Hi there, im new to the forum and thought i would post a few pictures of my project car, hopefully im posting this in the correct place. :)
Got this car given to me from my parents and the only money i have put into it so far is new rear wheel bearings, so its a bit of a result. Ok so the car isnt that great, the body is pretty sound, but i am having a few problems with my idle, made a post about it here...... http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=187176.0
If anyone can help i would appriciate it
So here is a photo of it after a good clean
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/26533_376229836697_790281697_3536725_5598353_n.jpg)

As you can see, i have done the bonnet mod and i had to change the rear tailgate as the old one was rather rusty, im planning on doing the swiss cheese mod, the joey mod and change the dash board lights within the next few weeks.
But the main issue i need to fix atm is the idle, so if you have any ideas even just common idling faults please do post them so i can try them out as i have the next couple of days of work :)
Any comments/suggestions/help is welcomed
Cheers Alan

Welcome mate... Just posted my 10 pence worth in your problem thread... car looks pretty solid, can't complain for what you've paid for it!
-
Yeah i cant complain really and i posted in the problem thread as i fixed it this morning
Did a bit of work to it today i have work now but i will post the photos up of what i did when i get home
Thank you for the welcome :)
Alan

Shell looks really good!
Some nice wheels, bit of a drop and a red tailgate and that'll look excellent! :afro:

Yeah the shell is nearly perfect, planning on sorting out colours soon, but i have loads of ideas that are above the look of it aha ;D
So today i was a bit busy after finally getting it to idle i thought i would take some photos to remember what it used to look like before i put the work into it
So first of i swiss cheesed my airbox, and found some piping to use as my cold air feed.
On the second photo as you can see i have left the pipes inside should i dremel them out? or will they not make much of a difference?
Well now it is running and the only issue i know of is a small leak in the exhaust i thought i would start cleaning up the engine bay
This is what it currently looks like
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00012-20110323-1118.jpg)
As you can see it has seen better days so im thinking i might take the cover of tomorrow rub it down and spray it matt black
Started it today but i ran out of time and im going to take it off tomorrow as it will make life so much easier.
Also going to attempt to find all the earth points to clean them up, as suggested by Khare.
Is there any other little jobs that dont cost money but could need regular attention? As im fairly new to cars
Any advice and suggestions would be great
Thanks Alan
-
Good job on the airbox, looks great.
My advice however would have been to get the bottom of an 8v box (hasn't got the hot air pipe inlet) and do what you did to it. But as you've now done it already then close off the hot air inlet somehow and smooth the top half of the box.
Here's inspiration for you

