the S there is a pic showing part of the bay and a relocated washer bottle. I assume the airbox is larger.

Clusport looks standard GTI, S has relocated bottle, intake doesn't look different.

I didn't expect the salesman to go as far as shooting the engine bay and... he didn't disappoint!
I'll get my own proper photos and vids once I pick it up.

Thanks, can you confirm the "Sports seats" are the same design as the regular GTI/R just with a different finish?
-
Yes they are the same seats as the GTI/R but of course with different covers. They also have leatherette inserts which the R does not have and is an option on the GTI.

It also has the brake servo and reservoir on the right hand side or near side, as if its a left hand drive model? Are these pics from a right hand drive car? If they are its an interesting decision (big assumption coming up) as I thought the change of servo and reservoir locations was due to RH and LH drive cars
