Title: This is my deformed Rear Bumper. The Good News+Nearly done+Undone+NOW DONE!
Post by: am1w on 18 August 2010, 19:02
Sorry to continue with this, but I thought you might be interested to see how bad the deformation is around the number plate area.

That's not good Asker.

Apart from that though it's a fine looking example of a GTI

I'll have a look at mine when I've shifted all the junk I've blocked the car in with.

Ten letters and ten pictures to Supplying Dealer VW Inchcape Telford, the Warranty Manager at VW Inchcape West London and the bodyshop ARC in Park Royal, London in the last 2 days. Snoopy's pictures have also been provided. He has been a great help. Thanks Snoops.
The bodyshop's indecision as to what has caused this has led to this whole saga. The guy I normally deal with was on holiday.
Inchcape London have now passed this on to VW Technical.
The Warranty Manager has been confused by the bodyshop initially saying it could be due to the process of attaching the numberplate or the result of an accident. Now the bodyshop might be changing their story and feel it is a moulding problem.
The Warranty Manager has decided not to make a decision for it to be a warranty issue as she is now obviously a bit confused and has referred the matter to VW Technical.
I am therefore stuck in the middle of this process.
Totally peeved off to say the least.

However I see it now. That is shocking. Its as if the paint hasn't bonded to the plastic and is just floating there.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

The car was delivered to me in London from Telford. I did notice it but thought it would so on all other cars bring of very flimsy plastic.

I`d say its had a bump before you received it mate.

That's quite bad am1w, must be a manufacturing fault, I don't see how that could happen just fitting a number plate. Hope you get it sorted, if it was mine I'd insist on a new bumper.
By the way, off topic, is that your real number plate on your sig? [Never seen a reg with 2 letters 1 number then another letter]
Title: Re: This is how deformed my rear bumper is!
Post by: FroGTI on 19 August 2010, 09:03
Could it just be that the number plate has been put on wrongly, deforming the plastic? No excuse, mind...
Title: Re: This is how deformed my rear bumper is!
Post by: ajmoir36 on 19 August 2010, 09:28
Does it revert back to normal if you take the number plate off, if so, buy and new number plate and locate the screws in new holes and do it yourself.  Otherwise buy a new plate and stick in on without number plate screws.
Title: Re: This is how deformed my rear bumper is!
Post by: am1w on 19 August 2010, 10:51
Ricks and Danski: No have not been driven into and Snoops has a similar problem though mine is worse.

Froggy and Ajmoir: Done all that with the numberplate. Flat as a pancake behind it. Looks like a moulding problem. Snoops has a similar problem though mine is more unsightly.

Pretty upset with this at present. VW and the bodyshop cannot decide how this has happened and I am caught in the middle.

I'll have the answer today as to whether it is covered by warranty.

Got an e-mail from the Warranty Manager of VW Inchcape West London to say that VW Technical say the bumper deformation is standard on all GTi cars! Hence she can go no further as it is not a Warranty Issue. She asked me to get in touch with VW Customer Services giving me their phone number which was the wrong number! How very competent.

She was not at work all day but managed to send me a terse e-mail at 5 pm which is when she goes home. The bodyshop could not speak to her all day either! It seems that they tried to speak to each other 3 or 4 times yesterday but kept missing each other! How convenient.

I told the person at VW Customer Services exactly what I thought of the people I have dealt with so far and that I was willing to take this matter very much further. He agreed that it was pretty obvious that the matter had been grossly mishandled and should never have come to this. I have been given a case number and they are going to investigate further.

I am pretty furious at the total incompetence of these people. I have made it abundantly clear that I am not going to be fobbed off that easily.

Rant over.

It can't get worse than it is.

He only applies very gentle heat. Slightly hotter than the sun on plastic.

I have seen this guy's work and seen him work on deformed plastic bumpers and it is surprising what excellent results he can obtain.

But thanks for the advice.

He said that the deformation is bad and has been there from date of production.
Doubtful if heat tretment would help as it is permanently deformed.
Best for VW to attend to it and remedy it.

After numerous e-mails, got a phone call from the VWCS case manager.