Looks messy, but it's effective and in real life it doesn't look as messy.
I'd get rid of the hot air pipe as well, does nothing apart from let hot air into the system.
-
Nice little base car,
you have to love the sound of a drilled air box when giving it full beans
-
Nice! i picked that bottom half of the airbox up from my local scrappy got it for £2 it was the only golf they had, so i thought just to mess about with id buy it :)
Khare........on the top photo you posted the inlet you have there is that where yur cold air feed goes in or just left open? dunno weather to put the cold feed into the pipe i have or just place it in the hole iv cut out?
Also doing this to my 1.4 will i have any tuning issues or what not? as i know more cold air increases power so do i need to re tune it?
Yeah i shall remove the hot air pipe when i fit the modded box in
Alan
-
No my cold air feed goes on the corner above the velocity stack, you can just about see the cut, below the clip that holds both halves together. You can put it in where the velocity stack is or were you've cut out the section.
No need to retune, ECU will adjust the mixture
-
Yeah i see where you mean  Ahhh well ill be fitting that in tomorrow then, cant wait to here what it sounds like
Have you got any other sugestions on what i can do before it goes for its mot?
-
Yeah, make sure it doesn't fail
No but seriously make sure silly things won't fail you, like no water in the windscreen washer, airbag/abs lights on, wipers don't wiper properly, the spare tyre is bold or damaged (remove it if it is, rules say a spare tyre is optional but if it is equipped then it must be in sound condition). Other than that good luck :afro:
-
Aha, thats top of my list
Ok will do, cant wait to get it on the road, need my license first though  But my dad will be driving it to keep it running for the time being  It doesnt have airbags or abs, so thats 2 less things to worry about i guess
Ill get some work done on it tomorrow i will update when its all done
Cheers for the advice/help
-
COILOVERS wound all the way down and 16'' alloys, job done! :afro:
-
Aha i really want to drop it, but i dont have the money for coilovers
Is there any other way of lowering it? cutting an old set of springs from a scrappy maybe?
-
Good to hear you've sorted the idle issue out, what was it?
Hot air pipe isn't totally useless, it aids the running of the engine when cold and can be especially useful in cold weather.
Don't chop springs... to lower cheaply, at least buy a set of lowering springs or look for some cheap second hand deals.
-
The idle problem ended up being my acu needed resetting took all of 1 minute to fix after being out there for 5 hours the day before
Never mind to learn you have to fail first
Yeah for the summer i might run without it but for winter i may fit it again. but by the time i have passed my test summer is going to be over i reckon
Never mind.
Hmmmmm money is rather tight atm saving for insurance paying for lessons and also trying to live a life of pubs and i have a rather expensive girlfriend  Lowering it might have to wait a few months unless a car up my local scrappy has a set of coilovers on it and i can pick them up really cheap
Got offered a set of multi spoke rims earlier for £40 very tempted to spray them matt black keep you guys posted on that
-
Nice little project car :afro:
-
Easy..... Sack off the girlfriend then.
Or just cut down on the booze, will be good practice for when you have passed and want to drive and can't drink.
-
Nice car as a first car :afro:
Just my tuppence worth, if you've not passed your test yet i'd hang fire on any mods until you know how much your insurance will be when you pass! Young male + no driving experience + modified car = stupendously high premium!
I'd concentrate on getting the boot sprayed, give it a general spruce up and get it through the MOT. Enjoy driving for a couple of years and get some experience under your belt. Then a few years down the line look at modding or upgrading to a faster car etc.
I had a 1.4 mk3 as my first car, kept it pretty standard and couldn't fault it:
-
Well i have stopped drinking as much as i used to but only because i now see the girlfriend more, but hay lifes good i cant complain.
I checked the insurance on my own it will be £2000 thats paying monthly so...... for the first year maybe 2 as im only 19 im going on my mums insurance so it will now only cost me £1000 £200 deposit and nine payments of £79 or summit like that, so for my age and for a 1.4 its not to bad,and the mods im thinking of doing wont need to be told to the insurance company like joey mod, airbox and what not, and i havnt got to the money to lower it so atm im all good cant complain considering it was FREE
Hopefully going t be mot'ing it in may so my mum/dad can drive it to keep it off the drive way
But before then every time im off work i shall be working on it, just got told of my parents that it has a small leak somewhere near the water pump so i may have to see if something has come lose or weather im going to have to stick my hand in my pocket to solve it
Cheers for the interest and advice guys i really appreciate it
-
looking good dude ;)
sure you cant get the insurance any cheaper than that? if you go on your mums policy just make sure you still get your own no claims otherwise it will take ages to get cheaper insurance
-
Cheers mate, When your back from uni, do you fancy a day on working on the golf's?
Well the reason it is that high is because that company will allow me to take my no claims and i want to pay monthly so the premium stung me pretty bad
but that was just a quick search to see if i could afford to drive to decide weather i wanted lessons or not, got my lesson next thursday  PAY DAY!
-
Not wanting to p!ss on your bonfire, but going on your mum's policy if it is your car is classed as fronting, insurance companies really don't like it
Have you got a quote in your name with your mum/dad/any other experienced drivers as named drivers? I found that my premuim almost halved when my parents went onto my policy when I was your age
Also don't be tempted by companies offering shorter policies which still give you a years no claims....some other insurers refuse to acknowledge the discount.
Joey mod is a simple and effective mod, as are things like black badges, dewipering the rear etc
-
Thank you for the word of advice, the car is in my mums name any way, cant be bothered to transfer the papers over also thats how i can have her as the proposer, as well as the insurance company i found will let the named drivers take there no claims so it was a bit of a bonus really, but im not going to be needing insurance for a good few months as im still doing my lessons, but i will have a real good look around for cheaper quotes that was just a 20 minute find
Yeah im now going out to clean my engone cover, do the joey mod, fit my cold air feed, give it a proper clean and might look into dewipering, see how it looks
