not a masssive update, more a preliminary one of things to come..
So this week, I'm finally going to fix the carburettor up, trial the new inlet, fit the new alternaotr and some new powdercoated bits.. and sort out that weeping head gasket!
So the slam panels been blasted, the headlight frames and the air filter lid have been done, waiting for the rocker to be done along with the euro inlet manifold..
So the ehadgasket, apparently causes a common leak on the small blocks, this relates back to the age odl problem of the breather system blocking up. In this case, it has gone that oens tep further that it can, and started seeping past the gasket. now this doesnt mean tis in anyway gone or detrimental to the running, or that the heads warped as if tis been overheated, its just the seals shot on the gasket for the main oil gallery as pictured..

So, it's from ehre that it's been seeping out, which also means oil could have got through to the dizzy, so a new seal on that, out the end of the cam seal, new seal, any place where oil is, and it could find a way out could have done.. a new head set should fix that. As I'm takign the ehad off this is what I'vve bought, an Elring TQ OE one.. and am going to get the stem seals done, the head flatness checked, the head dipped and cleaned and the valves and seats re ground and lapped

Here's the other seals I got, randomly theres an extra green distributor seal that makes no sense?

Brand new set of head bolts

and an oil pump block gasket. I'm tempted to replace this one and whip the sump off to clean up the oil pump and change the crank seal with a little more ease. Seems sensible while everything esle is apart, and I have got a new sump that's ready to be refitted.

Also decided while I'm at it I'd need fresh water and coolant so stocked up, a new oil filter seems sensible and new pedal covers as mine are wearing a bit thin now..

On thursday I also decided I would open up my carburettor just quickly - at least, remove the jet assemblies and chekc the numbers on them to confirm what was there. Turned out that the second stage was missing it's main jet, now I know why the car bogs down a bit after 50 and takes ages to mvoe around speeds sometimes, due to its non calibrated fuelling!
So I ordered everything from weber which arrived yesterday, I was hoping i could use the one new main jet to test the car to see what response difference it made, and altohugh the new jet i was in need of most, was on the invoice, it wasnt ni the box! Coincidental, doh!
So, new bits for the carb include a new top plate, webers own retaining palte which actually lines up with the carb, rather than the rear screw being offset.. and a load of other bits and pieces..

The new top plate now has studs in instead, so I'm not bolting into the soft cast ally which is used and ruining the threads, causing it to be held in by only one bolt very insecurely, as it is now.. also matched here with the new retainer which should help tighten up the vacuum required.
Also picked up all new jets and everything, was gonig to go the whoel hog with the emulsion tubes but at around £10 a piece and jets noly being around £2, and being told tubes dont really wear at all, i decided against those. but instead went with an uprated pump jet going from 40 to 45 to help with the fuelling on the larger manifold.

also bought a proper weber service kit complete with sandwich plate, main gasket, needle valve and seat, vac diaphraghm and all the other gubbins like mixture screw and seals to recondition the lot

And then organised everything ready to fit..
Thought it would make lfie easier anyway! bought 4 new screws for the alternator as well to swap out the rusty ones, and also have 4 instead of 3 holding the thing together. Also need to touch in the bit of sivler where some of the very thin casing snapped off. Other jobs now include tidying up the wiring giving it all tis best routing, have the bushings to redo the starter with, waiting no the actual repair kit at the moment though hopefully thatll come monday or tuesday.. if not im a bit stuffed as to doing that that i aimed to do. Got myself a new water pump seal as well as thatll be needed to release the cam belt tension.. can't really think of anything else at the moment, gonig to give the bay a good scrubbing and clean as it's in dire need. maybe clean up some of the block and GB but might wait on that for now.. as long as the most visible stuff is tidy ill be happy..
Just gotta wait till wednesday and get started now
