So, after two and a half years of being on this forum and actually owning a GL, I have now converted to a GTi, and a 16v at that. So here's the story.
I saw this car last year when Billy_vw owned it, looked quite tidy and needed a little work doing to it. However, me being Shady I never have any money, so couldn't afford to buy it from him. This year I saw it in the classified section and as I was due to get a new car, I thought I'd have it.
Pics from the ad:

I went to collect it Saturday, leaving for the train at 3pm. Arriving in Birmingham (from Yeovil) at 7:30pm. Long bloody train ride when you're billy-no-mates. I got there and had a chat with Richard looked over the car and was happy with what I saw, so made the purchase. Proceeding to drive it home that same night, not getting into Yeovil until gone 12am as I didn't leave Birmingham until just gone 9pm. This was a good drive though, allowing me to test the water with my new car, and I was very impressed.
Now some may notice the lights on the back, not my thing so guess what, they have come off, so has the Momo steering wheel so I could put on my Polo wheel. The wheels are early TT wheels I believe, but they were initially (upon purchase) sitting on some chavtastic rims, hurts your eyes in my opinion. I have changed them back to the TT wheels now though.
Here are some pics as today has been the first say I've had to do anything to it.

The plans are to sort out some paint on particular sections, and give it a good clean using the most comprehensive methods using only my two hands, and the products I have. Subtle changes such as badges to follow soon.
Bigger changes entail the possibility of polishing the TT rims until I find some rims that will suit something, a bit more...extravagant. Oh and of course GolfGTi Forum stickers to be placed in tomorrow or Wednesday.
:afro:

It's a nice motor. Bet your pleased after today. Quite abit of a transformation, more to take place tomorrow.
No thanks for the work I put into it
-
Thank you for your help today mate. You know I appreciated it. :afro:
-
Vast improvement already :afro:
I like the audi rims, they suit the car. Loving the colour as well, don't see many around!
Looking forward to seeing what happens next
-
nice one shady! so glad you got a mk3!
-
Thank you for your help today mate. You know I appreciated it. :afro:
Cheers man,
I think your Hellas and the black or orange(?) badge would look good.

Me to chap. They do indeed suit it, I think a polished finish would go well with the grey, and as you said you don't see many around in such a colour which is another reason I wanted it.
nice one shady! so glad you got a mk3!
Well couldn't let the team down now could I?
-
Are you fitting your hella "quins?"
-
Looking good dude! I like it!
Much needed changes, but good to see you have done the essentials already
-
Looking good Shady  glad your in another mk3!
Dan

Looking good there Shady.
Rears are a big improvement :afro:
-
I have those rear lights on my car :lipsrsealed:
I've always had a soft spot for that colour! It's about time you actually owned a car worthy of being on this forum!
Hella Quins - Nooooo please don't do it! EVERY one fooking does it!
The cars looking good and i can't wait to see how it will transform :afro:
*Maybe it's about time i started a Project Thread? lol
-
Nice work Kirk. Glad you finally made your mind up
Should have come seen me en route to Birmingham!!
-
Not bad mate.
Nick

Yeah still got to do a few things, especially sort the paint out but at least it's looking good with a few simple mods.
Are you fitting your hella "quins?"
I'm not sure, I might do, although I did want a different approach with this car.
Looking good Shady  glad your in another mk3!
Dan
I've always had a soft spot for the barge, so I couldn't resist.
Looking good there Shady.
Rears are a big improvement :afro:
The M3 lights in all seriousness were doing me no favours, just wasn't my thing.

I think it is about time you started a project thread, lazy git. I've got some good ideas on what to do but it's all time and money permitting at the moment.
Nice work Kirk. Glad you finally made your mind up
Should have come seen me en route to Birmingham!!
I was on the train on the way up, and if I drove down I doubt you'd want to see me at 11pm. LOL!
Not bad mate.
Nick
Thanks Nick. :afro:

The Halford specials were just  I felt like a complete chav in Yeovil, it was almost as if those wheels allowed me to fit in with the majority of modified car owners here.

I think with a polished finish the wheels would look ace on here, and the badge is a VW Owners Club badge, soon to be removed, just want to do it properly.
-
was thinking that myself kells...
saw one on a polo saying i love porn yesterday :D would suit shady that ;)

  How did you know?
I need to get some forum stickers on there, at least I won't be living a lie by having them on unlike with the GL.
-
Put some thought into this and distinguish yourself from other MK3s
Don't put on Hella Quins/Joey Modded Lights/Vento front/D90s/Borbet A's/jamex or hottuning coilies!
They've all been done since the 90's!! try go a different route to stand out!
-
Yes Mum, I will do that.
It has Supersport Coliovers which( not knowing who the hell Supersport are) are very comfy, especially in comparison to the Hottuning ones which I didn't think were even that bad. I'm probably just going to whack my Hella Twins on for now as I haven't got money to do anything else, so yeah.....
-
Should of got a VR6
-
^ like what, nothing much left :D ;)
-
Nice car boyo

Good boy,
I'm not telling you, i'm begging you not to lol
^ like what, nothing much left :D ;)
Theres not  but that's what makes a car different
I'm not saying they don't look nice, there's some really awesome examples about i.e Kells GTi, LLs 20vT and Drews GTi all have at least two of them and they schweeeet!!
-
lol i know mate, but hey, im still waiting for this mk2 front one :D
anyway off topic, but shady did do nice job of his last one so im sure this one has a good future, enjoy it i say!
-
Don't put those silly Hella Quads on!

What do you care? You're a MK4 owner.
Black badges are must for now too, front and back.

With respect what else can you do to make a mk3 different.
My point is your hardley making it different, in fact your making it more the same then anything. You can just not put them on lol Theres 100's of other wheels that you could look for! so many other types of suspension! there are other brands of lights you can purchase..
But hey ho, that's just my opinion. Shady, do what ever the fcuk you like!
-
Don't put those silly Hella Quads on!

Yeah go away.
I got three of things you listed Jamie! Then I lol'd.

But hey ho, that's just my opinion. Shady, do what ever the fcuk you like!
I was gonna.
In all fairness I understand what you're saying, and I do have some ideas, first thing I told Adam was "I want to go a different route with this car." So it's in the pipeline.
-
If your going for polished wheels i would personally keep the silver badges, then change the lower indicators for the crystal versions instead. Think that if you have bright wheels then you should brighten everything else up rather than having some sleeper/some bling parts.
I think it would look mint with the shiny bits, then maybe some chrome detailing under the hood
But thats just me wishing I had a mk3 again, so I shall shut up

haha but you've made your car a little different with what you have. What's the 3 you have? Borbets, Hellas and?? Do you see my point though? I'm not condeming it as i i like all of that stuff bar the suspension!

I see what you're saying, the engine bay will be getting some attention too at some point as I actually have a bay worth looking at. Will have to try out some things when the time comes closer for new wheels and parts to match.
Looking good buddy!