It seems she cannot authorise a warranty repair as the supplying dealer, VW Telford has told her that all the GTis they supply have distorted bumpers! This is after I sent VW Telford, VW West London and VWCS enough pictures comparing my wonkey bumper in to 17 perfect ones.

She did not even bother to call the bodyshop for their input! I asked her if VW Telford had sent her pictures of all the distorted bumpers on their GTis. She said 'no' and could not discuss the matter any further.

She knew I would not be happy with this result, so she has referred the matter to the 'escalation team'.

VW and their dealers are quite disgraceful IMO.

I think I will end up going to Watchdog etc. (Esther Rantzen is known to me. Her father used to be a patient of mine! Don't know if she still does the programme).

I don't think VW really care. But I am more than willing to provide them and VW Inchcape Telford with appropriate publicity!

Mate, just read this thread and feel for you. The treatment you've had is rubbish.

Maybe i've missed it but if VW telford sold the car and claim "all" GTIs come with it, have you gone up and had a look at all of their GTIs?

I must admit it can be all consuming and really upsetting. Yours, in total sympathy, A.

I was thinking that all Mk6 GTi owners should check their rear bumpers and if they find a deformation in the numberplate area should put in a warranty claim.

Can I make a suggestion?

Cos I have been following this rather curious deal that you have - If all lower rear bumpers are distorted as you have been told, then if you ordered one from the spares department it too would be distorted............. see where I am going here?

The best bit is that when you see that the new one that rocks up is not distorted as I suspect will be the case..... Your dealership now has one in stock so that it can be swapped over with your wonky one with no lame excuses of "still waiting on the parts sir"

Good Luck   Dave

Maybe I've picked this up wrong but wouldn't ordering a bumper come without paint and as such prove nothing?
I've always thought AM1W's bumper appeared as if the paint in those areas hadn't adhered properly to the bumper giving the effect of the ripple?
Title: Re: This is how deformed my rear bumper is!
Post by: am1w on 10 September 2010, 19:09
First of all, the dealership did not tell VW that all GTi bumpers were deformed. VW basically lied to me! VW Inchcape, Telford were not pleased with this distortion of the truth. They are now dealing with the 'Escalation Team' at VW.

I have written a letter of complaint to Chris Craft, MD VW cars, and to the General Manager of VW Inchcape, Telford. I await their reply. I have made it very clear to all the concerned parties that I am more than willing to take this matter very much further and will gladly provide VW with as much bad publicity as possible.

Secondly, you can feel the deformation of the bumper in the numberplate area. Nothing to do with paint adherence or ripples. It is a moulding fault.

Hope this has cleared a few things.

Hope this has cleared a few things.

re the moulding - hence my suggestion to get them to order a replacement, only trying to help!!

Cheers

Cannot order or do anything until VW approve Warranty Repairs. The Bodyshop won't order the part until this approval is obtained.

So at present I am stuck.

Thank you Dustybones your help. Most appreciated.

I think what he ment was get them to order a bumber then turn round and say well thats not deformed fit it under warrenty!
But the problem is that for unusual parts, you may find which is the case with most dealer parts department now as alot of stuff they simply cannot send back, , is that you have to pay upfront as they don't want you to not turn up for it. So this suggestion i think he was talking about would not work.

I went down that route. They cannot return the part for a full refund. 20% loss. Then I'd have to pay for the bumper (if it seems ok & we would only know this once paint is applied) whilst it sits in the bodyshop. Gets messy and I have enough problems without adding this one.
Thanks anyway.

I'm not with you here! If its a moulding fault like you stated and nothing to do with paint not adhering to it, why would you only know once the paint has been applied? You would surely see the fault without the paint?!?

I'm with dustybones on this. Get them to order it and if it is faulty, reject it there and then. If not, you have your proof.
Will your dealer insist you pay upfront? I know mine doesn't.

As I have already mentioned, it cannot be ordered, it cannot be done as I will have to pay upfront. I will therefore have to wait for the Warranty Claim to be processed for which VW are giving me endless trouble.

It is a moulding fault, Warranty Manager says so, Bodyshop says so, VW says the moulding fault is standard on all GTis. Hence the whole saga.