I will post photos this evening
-
yeah im back from the 1st to the 27th of April, want to get my golf going aswell
you deffo want to get some no claims, i just renewed my insurance last month, £590 with admiral :)
-
Even if your mum is the registered owner the insurance must e to the name of the main driver. If you have an accident and they request pictures of your car or someone goes to see it and notice it's modified then they'll suspect your the main driver and you'll be knee deep in sh!t.
Look for cheaper quotes too btw, when I was 18 I paid £1300 for a GTI 8v. Now I'm 20 (I do have 3 year's NCB though) I'm paying £1200 for a 16v, so there are cheaper places if you look. Check out the insurance section, loads of info there.
-
sam we can work on them at mine if you can drive to mine that is? i have 2 days off a week now so plenty of free time to work on them
As for the insurance as im only now doing driving lessons i did that quote in the space of 20 minutes to see weather or not i could afford it, if there are cheaper quotes out there then its all good and as for when i want to insure i will do my research before i decide what quote to get
Anyway what i did today, tbh it doesnt seem like i have done a lot, but i have plenty of photos and questions to ask so here goes
So firstly i took khares advice and did some work on my airbox, i dremeled the hot and cold feed pipes away inside the box, found some nice pipe for a cold air feed so now thats all ready to go in the car looks like this now
Just need to block of the old hot air feed and im sorted
Next my mum comes home and offers to take me to my local scrappy to see if they had any mk3's typically the day we decide to go they have no vw's what so ever so ended up coming out of with only one item that looks like this........
I think it looks a bit better than the old one, just a little touch really
When i got back i decided to take the cam cover of so i could rub it down and spray it when i took it off got a bit of a shock when i turned it over...........
Spoke to my dad about it, he said it could be one of two things, the head gasket is shot allowing water into the oil or as the engine only ever gets started and runs on tick over as i cant goanywhere in it the damp may of just built up and the oil isnt getting hot enough to evaporate the moist so it forms like that, dunno what you guys might think it is any advice would be good?
I then took the front grill of to remove the head lights to begin the joey mod, they came of nice and easy, got my mums nice hairdryer and began to warm it up whilst apply pressure with a screw driver and the fronts came of rather easy but then noticed i have a issue, the tutorial i found on the joey mod says paint the rough bits of the inside not the reflective bits (pretty obvious) but anyway everyone elses lights seem to be diffrent to mine because i have reflective bits all over the utside now can i paint them as they arnt angled towards the light or is it my unluckyness to have a set that cant be done i took some photos so you understand what i mean........
If anyone can tell me weather ill be ok to paint the outside or not it would be a great help?
So the last thing i found today was when the grill was off i noticed i had a puddle on the ground and it seems like i have a leak in my radiator  so thats another job i must do tomorrow, its not bad but i am leaving little puddles where ever i go
Sorry about the post being picture heavy but its the easiest way of showing what i have done and for others to try and help me with my questions
-
Also forgot to say, spoke to a mate that i work with he drives a real nice mk3 2.0 gti but as his wife is pregnant again he is going to have to sell it to buy a family car so i asked how much he wants he said 200 - 300 so i spoke to my dad he said i should buy it put the 1.4 motor in it for now then when im old enough have the 2.0l ready to drop in what do you guys reckon? is it as easy as it sounds? or is it gunna be a bit more complex? The gti will come with 4 months mot and tax so its a good runner but i cant get insured on it, well not for my price bracket anyway
-
You would have to declare the engine change in the GTI as a mod, so I expect the insurance premium would be higher than a standard 1.4. Also it would be a major headache, everything is different! The slam panel, rads, gear linkage, loom etc for starters, I expect the driveshafts would need changing, the steering rack, wishbones, exhaust, fuelling system including pump, etc etc. It's just not really worth it to be honest. I considered going the other way putting a gti engine in my 1.4 but it turns out pretty much every part of the car bar the main shell is different (better) in some way on the gti than the CL, hence why I just bought a gti.
In terms of your headlights yours are standard CL ones, I'm not sure if you have noticed GTI ones are different (I didnt spot it for a month or so of ownership of my 1.4 so you may have missed it too). Check Bellends dub rides thread, I noticed he has done the mod you are doing to the CL lights on his, might be worth dropping him a message?
-
buy your mates gti and swap any of the nicer gti bits over eg headlights, spoiler, bumpers
then either scrap or sell on whats left
-
Thank you for your reply, ok well i may take it off him because for £200 i can take all the nicer bits of his and put onto mine and i will probs sit the 2.0 engine on the engine stand round my back garden  Just in case
I am speaking to him on monday so will find out more then, i also posted on bellend's dub thread so hopefully i can find out what to do with them, so thanks for that aswell
Going to do some work on it, i will update what i got up to this evening
-
You can paint on the reflective bit around the outer edge. Think is because you've got single chamber lights it won't look as good as dual chamber lights like the GTI's have. I'd get some GTI headlights first (get them off the GTI you're buying :afro:) and then joey mod it.
With regards to the mayo behind the cam cover, I'd say it's lack of running. If you start her up once in a while but never take her for a motorway blast it'll be condensation rather than HG failure. Once you've passed, change the oil + filter and take her for a nice blast down the motorway. The Italian tune up works wonders but only do it if you're confident the engine is healthy and will take it no problems!
-
Ahhh beautiful, i may do it anyway just for the time being as they are apart and if the gti doesnt go through and what not so thanks for confirming it
Ahhh thats exactly hat my dad said so thats good news, i have cleaned it up and ill spray the cover and put it back on
one question when removing the rear windoe wiper what do people do with the hole? cover it im guessing but what with? i cant think of anything that wont look tacky?
-