So BBS wheels and coilovers then
The coilovers were already on the car so they can stay, BBS wheels won't be coming near this one though.

GL badges FTW.

I didn't know that, but what I do know, is you won't be driving it whilst it's under my ownership.
-
You should get the GL back from the scrap yard - chop the front off of it, chop the back off the new one and then weld them together.
That way people would think you're reversing up the motorway.
That'd be different.
-
Looking forward to see what you do with it bud :)

Sorry Hella Twin haters, I couldn't help myself.

both!
if you get someone to polish them for you then its not too bad but you will definately need to keep on top of them and winter use will be out of the question really. i ruined my bbs splits in 3 weeks last winter...
you could get them polished and laquered but if moisture gets under the laquer (which it will) then you cant do anything. at least you can repolish tarnished wheels.
i am about to polish another set of bbs lips and i recon there's about 5 hours work in each rim.
at least the audi wheels are a nice flat profile
for what my opinion matters, i like the twin lights!
-
So what happened to doing something different.
What is the patch under the rubbing strip.

Wayne, it takes time to be different. You should know what with your car choices.
Thanks for the info lewis, I think I'll look into polishing as a short term option for wheels, as I quite like these and then I'll be a bit more adventurous when funds allow.

Its the f**king Catalina Wine Mixer!
Quins have transformed it. Thank you very much, good night. Much love.

Alright Tibbs, calm down. It does transform it doesn't it. I think I'm going to keep them on, at least until I sort something else out which will be some time yet. Almost looks like the covers a colour-coded.

not sure on orange forn the badge but hey ho
now whats this about a traffic light GP v a 8 valver
-
There was no traffic light battle. Given that I was already in front, began slowing down as the lights were red and then the 8v came by the right, there was no stop > start. :afro:
Looking good matey! Very nice!
What happened to my steering wheel? Haha!
I've decided I'm keeping it. :lipsrsealed: It's replaced the Momo wheel and has been badly modded for a non-airbag GTi.

Thank you khare, it's a good crew to be in.

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
Flattering Brad Kells strikes me as a bad idea - his ego is delicate enough at that size already.
-
I can't believe we're on 8 pages already and all he's done is change the lights!

I wondered how long it would take you to start slagging of Kells in ANOTHER thread, how predictably boring :embarassed:

from well under 90 to 150bhp in 1 move.......good on you

Sweet ride Kirk, 9 pages though? Calm down people!

Thank you mate, there are bigger plans but just the norm will happen for now, keep it looking tidy at least.

-
Nice mk3 m8 great coluor hellas nice touch, but then i would say that
-
9 pages
Anyway, nice car mate. Are you going to DIY the door or get it sprayed. I'd imagine it would cost £30-£50 to have just that bit blown in which while maybe not being a perfect match, would be miles better then a can job. Otherwise it would need blowing in on the front door as well.
Looks great with the Hella's actually, think it looks nice mate.
One thing though, I know they are played but with a rarer colour on this car (which is lovely :afro:) I reckon a Vento front with an early grill would look great!
-
Congrats on the new car. It's a fantastic colour
-
Coor, I'm loving the reaction with this car. I only got it to please myself, so I'm glad so many others are pleased with it too.

I'll get the spray place to do it as I can't be arsed with it looking crap. Hopefully won't be too expensive.
-
Man those lights have made the car look awesome! They look better than on the GL :lipsrsealed:
Seem to suit black/grey more than other colours IMO :undecided:
-
looks real nice dude love the colour :)
the 16" speedlines suit mk3s so well I reckon, same as I've got on mine
-
OMD Shady, YES.
Colour is brilliant. If you want any Recaro front seats and don't want your old BBS wheels, let me know!
-
Cheers guys. :)
-
Enjoy your new motor
I can't believe it took Chuff 5 pages to make a comment on it.
-
I remember when I first got a 16v, it was a mk2 though.
I went from a mk2 1.6 driver to a mk2 16v. It feels good doesn't it Shady? I still remember the day i got the 16v.
Enjoy
-
Oh yes, very nice increase. Still getting used to it if I'm honest, but don't want to push it too hard whilst I'm learning the car.
-
sweet ride shady!!!
something about that colour that makes me go
-
nice ride mate if you did polish the rims it would be

More the fact I don't want to run it into a tree and just lose out altogether. Don't worry, I have put my foot down, just getting used to the way it works.

Your car may as well be switched off and walk until you get to around 4k, thats when its fun
Other than expecting it to go up the revs quicker over 4k, there isn't a lot more to learn

Your car may as well be switched off and walk until you get to around 4k, thats when its fun
Other than expecting it to go up the revs quicker over 4k, there isn't a lot more to learn
I noticed it starts pulling around the 4K mark, first and second gear are especially fun.

Drive it like you stole it man.

lol dont you know he did, no one would actually let shady buy a 16v :D ;)
-
Haven't actually seen any engine bay pics yet? Is this really just your GL resprayed?
-
I'll get an engine bay pic up tomorrow. Problem I have though is the HT leads don't fit into their slots on the plastic cover.
-
i have got a set of brand new tt coms (still boxed) if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer chap but I've no money whatsoever at the moment.

I was looking at buying that car but chose mine instead! Nice car mate, and it's a valver

I'm glad I got there before you, I picked up a gem as far as I'm concerned.

You did indeed. I chose not to as it's a 16V and I'd rather pay less insurance. Plus I REALLY wanted an anni.

That's weird because the 8v was only £40 cheaper for me, and an Anni was actually more expensive than both (due to it's higher desirability I assume).

8v somehow worked out at £150-£200 more than my valver on insurance.. work that one out

Looks good mate
Yes to the Hellas and yes to polishing the Audi rims

Cheers chrisford, and also thanks for that info in the PM. :afro:
I took her to Lyme Regis today, from Yeovil, along A roads mainly with lots of twists and turns, several blasts and a few stop/starts, and averaged about 37mpg, but managed to get her upto:

Not hard considering your GL had a fooked engine

Danny saw 40MPG out of the ABF in his Syncro on the way back from the 'ring in 2008.
On part throttle loads it's a very clean running, frugal engine...... it just needs a drink when you nail it, which is only fair!

That is true, however even before the engine was officially fooked the 16v is better than the GL was.

When I drove it back from Birmingham I managed to get the mpg up to 38.6, it was only on the day after I realised that was the second setting, so that was overall. I'd like to have known what I got it to on the first setting given the circumstances.

Well sold the M3 lights yesterday, somebody came from Exeter to get them. Rolling on today, I gave her a very good clean inside and out, could of done a bit more but got tired in the sun. Took her for a small photoshoot and here they are:

TT comps are 17" and polished finish, Shady's I believe are 16" which were fitted to lower spec TT and A3's

Wayne is correct. Mine are also 16s but when they are polished they will look even better. Will just be a pain to keep them clean.

15 pages already?

I'd say do it. VR6 keep it in your garage and do what you were going to do.

Maybe..... :P
And no they are not TT comps, as they have different styled centers.
I have seen these ones polished somewhere, need to find pics!