You're going to love this!

Well, I had a call from the Warranty Manager who said they are going to fit the painted bumper in their workshop!

So the bumper arrived at VW West London today, then was sent to the body shop for painting today and is to be fitted at the workshop next Wednesday which means that the body shop has to send the painted bumper back to them. For this to happen they would have to give me a courtesy car for a whole day!

Rang the VW Escalation Team in fury and told them that this was ridiculous and they agreed! They are paying for the fitment of the bumper and it does not matter who does it!
The body shop will fit it while I wait and this will take them about 45 mins. This is what I wanted and what I got!

However, the person at the Escalation Team thought the paintwork of the bumper would have to be blended in. Then she gets back to me 15 mins later and says that Technical say this this need not be done as there will always be a slight difference in colour between metal and plastic.

I have made it very clear that I will only let the bodyshop fit and paint the bumper and this is final.  If they gave me any more trouble, I was going to write a further letter to Chris Craft , MD VW.

They caved in immediately!

Just had my rear bumper re-sprayed from RMB Auto in yarm under warranty, done a really good job apart from a slightly lighter shade of white.

Was told it's very difficult to re-spray plastics and get them a spot on match.

When I had my front bumper re-sprayed due to a prang, they blended-in the wings.

Cheers AMW1

It took so long because the week before it was due to be re-sprayed VW closed it's bodyshop in Northallerton so had to go thru all the hassle again. It took them nearly two months to find a new VW approved bodyshop and then i had to get it approved again (pictures, inspection etc etc).

Very Very frustrating to be honest.

Sunday: I know, I know. Such an unpleasant experience. They make one jump through hoops hoping the 'customer' (that word is a joke for Vankwagen) will get fed up and give up.

Just look at Snoopy's case. Really horrible. We've had it easy in comparison.

Never want to deal with this awful company ever again. Unfortunately, I might have to as I've just bought the car 6 months ago. I wish I had got a Mercedes C Class. A class act.

The saga continues!

Went to collect the car with the new rear bumper. Bumper is perfect, paint finish excellent but it needs to be blended-in as it is a couple of shades different from the quarter panels etc.

The bodyshop had advised VW that the blending-in process was essential (especially necessary with Red and Silver cars). But they are so penny-pinching that they would not sanction this.

I have therefore left the car at the bodyshop and instructed them to do my bidding. I will not collect the car until this has been acheived. The bodyshop will comply on Monday. I have also written to the Escalation Team at VW and have told them, in no uncertain terms, that this whole saga has been really extremely upsetting, time consuming and in the final analysis not commensurate with good customer care.

Nearly there!

And I don't think I will buy a VW again.

You are so right. They thought I would not notice.
The bodyshop told them this was not acceptable a number of times but to no avail.
VW have paid the bodyshop approx £40 for the paint and £60 for labour. Saw the costs!

You've not exactly been involved in any major incidents but have both your front and rear repainted. Maybe you should check your doors for any imperfections and get the paint joined up at least

It's like: One is on an operating table, one wakes up from the sedation, one's stomach is wide open and one wants to be transferred to another hospital and see another surgeon.
A bit dramatic, but you get my drift.

What's up with it?
Are they painting it for a 5th time or is it just the alignment that's not right?

Painting it for the 5th time (probably mainly around the edges) and blending-in with the quarter panels.
Also, painting offside edge of front bumper as the paint came off due to a touch-up by them and for it not being baked.
I am driving a Polo for 3-4 days. Loverly.

Is this 5 times with the same bodyshop?
I'd be going off my head by now. How many attempts are you going to allow them to fix it?
You must have plenty of patience.

Yeah, with the same VW approved bodyshop.
I have nearly lost the will to live.
They won't get paid by VW if the job is not done to my satisfaction!

All fixed perfectly. In fact, both bumpers better than new.
Delighted.
The end!

Just to make you all completely sick of this thread: the paint on a tiny part of the front bumper offside edge has not been applied perfectly. A bit of black undercoat can be seen if examined very carefully.
Not worth taking back.

Never polished the car. It's the Toughseal that enables the shine to develop so beautifully.
Redone with toughseal since it was painted ?