Go to Halfords and get a rubber bung ;) there is a pack that has different sizes one fits perfectly :)
-
I agree with Khare, the mayo like build up will be due to it not getting a good run out, so not much to worry about there.
With regards to the gti, shep is right, the amount you would have to swop is seriously not worth it. I would buy the car, nab the interior, headlights/tail lights/front fogs (if it has them). The gti suspension is slightly better than the non-gti ones, so you may wish to swap that over as well.
You can buy a rubber bung by itself from halfords, you don't actually have to buy the set, I can't remember off the top of my head what the size is but when you get there it should be obvious!
-
Looks like a good little project dude  i prefer the single chamber over the GTi ones, if you joey mod them and paint the bottom & steps going up they look sick, will try and find some flicks of mine when i had them when i get in from work :) or check my build thread in the sig.

Thanks for your replies guys, sorry havnt been on this weekend and i havnt really done all that much aha, i work basically next to halfords so i will go there tomorrow, cheers for that

Dan i checked your build thread and i did the same as yours  They turned out well havnt fitted them as yet but the are all back together now ready to go on, did have a small issue with the bloody reflective stuff peeling off but i dont think its to bad so im hopping it wont cause to much trouble

Gave hem one last paint after this photo just to tidy them up a bit :) Will fit them tomorrow and take another shot
Also nearly finished rubbing down the cam shaft cover ready for a matt black finish to make the engine bay look a little more tidy
Jobs for tomorrow........ fit cold air feed and swiss cheese box, remove rear window wiper, Sort/repair leaking rad and hopefully hover the inside because its looking a bit rough inside
Will update tomorrow

Sorry mate, didn't see the question. You've done it right. :afro:
You gonna prime the rocker cover yeah? I'd lacquer it after as well, otherwise petrol will take the paint off.
-
Its ok  Did a bit of research before i did it :tongue
Well im not sure as my primer isnt heat proof? So i wasnt really sure wht to do tbh?
-

Prime it lightly with a few coats. Do you know if it's alloy or steel?
-
Hmmm ok, i was meant to ask before i did it so thanks for brining it up
Its steel
-

Its steel
Ah cool steel is easier to prime. Deffo prime it tho or the paint wont stick so will flake off soon. :)
-
My rocker cover in my sig was sprayed with non heat paint and then lacquered. Never had any issues. Had petrol and cleaned it the other day with a dry thinners rag and held up fine.