I think once these TT wheels are polished it'll set it off nicely.

Agreed.
Im getting quotes at the moment for mirror polishing some ATS cups with a few companies, will let you know who is cheaper and gives a better finish once im completed in my research.

Today has been a very prouctive day indeed. I completely cleaned the interior, taking the seats out and hoovering everywhere, cleaning all the trim so there's not a spec of dust. I followed this up by sorting out the wiring in the boot for the sub and amp.
Then things got a little more 'mechanical' for me, which is new really. I removed the throttle body and cleaned it, as well as clearing up the dizzy. The car has been a little hesitant every now and then lately so thought I'd do these. Also changed the air filter for a pipercross one, all in all the things I've done seem to have improved the way the car is running. :)
-
Well done for switching to a 16v. Yea I am a mk2 owner venturing out!
Havent seen ya down Budgens yet.
Where did you take those pics? Yeovil I bet somewhere. Whereabouts?
And I am sorry, but the Pass Door color difference would do my nut in!
-
Cheers pal. The car is great and much better all round than my GL was, the colours will be sorted eventually though, possibly a full respray on the cards.
I don't work at Budgens anymore, I started my new job last week.
-
nice 16v, never been a fan of hella quads, but suits urs. o and i like the kamei lower grill slates ( probs coz ive just brought a pair  ). suprised no ones said about them. they look nice coz its works well with the virtical slats along the front bumper and works with the horizontal slats of the grill.
-
Thanks man. Yeah I'd say the Hella Twins only work on certain MK3s, thankfully grey is one of them.
As for the grills, I'm not sure I like them, will probably put the originals back on at some point.

Oooohhhh yeah  Hang on...having something that previously belonged to Shady...on my car...can only mean bad things with his luck! ...
-
I broke it today. Having to catch a lift with a colleague as it won't be moving anywhere right now.
I took it over to Adam's as we were going to inspect a possible gear linkage problem, before doing so however, I was going to take the oil breather hoses off, and stupidly took one of that turned out to be a fuel line. Now this would be a bad, if I hadn't of broken this:
It's the bit that keeps the hose secure in the slot, and the end seal had snapped, along with the outer bracket. With it being a Sunday I was unable to attempt getting a new one, so first chance tomorrow I'll be going to VW to order a couple of bits.
Never trust Shady with a car, that's all I can say.

Often find that the small parts are amongst the most expensive
I priced up the PCV system for the 1.8T when Dave was doing his conversion. He could install a catch tank and have about £50-£70 change

She's alive! Got the part on my lunch and just went to Adam's to go and sort it out. Cheers for the help again Ad. :afro:

Well done shady!!
Glad ya got it sorted, these things happen eh!
No need o explain why your a legend mate :D

Should hopefully be getting my wheels polished this week or early next week. Should bring a nice shine to the car. Next big thing will be getting a respray. This is actually on the cards, but it's based on time and money right now.
-
Lemme know where you go for those jobs and how much they were and if they were any good, looking into getting it done myself soon.
-
Who's doing you wheels mate?

Just purchased two new tyres, which will be delivered to the place I'm getting my wheels polished. Should have them by the end of next week. Also have my old backbox on from the old GL now too.
-
This car is filth i love it

This car is filth i love it
I hope that means good. I can't wait to get the polished TTs on it. Hopefully looking at getting a full respray done at some point as well. I am also thinking long term, if I can get the outside looking the way I want, a 20VT might be on the cards in a year or so. :lipsrsealed:
-
tis a compliment!
-
Thanks bud. :)
-
Was hoping to have the wheels this weekend but looks like they might be a little longer being done, next week they should be on. Locking wheel nuts purchased to secure them too, don't want any pikeys stealing my sh!t.
I also spent today with carb cleaner, even got some in my f**king eye. In the words of Will, "Brilliant!".
Cleaned the idle control valve, but doesn't seem to have cured my slightly lumpy idle. I'm still losing oil but I think I know where it's coming from, the most likely place is the oil pressure switch so I've cleaned that all up today and going to keep an eye on it these next few days, the second potential place is the rocker cover, seems to be a slight leakage from there so again, cleaned that and will keep an eye on it.
Most of my day with the car consisted of me cleaning up some of the engine bay, but the main cleaning was done on this:
Which I have turned to this:
Needs some more work but looking a lot cleaner.
That's all for now. :)
-
Looking smoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth Spady! You need to get the plastic cover for the ISV, would look much better!
-
Looking smoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth Spady! You need to get the plastic cover for the ISV, would look much better!
I did, but took it off as the cables don't fit in due to being so thick. Tried a DIY mod but that went tits up so through the cover away. Would like to get the rest of the bay looking clean, carb cleaner and some clothes, and plenty of hours and elbow grease might do the trick haha!
Can't wait to get my wheels on, should look schweet then, but before I go ahead with anything else after those I need to get my sills replaced I think, looks like there's a decent amount of rust forming under there unfortunately .
-
it could be a little late in this thread to say this but im loving your mk3 dude!!!! very nice
-
Never too late bud, thank you for the compliment.
-
no worries dude, have you had the wheels back yet??
-
I think I actually prefer those to proper TT comps.

No not yet bud, still awaiting them, hopefully end of this week. I'm eager too lol!

Yeah me as well, the Comps are too widthy (not a real word I know lol).
-

Widthy is a word that if it described a burger... I'd buy 9.

I've just bought the most important mod for the car...GolfGTi Forum number plate holders to go with my (yet to be acquired) pressed UK plates. Also have my old twin exhaust on but could do with straightening up as it's on the bend at the moment.
Been thinking about the paintwork lately, and it's really beginning to piss me off, but at the same time I can't afford to get it sprayed, not given my personal circumstances now, so I have been considering a DIY spray job, matte black or something. Thoughts?
-

Not wishing to be rude but why ruin it with a diy paint job.
Yes funds are tight but seems a shame to me.

Because I'm never going to be able to afford £1000+ in my time of owning the car. I'm sporting a proper "Shady Look" with 3 different shades of grey over the car. At least if it's DIYd it'll be the same colour all over until (if I) got it resprayed properly.

prep it, rent compressor and gun, spray it. job done

Fair point, still seems a shame to diy it.
-
Don't DIY it.
It's extremely difficult to do a good job, that's why its expensive.
-
Shady, we know you can be a bit of a c0ck but please don't do it!
Which panels are the ones that need spraying? I know the door does, but what else?
Prep it yourself and just get the panels rather then the whole car. Then give the rest a full detail to bring it back to good health (Adam to do it, i wouldn't trust you) Or have you thought about obtaining a machine polisher and trying to match it back?
-
It's a tough call, it depends how confident you are about doing the job in the first place and do you actually want it to be something like matte black?.... I am doing mine soon (satin) but this is because many panels have just been replaced and i have to repair quite a few dents, pluse the car is already black and i actually want it to be satin for a bit. The difference is I am confident I will do a good job and I do intent to save for a proper respray back to her original colour.
Some of the suggestions here have been good, as already asked, how bad is it really?... could you not see about getting a quote to get it touched up, duff panels sprayed and a good mop over?
-
Personally I like the matt black look but with your car as its a really nice colour and not to common I would save your money and get the panels painted which need doing. My car needed the roof, lower drivers door, whole passanger door ,tailgate and top drivers side rear quarter painting and he also painted my hellas and front grill I saved and it cost me £600,I still need the bonnet doing but im in no rush but I was thinking of flattening mine down so it went like a matt red before I had it painted, but im glad I didnt.Just save some money and get some quotes might not be as much as you think be a shame if you done it and it didnt suit it you would just be back to square one.
-

I think thats the point though, he needs probably similar to you and £600 just isnt possible??... as you say though, still worth getting a couple of quotes to help make your mind up, each cars needs are different and so are sprayers prices.
-
dont do it! diy matt or any other job is a lazy pants way of doing it.
just wait til you an actually afford to do it or try to source some new panels with a better colour match.
-
Talk to a college.
They'll do a professional job of it for the cost of the paint.
-
Talk to a college.

This is a great idea.
If you are still going to matte black the car then be careful. Some matte black cars are really patchy and look awful, others take things a bit slower but even with rattle cans the result can be awesome.
-
Also if you do DIY it and then go on to get it done properly at a later date, chances are it will cost a hell of a lot more to get all the rattlecan paint off. 2k auto paint doesn't tend to agree with it!
-
Also a major factor to consider is, if your spraying skills are like your mechanical skills....well...i think you know where this is going!
-
If your set on doing this Shady I'll fire up the compresser and do it at my place with a spray gun?
Remember the storage charge
-
just scrap it - problem solved
-
Or be original and rat it.

Pressed plates and forum plate holders were stuck on today, nice little touch. My old exhaust is on from the GL now too, adds a touch of chav to it. Still a no show on the wheels but I'm hoping this week they will be done and on. We will see. Pics to follow once wheels are on.
-
Today was a productive day. Had the headlining out and most of the trim so I could replace the sunroof as the old one had been broken. Wasn't too hard of a job really and all is good now, just needs a clean down on the inside due to dirt and oil.
Also put an old VR splitter on as my old one broke and I was using the GTi one which didn't look right.
Wheels hopefully this week!!
-

I know...Its becuse its MK3.
Problem solved.
Tidy.
Jonathan.

2 weeks, 2 wheels, gonna be a push, lol
-
Better get a move on then.
-
lol, im sh!tting it!
dont wanna mess it up, but i really want it in the calendar :D
plus, im gonna leather my overdraft getting the bits for it :D
how much have you ended up paying for your refurb?
-
Lol! Well that's what the overdraft is for... I'm paying £170 altogether. :afro:
-
thats not bad m8!
fingers crossed ya get them in time for the calendar!!!
-
Looking good.
Does the whole car have imperfections then? Be a shame to DIY spray as it would cost a whole lot more to respray because there is not a lot worse then spraying over aerosol thanks to the paint sinking into it. The whole car would have to be sanded back.
How bright are your indicators at the back? Kells did a good job there, did he only tint the indicators?
Cheers.
-
Yeah Kells did them. Got some standard ones too but keeping those for spares.
As for spraying, I think I'm going to try and wait for a proper job to be done. I'm going to see about having it sprayed with the can I've got which is meant to be a match for the bottom rear quarter, but the rest will have to wait for now.

As for spraying, I think I'm going to try and wait for a proper job to be done. I'm going to see about having it sprayed with the can I've got which is meant to be a match for the bottom rear quarter, but the rest will have to wait for now.
Are they bright enough?
Ahh best bet otherwise things start getting messy. As long as it's prepped properly cans can actually look OK. Dom's spray job looks wicked for a can!
-
Yeah perfectly fine, they let the right amount if light through.
-
Cool I might give mine ago.
Cheers.

I spent a good 2 days just prepping the little bits that I sprayed and about a day spraying, turned out alright and it was the first time i'd ever done anything like that. Like you I couldn't afford to get it done professionally at the time so decided to give it ago myself as a temporary measure.
It looks better than it did but isn't perfect, as soon as i've got a bit of spare cash i'll get them done properly

Should be getting my polished TT wheels tomorrow. Good times.

If I can't get the tires fitted today then I'll take a picture or two of the wheels, but they are going to look SWEET once on the car.

Forgot to mention I've got a nice new addition coming later in the week that will add a dash of red to the interior. :lipsrsealed:

What do you all think?

Pics 3, 4 and 5 are spot on :afro: Very cool mk3
-
Looks very nice Shady
Whats the profile of the tyres, 45's..? think you should have gone down to 40's.
They look very similar to the 17" comps which with stretch tyres look very nice, think you'd get a similar look 195/40/16's.
Oh and whats that exhaust, looks abit  think that need changing.
-
Awesome mate!!!

The profile is actually 40, 205/40 I believe. As for the exhaust it's off of my old MK3, it'll stay for now as it doesn't look too bad, it's a twin 3.5" but may look at going down to a 2.5" instead, it's only a backbox anyway.
Awesome mate!!!
Glad you approve.

Looking good there Matey :afro:

Cheers pal, I think they suit it as well, something different to the norm (to a certain extent) but not looking forward to keeping them clean.
Looking good
Thank you. :afro:

Possibly, it does poke out a tad doesn't it, but it doesn't come that far out, might have to see about doing that suggestion though. Easier said than done however.
-
Yeah no idea how easy it would be to do, and it probably looks worse than it is in the pic! The back box I put on my mk2 stuck out too much and thats what I did to sort it out
-
Looks flipping great!
Rims really suit the car and the color.
I actually like the exhaust, just looks like it could do with cleaning up :p
-
just had a read of this thread. really like your car.
wheels look fantastic. are they bare alloy or lacquered? are you going to run them through winter?
-
Thanks Alex :) they look wicked in person too!
Lewis, thanks for the compliment, the wheels are bare metal but I won't be running them during the winter, they will be coming off in a few weeks.
-
sensible chap. its going to be horrible taking them off just after fitting them!
i ran bare metal polidhed splits on the wife's golf last year but i was constantly having to polish them. ended up missing a few days out then gave up. by the end of the winter they had a build up of crud on them and took hours to sort out again.
-
Wheels look seriously
I'm with LL, I like the exhaust :afro:
-
Im liking what you are doing

Bit of a close up. I've actually got red dice for valve caps now though. :)

Really liking this car, looks kinda like mine but I'm still unsure if it is exactly the same colour or not... I've put some pictures of it in this thread http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=172542.10 what do you think?
I was unsure if it would look any good with another colour as mine looks kinda green in the pic but yours looks really nice with the red detailing, do people ever paint callipers anything other than red? blue could look nice on mine I was thinking with some better alloys. What do you reckon?
Also I really like the headlights on yours, are they standard gti rear lights or something else?
Cheers,
Adrian
-
I didn't think red would work but dashes of it break the colour scheme a little bit. The calipers were already red so I decided to keep the theme going. Cheers for the compliments though bud. The headlights are Hella Twin Projector headlights, I've now sold them though, I'm putting standard GTi headlights on this weekend.
You're looks a good base as well, some subtle and tasteful mods will make it look swish!
-
Bad times, the front has changed. Hella Twins have gone and I'm back to standard GTi headlights.