Thanks for the advice, i will hopefully do it tomorrow if i can find some primer
Interesting stuff i have some heat proof matt black paint anyway so i may aswell use it up
-
Well got a bit of work done today
First i fitted the headlights to see how they turned out i think they look pretty good
Did have an issue on one side i used masking tape on one but then realised i shouldnt have i did take the stickyness of the tape but clearly not enough and i have peeled some of the reflective stuff off?
As shown in the picture above, is this going to cause me problems in the mot or will i be ok? :undecided:
Then whilst i was fitting the front grill back on i thought i would have a go at tidying up the badges they looked like this at the start
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00044-20110328-1619.jpg)
Now they look like this
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00050-20110328-2234.jpg)
Will finish the rest tomorrow and post a picture hopefully they will come out as i hope if not will rub it down and respray again, ill post the finished job tomorrow
Last job was a good hover on the inside and i must say it come out pretty good, better than i thought........

I will give the inside a clean with some cleaner tomorrow to finish it off also finish my badge hopefully de wiper the rear and just general fiderling about really
will update again tomorrow
-
lights look good, mine look darker for some reason? although i've done exactly the same. makes a massive difference though and costs nothing
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Phone389.jpg
I wont be able to get my golf round yours until i can get it starting and running properly, i got my new wheels though if you fancy helping with those :P i know how you love polishing things
-
Coming along nicely mate,
like the headlights, makes a change to see the non gti ones modded,

Hope you guys like my amazing paint skills
Happy with it now, looks a lot better
Then i finally got around to doing some spry painting first was the cam cover turned out ok, well good enough for the time being i will do it better after its been mot'ed and what not
Before
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00012-20110323-1118.jpg)
After
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00055-20110329-1448.jpg)
Not the best but i think its a lot better
Lastly i finished spraying the badges, they turned out sh!t but i have thought a better way of doing it so i will try again thursday because i dont really want to put these on......
Never mind, last job was i cleanded the insides of the doors the seals and what not forgot to take a photo but they are looking a lot better, cars starting to look a lot more cleaner so im happy with the progress so far, thursday i am going to get in the engine bay and start to tidy/clean/find any problems and what not, also pump up the tryes before they get messed up
-
looking good mate, also got a 1.4 nice little project car until i get my ncb then gti time!
-
lookin good, the rocker cover looks pritty smart
-
Rocker cover looks good :afro:
Looks to me like your spraying waaay too much paint onto your badges. Lots of very very thin coats are much better than a couple of thick ones, it's particularly bad on the rear badge
-
Thaanks guys, its not the best but it will do for now
As for the badges i have another idea that the misses suggested yesterday si might try thattomorrow after my DRIVING LESSON! come on! aha
Will post more tomorrow
-
Nice work on the rocker!
When spraying the rear badge take the backing plate off and colour code it, or remove altogether, other wise it looks like a black blog on the car
keep it up
-
Hi guys, its been a while since i have made an update on this, im on the forum but rarely have anough time to make an update, but here it is :)
So i thought i would find all the rust on the car and make a start on getting rid of it, for looks mainly but i think some of the patches may have been questioned on the mot. So i began to grind the patches down until i got right down to the clean metal, i then applied some stuff called krust? my dad told me to coat it on it goes on blue and ends up turning black so i did this on all the patches then painted red oxide on, just to help protect them a little, after this i then got on with filling and sanding filling and sanding filling and sanding and so on...... most are now done and coated with red primer but there a couple more patches that need a little more filler but no biggy. so here are some before and afters and just general progress
So first front right wing before
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00065-20110407-1318.jpg)
Now it looks like this, nearly done just a little more filler
Rear right wing before
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00067-20110407-1318.jpg)
Now
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00071-20110413-1210.jpg)
Again not finished but pretty close
Front left wing when i had applied krust
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00069-20110407-1318.jpg)
Now
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00072-20110413-1210.jpg)
Im pretty happy with this one
Rear left wing
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00068-20110407-1318.jpg)
Now
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00073-20110413-1210.jpg)
And the worst one witch i did not get a photo of was passenger front door sill but it looks like this now, not done but again very close
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00074-20110413-1210.jpg)
I jhust found this litle bit of rust aswell so might do this at some point
Aswell as all of that me and sam (rcsammy) Made a hole for my cold air feed pipe, not fitted yet but im going to get it through the mot first
Whilst all of this was going on my girlfriend kindly offered to paint my badges and re do the paint on my headlights for me ( she enjoys art and painting)
Joey mod now done
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00076-20110413-1211.jpg)
And this is how my badges look now, i like them well chuffed
This is all for now, need to do a full service on it at some point though not sure on what oil, plugs, leads and air filter to go for, so if anyone has any advice i would very much appreciate it
Thanks for looking
-
looking better all the time dude, good work on filler!