Lack of monies, the law on HIDs, a different approach to this car instead of following what I did with my old car, oh and to keep DH happy.

I'm not sure you can keep DH happy. You can make him less angry, but not happy

There is a nice one round my way that is the same colour as yours.. it's lights are all slightly smoked and it looks schweeeet!!!

Another option for smoking your headlights would be to get some tint film from LL

Yeah I never thought if that Dom. I'll have to have a word with him. As for the rear wiper, I wish to keep it as I like it. :)

Due to extreme (unprepared for) weather conditions, I decided to skid on ice at a downhill junction and hit a fence and mount the curb. The results are below, please bare in mind, my steering wheel was straight at the time of taking these pictures:

Excellent.
Had to wave through the interwebs for breakdown cover, RAC and AA were crap as they were focusing on their members, so new 'potential' members were sh!t out of luck. In the end I got Greenflag to come out, which fair play to them they were there within 20 minutes of me confirming my £95! call out charge. There is an upside though, I am now entitled to a years cover with them. :afro:
After being towed to a garage, the damage isn't as bad as I had assumed, new track rod is needed, and something else (can't remember, it's been a long day) and been told £95 so hopefully that will be that once it's done.
Didn't need this so close to my birthday and Christmas, was also due to drive to Southampton tomorrow but that isn't going to happen. Ah well.
-
Sorry to hear that mate, tis a shame.
Looks lucky though, what else was bent? Wishbone? Balljoint?
Could you not get a mate (Adam) to do it?
-
Not too bad a result in the end then.
-
Yeah worked out pretty well, could have been much much worse!
-
Yeah hopefully. Still a situation that I wish hadn't happened. I'm not driving in the snow again. :embarassed:

Glad to hear it's an easy fix

Glad the motor and more importantly you are ok mate.
Was hitting when similar happened to ne last year!
A least ya had yer sh!tter wheels on!!

Well it's common knowledge that if you tap one wheel it magically bends all four.
Fact.
Init.

The fact the sh!tter wheels were on was my one saving grace (and not having more damage), if I'd damaged the polished rimmage I would be absolutely livid!

Same pretty much happened to me  my lower arm's bent in half and my wheel sits two inches back now but can't be arsed to replace it :D

my wheels where hanging off either way like a see-saw :D
glad you didn't smash the tt comps ;) and hope you get it sorted!

They could of been standard GTI rimmage though, but that is to come, I have a set now thanks to Dom, but will get the track rod sorted first and then get them on. Standard looking GTI this winter FTW!
-
I found a reenactment of your accident. Its like crimewatch though, they couldnt use a car that looks exactly like yours for data protection, or the same location, and it 'may' not be 100% accurate which wheel was hit in the replay..

Bad luck bud, sh!t happens. Sounds like you got away with it tbh, £95 bill from a garage isn't bad.
Dec - pmsl at the link :D

Got the car back today. Tie rod replaced and tie rod end. Need to get a full geometry check done but should be all okay. :)

Nice one!!!

I wouldn't have been able to, my drive is very uneven. Otherwise I would have.

Glad you got it sorted Kirky boy! Just think it could have been a lot worse! Imagine while that was happening to you, your missus could have been on here grilling you and posting pictures of herself!
-
She can do what she wants.
It could of been worse as I should of hit the other Golf hard but somehow managed not to. So all round I'm happy.
-
Phew!... not too bad then.... could have been worse, you can never tell at first glance how bad it's going to be with things like this.... glad for you it wasn't anything too serious in the end.
-
I now have standard GTi rimmage on now to replace those 'chavtastic' wheels. Thanks to Dom for the painless and exciting sale of his ex-wheels.
I still need some centre caps but have bought some on eBay, will put them on when they arrive. I will also be lowering it more but that will probably be next week as this weekend I am driving far far up north (Lancashire) which is over 250 miles one way, I am going up with VRDan as he may not be in a VR for much longer. :lipsrsealed:

I still need some centre caps but have bought some on eBay, will put them on when they arrive. I will also be lowering it more but that will probably be next week as this weekend I am driving far far up north (Lancashire) which is over 250 miles one way, I am going up with VRDan as he may not be in a VR for much longer. :lipsrsealed:
No worries :afro:
Where abouts in lancashire you heading? That's almost my neck of the woods!
I'm not sure. I'll have to speak to Dan but I also think we are staying somewhere the night so....

I'm having serious doubts about my car. As much as I like it, now that I've had to move out and have little cash free at the end of each month, I can't warrant giving it a spray job. And because there are different shades of grey on it I don't feel motivated to make any other changes to it as it will be pointless.
MOT is due in April. Tax is due end of May. If it doesn't pass it's MOT for any reason I'll be getting rid of it and will be car-less until I can afford another. Unless someone wants to take it off my hands now. :lipsrsealed:

If it passes, spray it satin black then!

Look even better with your wheels on TBO.... as soon as the weather clears up you could get this done in no time for feck all just in time for summer and shows! do it and i'll park next to you! Mines only taken so long as I have been doing it in bits and lots of repair work to the body kit etc.
-
That looks sweet!
remember you can always use different colours, such as a satin grey or any colour you choose!
I say do it, or i'll slap you at the RR day!

Okay Wayne, you've made your point but I'm not taking your opinion on board. :afro:
I'm not sure what satin grey would look like on a Mk3 but I was thinking that if you change the colour of the car, surely I need to notify the DVLA? Unless I did it grey?

Yep, that's why i said satin grey!
-
I'm not sure on Matt black...
I liked the Matt red one from that video of the car being washed the other day.
NATO green is a bit rat look on mk3s.
Blue looks good though;

You'll fall back in love with it when the polished rims are back on. If it were me i'd wait until the rims are back on and take it from there; if your still not sure about the car then definately satin black it

That blue one does look very nice. I'm unsure if I would keep all the trim on mine though if it was black?
-
Matt/satin looks real nice
-
I reckon satin grey without the trim would look the nuts tbh.
-
that satin brown one looks the daddy, how sick are those arches.
-
Satin blue would look soo sweet with your polished rims.
That satin red is giving me ideas...
-
Satin grey with the trim OR gl bumpers without the textured strip Matt grey.
-
It's much more likely that I'm going to do this now. Love the feedback and help guys. Keep it coming.
That blue MK3 is VERY nice though, but might have to go grey for DVLA purposes.
-
Thank me later for my amazing idea Shady! I think it will look awesome, something different as well!

Roller the Matt paint on, it's so easy and cheap that if you don't like the colour you can change it without a headache. Another cool thing is touchups always look spot on!