Bumper care on the right before on the left

Pretty happy with the result not bad for a couple of hours cleaning
-
You've done well there mate!
now to get the boot painted
-
Thanks, might not spray the boot as i can get one from a scrap yard fot £10  Just need to find one the right colour :undecided:
-
looking good, that rust on the rear arch, have you polished or t cutted that? matches really well
could easilly get a boot in your colour from the scrapyard near Nick
-
good work on rust dude!
-
Cheers mate
Sam i just washed the whole car then used some triplewax i got from work consentracted on that one arch for 20 mins and it came out like that  Started doing the front arch so it works well
-
Little update
Just ordered some parts ready for its service, got some oil, oil filter, disturboter cap/arm and a sump plug, just need to order plugs and leads and get myself a pipercross air filter and im all done
-
hopefully that sorts your engine problems out, have a check the plugs are on the right cylinders when you put them on
-
hopefully that sorts your engine problems out, have a check the plugs are on the right cylinders when you put them on
Yeah well when they turn up i will fit them
Had a forum member tell me how to set the timing up and where to place the cap so should be all good
Ordered some sparks aswell now, so just need money for leads, as my filter is pretty decent
-
Well dont get much of a chance to update this but i have done a fair bit to the car now, dont have many pictures but i will post the ones i can find
Right so i have now done a full service on the car, minus ht leads...... need to get some money together for them, so i have finally got rid of all the gunk in the oil and solved the miss fire, but now i have come across a new problem, witch is,....... the revs seem to stick at like 2k and 3k and wont go back down all the time, now im not sure if its due to the auto choke maybe? but when i unplug this plug (not sure what it is) It then begins to idle perfectly fine?
So if anyone knows what sensor this goes to and what it does that would be great
ok so whilst i was trying to solve the problem i thought i would clean the tb whilst doing that i found this.....
Would this make an air leak or is it pretty tight seal still? if so are these expensive? :undecided:
Also finished the front end looking good i think
If you know the others to any of my questions would be great to here them thanks :) Going to make a post in mk3 section aswell
-
Looking good, you just need to give your grill a push so it clips into place under the headlights
-
Cheers mate, yeah i have done that now was just placed there for the photo really
Time to get it mot ready now
-
Looking good,
is it the idle speed contril valve thats playing up? would a good clean out solve it?
-
Looking good,
is it the idle speed contril valve thats playing up? would a good clean out solve it?
Thanks, cleaned everything, but still no good, but i think i may have found the problem, just need to source the item now
Been a while since i have made an update, tbh i havnt really done much/been able to do much to the car, so i thought i would prep the car for my sound system, again will be slow, but its getting there
A pair of 6x9's on the shelf now cut and fitted
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00154-20110525-1304.jpg)
I have also decided i want to build a false floor in the boot as its so uneaven and will make it annoying for my sub and amp to go in, so i though if im going through the effort of building it all i may aswell make it so i can keep my full size spare tyre so i am raising the floor 4" in total so not losing loads of space, i already have all the timber i need got it all from work for under £5 so was a bit of a steal really, heres how its coming along so far............
The boot before i started, the carpet has been removed
Now i have a basic shape/outline for the structure of the false floor, looks like this......
I shall be doing more tomorrow, so it will hopefully like like something by the end of the day aha, thanks for looking
-
coming along nicely dude, keep up the good work!
-
I'm really not a fan of 6x9s in the parcel shelf but I like everything else you have been doing so far.
I am planning on doing a similar thing with regards to the boot build, I intend to make a similar frame as yours but just sit it on the carpet where it comes only 2/3 of the distance from the back of the seats thereby leaving about 12 inches of full depth boot just inside, mount my 2 amps inside that along with my tools/survival kit etc with a lid, then sit my two sub boxes on top. Then have access from beneath to fix the sub boxes on with bolts and wing nuts so quickly removable via the bottom (when you know how). I'll keep an eye on this project.
By the way if you want to flog that tow bar I know someone who is looking for one.....
Adrian
-
Thanks guys, yeah as for the false floor, im sort of working out what i want to do as i go along really  i have just realised i need to leave a gap from the seats to the frame/floor so my seats can still fold down, also im not really sure how/where to put my sub and amp, i want something different i dont just want a box sat on the floor if you get what i mean, so it should be rather fun planning all of it, but after work tomorrow hopefully i can crack on and get somewhere with it
As for the tow bar, no im afraid i would like to keep it as i race motorbike's so i need to tow my bike on the back
Cheers
-
Haha towing motorbikes is the same reason I need one! Thanks for the heads up about the folding seats, il bare that in mind when I design mine.
Cheers
Adrian

A pair of 6x9's on the shelf now cut and fitted
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00154-20110525-1304.jpg)
you wanna get those bad boys covered up before someone decides they'd look good in their car with your parcel shelf still attached
-
Yeah i have been thinking about thta, what would you suggest i use? i have heard you can get a very thin material to put over them that doesnt effect the sound? Any ideas?
-
Acoustic carpet
-
Acoustic carpet
Thank you
One more question, what sort of carpet would i need to wrap a sub box, false floor and so on? Places to buy it how to appy it? any thoughts
-
Any sort of carpet you like. Acoustic carpet is only needed when you want to let sound through. The bay is good for that sort of thing, but local carpet places can sell off-cuts for peanuts if you want something cheap.
Strong spray adhesive is a good bet, 3M stuff is usually good.
-
Ok brilliant thank you, i dunno why i didnt think about normal carpet? i thought it might be a little to thick, to wrap a box? guess not
-
Obviously shag pile would be a bit difficult
Girlfriend's brother did his parcel shelf and sub box in offcuts. It's surprising how thin cheap carpet can be!
-
Yeah well i work next door to carpet right so i might have a chat with them before i go to work tomorrow
Thanks for the advice
Well i have not done loads to this as the weather was once again naff, but i have managed to get most of the annoying bits out of the way manged to cut both carboard templets out and cut on side onto my mdf, slow progress but i am getting there :)
Couple of pictures,
Carboard cut out on the drivers side
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00160-20110527-1244.jpg)
Then transferred onto my mdf
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00161-20110527-1447.jpg)
Hopefully going to cut the other side tomorrow morning will post some pictures up att some point
-
Wouldn't it have been cheaper, easier and quicker to simply stick a spacesaver in the boot than raising the flooring to accommodate a full size steelie? :undecided:
-
Cheaper, doesnt really matter tbh, i got all screws mdf and pine for under £10 from work :lipsrsealed:
And as for spacesaver, yes there is going to be one put in the car, the floor was mainly raised to allow for amp(s) and sub(s) the future will explain more
-
Right so the plans changed slightly, i still have a false floor, but it now is on 2" high, and i have only got the back bit done, the reason for this is because i got hold off 3 amps, 2 subs, power cap and all the cables for £50, subs are 300watts rms and the amps put out 430rms @ 4 ohms, so bit of a result  All of this was done today :)
Not the best picture in the world, but you get an idea, so they came in this pre built box and i just was not happy with it, so i got some info and have made some designs for 2 sealed 1.0933 cuf boxes got some 18mm mdf and cut them to size
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00163-20110602-0837.jpg)
So i had my plans, had my materials and had my equipment, it was time to crack on, so first i put the back half of the false floor to allow the the boxes to sit on something
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00167-20110602-1203.jpg)
Next up was to make the boxes :)
One done
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00169-20110602-1553.jpg)
Then 2
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00173-20110602-1917.jpg)
After this i had to the put my amps somewhere so i made a couple of shelfs
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00174-20110602-1955.jpg)
From the back
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00175-20110602-1956.jpg)
I managed to get them wired in aswell to test them out, lets just say running at volume 12 impressed me :D aha
Well next time im free i shall make the shelves look a bit nicer, finish the front half of the false floor and wrap it all in black carpet,
But not bad for a days work, luckily i had a extra pair of hands as my girlfriend decided she wanted to help :D
Comments welcom, will post updates if and when i can get around to doing more so far the materials and equipment has cost me a little under £70, thats what you call a budget project
-
Well done on that find mate, bargain!! Personally I would put some sort of insulation under the false floor though to stop the costant rattle you will get on bare metal. Will drive you nuts eventually!
-
I'd miss a boot for a daily and a bit overkill for my tastes but............ what a bargain and what top job you've done and quickly too. fair play. :afro:
Also agree that you may want to put something between the wood and the boot floor..............
-
Looking pretty pro dude.
How close are the 6x9s from hitting the top of your boxes? Looks like it could be close when shelf is down, but it might just be the camera angle.
-
defo slap sum foam or loft insulation under all that and also glue sum 2 the walls inside of the sub boxes will help with sound sooo much
-
Thank you for the comments guys, it is no where near done yet, just a small amount of progress, yes it is a over kill but i live music and i really love bass, so its what i like
As for sound deadining, it shall be done in the whole boot when money lets me, as you can tell this is a really budget build so i spend money on it if and when i have it, and tbh the only people im going to have in my car is either my gf or a mate so i have back seats for the space iv lost in the boot aha
The 6x9's clear by a good 1 - 2 inchs, and as they wont be needed for bass, just mid and high end i dont need to worry about the volume of space under them
got some quotes for carpet from a few shops today, i shall have a look online at some point, but tbh i think sound deadining might be first, i shall update as i go along, working on it all day sunday so should see some progess then, thanks for the comments guys
-