No, no its not a good idea!!
I want this cars engine.

Kirk just drive the f*cking thing and enjoy it.
Your life around your car doesn't have to be this endless soap opera - an MOT's an MOT, if it needs work, short of welding then it just needs to be done and with the folks you know on here it *should* cost that much.
Caistor, I got the zinc blocks joke.
Anodes.
-
In other news the car is now lower by 3cm all round, wheels fill the arches nicely now. Will get pics later. Also sorter out the scraping noise which was the tie rod end, which was on the right hand side. Turns out there was a tie rod end for left hand side used on the right side. All good now though.
-
it would be sad for u to give up on it spady, i havent even done that with my rusty mk2 yet, ive merely been taking sabbatical on it
-
can add yours to the be scrapped list shody, that will be my 3rd one then
-
^ :D
-
I'm not scrapping it. If anything I'd sell it for the engine. But Dan you're right, I don't want to give up on it, I do need to get some seal work done though. Found out yesterday that they are a bit rusty. :embarassed:
-
Where / how bad is the rot pal?? (forgive me for not reading back over the whole thread)
noticed something about matt black, that would be a shame (IMO) - the grey ones are up their with the best colour
-
It's pretty bad. To the point that trying to jack it up at certain points reveals a lot of rust. I had to jack it up from the front corner where the seal joins the arch.
Ideally a respray in the same colour is what I'd want but I just don't have the money for that kind if thing at the moment, with the way the paint is now I don't feel great about doing anyhing to the car, however if I satin grey it it will be one colour all over which will look better than it is now. Then when I can afford a proper respray I can get it done, but that won't be for some time sadly.
-
I can totally understand how you feel RE the paint finish, kind of makes you loose the love for it ! iv been in that place before too.. gotta try see past it tho if you can.
As for the rot on the Sills? not too much hassle for someone to weld those up (or even fit new ones), i dont even jack mine up on these parts, i use the rear beam for the back, and a similar part on the front - hard to explain, id have to get you a picture.
I do have to drive onto a gradual step of bits of wood to get my car high enough to get the jack under tho as the bit i put my jack on at the front is the lowest part under the car almost. (this sounds like jibberish i know lol)
But it saves on any damage to the rust proofing on the underbody of the car which can then lead to rot down the line.. once you get yours sorted id follow this way too, ill try get u a pic
in the mean time try stay positive
-
I also try to avoid jacking mine up using the jacking points, mine were pretty mangled when I bought the car (especially the fronts), but there's no real sign of rot on them yet. I did notice a fair amount of bubbling around the rubber bung thats under the front seats, looks like I might some welding there sometime this year
I also know exactly what you mean about the paintwork, when mine was like this last year I felt pretty crap about the car:
-
Thanks for the input Kells. I think I'll try those jacking points in the future though.
Regarding the paint, I've been looking into it a lot and I think it will look pretty sweet, at less for a stop gap until it is painted properly. Satin grey with polished wheels will look the shizzle.
-
Here's how she was after getting standard rimmage:

-
Be ashame to sell up shady just stick with it and save a few quid when you can for some paint I think keep it the grey it is as its a nice colour. As for the welding rot etc every mk3 ive owned has had some form of rust on the sills mainly through pratts jacking them up with a trolly jack which is the start of the damage and rust.Stick with it the love will come back
-

And what about my input Shoddy
It's looking pretty good in that last pic, pretty flipping low anyway! The only thing your missing is joey modded headlights, cheap to do and big impact
-
Also why not spray that panel yourself? It's a surrounded by trim on 3 sides so a non-perfect colour match won't be immediately noticeable, even with no painting experience I sprayed that same panel on both sides of my car. Just flat it back, primer it and let loose with the rattle cans, the way I see it is that you've got nothing to loose really
At worst it will still be a better colour match than it is now, which will draw less attention to it!
-
Sorry Dom, thank you too. it is pretty low now, I'm going to keep it as it is until I get my polished rims back on, see how she sits then (16s). I like it as it is now though.
Blu, I hear what you're saying but I can always get it done properly when the time comes, but satin grey is on the cards after April. And Dom, the drivers side is an easy enough fix, it's the passenger side which is depressing, I'll get a pic later.
-
no probs buddie, ill do my best to get u a pic of the points wher ei jack up - it will deffo save on any damage to your sills etc
As dom says can you not pain the lower half yourself ?? Y'know what if you was local id give it a go for you as iv now got a rotary polisher too..
the satin could work tho on the poloshed rims, just dont do the inner doors etc, then if you go back grey it will be a lot easier and cost you less too
P.S Just seen your last post RE other side of car, i hear you now

Meh, bring the car up north Shady, Leeds isn't that far from me! We'll have a 'fix shady's car' day
-
Lol! Thanks guys but don't see that happening. I'd need a full respray as nothing matches. You'll are what I mean soon, there are about 4 different shades of grey on the car right now. :undecided:
I also need to find somewhere to fit my rear windscreen into the spare bootlid I've got, my current one is rusted to crap. Horrible to say the least.
-
Do you know if said panels have been re finished at some point ? coz if so it might be cheaper to find panels off a broken car ?
I know its still money needed to purchase the parts but they do go for nothing, thats if you can find one in your colour, i know i could never find one in flat black lol!
re rear screen , most glass places can do it mate, should not cost you much, real shame you are not local as my mates bodyshop uses a guy and he charges £10 to remove and replace bonded glass
-
If the sills are rusty, you would be better to mot it 1st and see how bad they are, pointless tidying it then finding it needs shedloads of welding.
-
Looks pretty good on the standard GTI wheels tbh
-
Kells it might even be cheaper for me just to make the journey. I nee to look around. Autoglasd wanted £130!!!!
Wayne, I will get a friend to look it over before MOT time and then see about getting it sorted. It definitely needs work though.
Thanks Jimp, for winter wheels it does look quite good. :afro:
-
Shady for the rear screen try: http://steveswindscreens.co.uk/default.aspx based in Martock but they do a mobile service.
-
mate, seriously if u want owt doing i can sort it, even paint work as my mate owns the bodyshop - one of my best mates at that, and he is good
This is his garage, proper stuff not a back street crap place etc, had my arches rolled and pulled here, and the car on the left is jonnypolish's off here, he had his arches done too and coilovers fitted, he drove up from London

I believe the door is the original shade as it is the same as the rear quarter and back. Then the other half and the front are darker.

-
Or back to black?
Yeah i can wait until Monday, I'll still be going to the scrappy though as I need some bits. :) Cheers mate.
You see my awful paintwork pick a page or two ago? 3 shades on one side.
-
Yeah, ya need to satin grey it!!!
Would help ya but your a good way away!!
Don't work on the spoilers mate, it's a weird plastic, only thing that works is linseed oil!!
Will give it a go over and check there are nuts all there and it's yours fella!
-
Fair enough. Linseed oil it is. I'll use it on the rest of my trim as well then. Haha!
Satin grey is on the cards, mind you, I'm going to have to sort some rust spots out that are around the card, especially under the trim of the arches. I for some reason am really just wanting the MOT to be done so I can get on with it all now.
If I MOTd now do I still get the remaining 3 months I've left currently?
-
Don't think so fella!!
Ya can sort that mate. Rub it down, job done!!
-
Think you can get it done slightly before but there is a limit, maybe one or two months. I had mine done a month before and they backdated it so that I had 13 months!
-
Thanks snifferdog, that sounds more like what will be the case. I want to get it in asap to see what's wrong with it and then depending on cost, get it sorted, then crack on with rust repair and satining.
-
I know what you mean mate, I waited until Id put mine through an mot myself before I really started doing anything to it.
-
Sorry, yeah, one month before exp date :)
-
If you haven't sprayed it by Volksfest we'll get everyone to bring a can and give you a hand
Only trouble is you'll probably end up with more mis-matching panels then you currently have
-
Not sure I like the sound of that. I'll make sure it's sorted before Volksfest, I'll take a week off of work to do it.
-
Are you gonna take bits off to do, ike the grill for example and remove lights etc? or just gonna mask it all up and go for it ?
Its the masking up that takes bloody ages lol
Get loads of pics when your doing it
-
I'm going to take lights and grill off etc., as there are nooks and crannies to get to that would be noticeable if I don't. However I'll be keeping inner door seals and what not the same for when a proper respray is done.
I'll be sure to get pics as I go along. :)
-
Better to take the arches, bumpers, door handles, top of the skirts etc off as well, will be a much neater job if you do.
-
Are you rolling or spraying?
-
Are you rolling or spraying?
Rolling, had a little PM sesh with Dmonday and looks like that'll be the best way.
-
This is gonna look really good when it's done.
Way better than the monochrome harlequin.
-

I hope so. A nice darkish grey would be a nice finish. I need to do some rust removal first though, I wouldn't be painting it until April/May time, but ideally want to get the rust sorted asap.
-
Nice to hear your rolling. Was going to do that before I opted for the respray (I kinda wish I had rolled now and done it all myself, but oh well)
Hope to see you at JKM mate :)
-
I should be coming to JKM Sir Alex. Won't be in my whip though. Rust repair is my major thing at the moment. Along with MOT middle of March.

Cool. Missed you

I'm hopefully going to get it into my mates garage this weekend as I want to lower it another cm, and have the front end a tad lower than the back to give it more stance (currently it's sitting straight). I also have a noise coming from the rear which I'm guessing is the exhaust knocking against the rear axle, want that sorted too.
Along with changing the blue LEDs to green ones in my clocks and potentially getting a GTi spoiler, this weekend is going to be pretty busy.
-
Sounds good. I especially like the lowering bit.
Exhaust knock ftl, ITS REALLY ANNOYING.

Yep, I have played with it a few times, but after lowering the car more I just give up. Got more important things to do on the car when I got time.
-
Well isn't this just crap!
Some pikey smashed my windscreen so now forking out £70 to get that sorted. Not to mention Admiral won't cover my car for being lowered than 50mm so the recent dropping I've just done has to be reversed asap.
On the plus side at least I changed my blue dials to green ones.
-
Woops lol
They wont notice another cm will they?
I wouldn't have told em, let's face it, who measures exactly.

No I mean from the lowers height I had it (40-50mm?). So I'm going to have to wind them up now. :(
-
Ooo shiny shiny. New windscreen was put in today. Very quick turnaround which I'm very pleased with. Just gotta hope it doesn't happen again. Also dials are now back to green.
-
Why?
-
Assholes mate. Same happened to my mk3. Did it go all the way through or stay in one piece? Only the rear of mine went right through..

It does suck that you can't anything nice at all without some tosspot being a jealous git about it. Guess that's the way it is though.
I've got so many things I want to do now but I don't want to do any of it until I get this MOT sorted.

Can't remember what you said on Sunday, you bringing this to JKM?

Couldn't hear me through all the hair?
I imagine I will be bringing it down as I think Chelsea is coming with me, and the 3 of us won't fit in Dan's Caddy.

Not that, I have a bad selective hearing problem :D
Yeah thought how are you going get you in the caddy lol, I really want a caddy after seeing Dan's and that matt black one :(
-
Chelsea could go in the back? Mind you, without the tailgate there she may struggle to stay in there. That matte one is of a similar style to how I want to do mine, just in grey. Hopefully if it all goes to plan it'll look sweet.
Wait until you see it now though, looks crap. LOL! I managed to find that oval indicator driver's side wing I had (the one like yours). Try keeping an eye out for a passenger side one with oval indicators for me?

I make her sit in the back when it's just me and her in my car.
Cheers babe.

Car is now back to how it was, might even be a tad higher. Thanks Admiral. :afro: Mr. H, if you read this, sod off and don't reply, I know you're just trying to save me from myself.

Took these off of VRDan's VR (as I couldn't be bothered to do them myself ). I really like them, not as hardcore tinted as Dom's but these work well with the fogs and indicators I have. Car could really do with a clean but I really can not be arsed.

Should look ace in satin with the polished wheels.

If you're going to make jokes like that then leave my thread.
I'm in need of a passenger front wing with oval indicator to replace the current one. Does anyone know one going cheap? Rust free?
Also can I use a non-GTi wing and whack the GTi trim on top or do they need to be specific?
-

All the same, if not ready drilled which most are it is easy enough to drill the holes needed for the arch extension.
-
Okay good. I just need to find a rust free one then. Doesn't matter what colour as I'll be sanding it down and greying it up anyway.

If you're going to replace a wing and wack some primer on it for the time being, note that primer isn't waterproof.

I wouldn't run it on the car, parts like that will be done in shelter then put on when the rolling happens. :)

Cool.... whats you're dead line for the big paint job.. Once i'm MOT'd i'm going to try and have a mad bash on the rest of the car in march in time for some showness, and hope she gets a warm welcome.

I'm aiming for Volksfest but I'd really like it fine April/May. We will see, hopefully it gets a warm reception, much like your anticipation.

the wonders of sill covers
-
have you been tempted to poke a whole in it with ur finger yet?

Dubsport, I did get tempted but chose to choose the right path and let it rot further on it's own. Thankfully this should all be sorted by the end of the month, along with a satin paint job. Here's hoping....

Will not be easy or cheap to repair that is for sure.

I had a similar problem with mine, I cut all the rot and rust out with a grinder then fabricated a sill from sheet metal and got it welded in, that was cheap enough to be honest

True that.. to be honest I have known people who get repair pieces and a garage to weld them up and as Wayne says, it can cost a bomb!.... when my others half ford got pretty bad, a man we know cuts his own stuff to fit and and can do a job like that only costing double figures!
does depend how much more there is though.
-

Respect that Kirk, however cutting and welding the flat section is not the hard part, your looking at major fabrication and welding on the lower part plus when you look at how much metal you well need to cut back to see sound metal = major work.
I only hope your not thinking of bodging it.
The other question is with the electrical problems as well is it worth repairing.
-
I have a friend that welds for a living, and has been welding cars for quite some time. He had a look at it today, and the first thing he did was laugh, but at the same time he said it'll be easy enough, the sills will be replaced entirely, not just filled in. Old sills out, new sills in. Also before the paint job commences and other bits of rust will be sorted also in the fashion of cut out and weld in fresh metal.
Car will be off the road from the time it gets welding treatment until it is finished with new paint.
-
after bodging about with my mk1 sills for someone who can weld its an easy job to do

Shep, are you going to keep up with your welding?
Kirk, when was your last MOT? surprised it hasn't failed before now.

June last year. It would appear the previous owner covered the sills in some black crap to 'cover up' the rust, the extent of the damage is worse but couldn't get pictures (couldn't be arsed ).
It'll all get fixed, I want it all sorted by the end of the month, should be good, stick the polished wheels back on as well and have some ballin' ass driving going on for the summer.
-
satin paint job ftw!!! :afro:
-
Whoever it was must have done a good cover up job although most MOT bods usually see this as more of an invite for a poke around with a screwdriver!
Ah well, you've found it, you're dealing with it and soon it will be all good and you can crack on with painting your car so it compliments mine!
-

It will or did pass the mot due to the sill covers, mot testers are not allowed to remove them so cannot check what the state of them is underneath.
-
Good, most garages would probably lose the side skirts if they took them off :D
-

I only found out when I mot'd mine and it was one of the advisory items unable to check sills due to covers fitted.
Glad I removed mine in the end as they are a water trap.
-
bloody hell shady, did ya not check that ;D
i cant say sh!t though, mine was worse, involved jacking points and a lot of flooring lol!
cost me around the £500 mark by the time he came to decent metal :D
-
I had to do the same with mine, bought it knowing i had to rebuilod the jacking point.. Started stripping the underseal away with a wire brush in my grinder onlyu to go through lots of metal with it, so i ended up doing:
Rebuilding jacking point
Replacing the entire sill
Replacing the 3/4 floor pan
I then had a piggle the other side and ended up doing:
Rebuilding the jacking point
Replaced 1/2 the sill
Replaced the entire floorpan
Plated over to bung holes
Then one of the arch trims wasnt stuck on quiet right so pulled iut off to find that i needed to repolace an arch...
all in all with the the rear arch, two sills and some shaped floor pan tin, a litre of underseal and some seam seal i think it all cost me £100ish IIRC
My uncle started me off and showed me how to do it, i then did the rest myself so no labour costs..
Good luck on getting it fixed up Shady
-
fook me, it amazes me how rotten mk3's can get!
no more boat jokes as clearly a MK3 wouldn't be safe at sea!

Yea it sounds like a lot, but when you get down to it it doesnt seem so bad. because if your replacing the sill it you have to weld it to the lfloor pan anyway etc..
Probably took me 3-4 afternoon/nights to do it all. Maybe did over do it a little but atleast i know itll be ok for another couple of years!
-
New sills ordered. Hopefully will be sorted next weekend.

Hadn't seen this for a while.

Volksfest is my deadline. As soon as I have the sills sorted I'm going to get my bootlid replaced (replacement I have but need the window transferred to the new one). Once that's done I'll be sanding it down and cracking on. The end of April may even see the prep beginning.

It's okay, buddy. I'll stick with the current one for now until I get the paint sorted, I'd want to keep the spoiler unpainted though to tie in with the rest of the trim on the car.

No worries mate!
I thought the same but the mrs convinced me to but the cc one, looks so much better!!
It's here free if ya change ya mind though!! ;)

Already booked in with my friend for Friday, early start, stripping the whole interior out to fix any other problems. Can't wait to get the ball rolling, once it's a safer car to drive, I'll fix anything needed from the MOT (if needed) then I'll be a lot happier.
-
Then you can get on with the satin and give the valver the win it deserves!

I guess it's not such a bargain now, is it..

Yes, this is true. As for the bargain, I still think it was a good buy, the welding would no doubt have needed to be done, it's just a good job I know certain people that vary in their professions.
Once the welding is done, and the paint sorted, I can't wait to roll it out for the summer days.

Gonna be sweeeet.

Why the hell aren't you bumping uglies!?
[/quote]
No I'm getting married sunday and going on honeyoon on tuesday! I may pop onto the forum once or twice whilst over there though! I'm an addict now, what do you expect!
-
Has'nt this been painted yet!?
-
All in good time. I'm adding another shade of grey on Friday thanks to the bootlid. Paint will happen, I'm settling for a gun metal grey me thinks, not too dark but not too light as to make it appear like it's primer.

You going to edition38 bud?

You going to edition38 bud?
Doubt it, but we will see nearer the time. It's quite a trek for me. :undecided:

So let me begin with, I'm lucky to be alive!
Today I took the valver to my friend's to get some major welding work done. I will let the pictures do the talking first:

So here's the deal. I'm scrapping it.
There is FAR too much welding work required to get this sorted. The outer silll came off no problem! The inner sill literally disintegrated when touching it. The driver's side floor started giving way as the rust was so bad that you could see the ground from inside the car!
We didn't even bother with the passenger side as that was worse than the driver's side. Each side was completely f**ked, and whoever had it beforemade a huge bodge job of it and covered it up with silicone and patched panels.
So now I'm car-less. Looks like I have no luck with MK3s.

Balls

Nope, got no spare money at the moment. Will have to wait for something, probably after I have started my new job.

Yup, it's really bad. I had noticed that throwing it into corners wasn't great as it didn't feel 100% stable. So I was waiting to get things welded but didn't realise how bad it was. So yes, I was driving like a granny.
I'd love a Bora, but I don't have that kind of money.
-
Yoikes! That is proper rotten. You gonna break it for parts? You'll get a few quid for the engine, they seem to go for about £250 to the hungry MKII lot.
Nick
-
I will be honest and say that I guessed it was too far gone.
But breaking it will / should see you some good money
-
Sorry to hear shady mate!!
Hope your selling your wheels an extras to gain some dosh!
3rd time lucky bud!!

I'm keeping my wheels, I love them haha! It's a shame about the car but I've already sold the engine. :)

So... If you're keeping the wheels... This must mean you're getting another Mk3?

bad new shady sorry to hear that.
Cheers man. It was really quite shocking seeing the rust there was under the outer sill. Much worse in person. Had a whole tesco bag full of the rust that just simply fell off.
-
I'm really worried about mine now. :undecided: Was gonna have a look at mine but I dont really wanna know if they are that bad! May just leave it a little while longer and see if I fall through the floor!

Well at least your doing the right thing by scrapping it rather than trying to bodge it up again
-
I wouldn't have it bodged anyway as I could sell it on to someone knowing it was that bad. It could be fixed with a lot of time, effort and money but it's just not worth it.
-
U getting another mk3 then?