Now i needed to make a battery box as im running one in the boot, where its going im not sure yet, but i think i have a plan, its a bit late now to be making more noise in the garage so this is what i have got done (sorry for the bad picture)
I shall carpet the box but first i need to decide where to mount it, Should have a few hours on it tomorrow night and wednesday morning
Comments welcome

If you're putting your battery in the boot and enclosing it like that, I would connect the vent on the battery to the outside.
Should be small hole on the side of the battery. You can fit a little elbow into it (Some batteries come with them) and a bit of tube to the outside.
I think its hydrogen gas they produce normally, but they can produce some horrible fumes if something isn't right.
-
Battery in the boot needs to be a sealed type with a vent pipe to the outside world, standard battery will be no good and if anything could be dangerous.
-
Isn't it normally the battery that causes cars to burst into flames when involved in an accident?
-
Thanks for the thoughts guys, but my dad works as a caravan engineer and has told me everything i need to do to make it safe, if it can sit in a caravan then it can sit in my boot
Everything will slowly come to light
-
So is it a sealed battery, if not then it will vent hydrogen which in a enclosed space is not good.
-
Nop it is a vented battery with a breather pipe, whitch shall lead to the outside of the car, and the mdf box shall be made sealed at the bottom incase of a leak

Aha, it was hydrogen! Thanks Wayne, that was going to bug me all day.
Nop it is a vented battery with a breather pipe
Thought so.
-
So a vented battery with a breather pipe isnt so bad im guessing? its either this or find space in the engine bay, its a 1.4 so there should be room? what do you reckon?

Thats the set up exec cars like BMWs and Mercs have. Used to change the batteries for Halfords

Hi guys i know its been so long since i have been on the forum and posted about my car so i thought it was about time to show you the progress so here goes i dont have many photos just a few from before i last posted to half way through and how it looks now so here goes
so last time i was on here i think my car looked something like this
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00131-20110428-1405.jpg)
Well after this photo i have been doing a lot of home spraying and managed to get the car to look something like this
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG_8113.jpg)
As you can see it now has part coloured coded bumpers with a gloss black strip all the way round the car and if any of you remmeber it used to have a black boot well you will happy to know now it has a red one
So the last two things that have changed since that photo are............ Coilovers
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00313-20111014-1102.jpg)
And i sprayed my steelies
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/ferdinor/vw%20golf%20mk3/IMG00319-20111019-1705.jpg)
This is how the car sits now and will do until i can afford rims
I hope you like

Has anyone ever takin the helpers out of the rear coilovers? i want to go lower but i have run out of thread?
-

Cant decide weather to go lower and not be able to get in any car parks or stay at this boring hieght?
What do you guys reckon?
-
i took mine out of my coillies. still out now but av still got thread left. it will only sit on the bumpstops, and just wont move. unless you cut the bump stops down a little bit. good work on the car though. gotta love a slammed car
-
Yeah see im not worried about the ride in the back as im not sat in the back  the fronts can go down 10mm without taking the helpers out and i would lover about 15mm on the rear but im just worried im not going to be able to go ermmm anywhere with a speed bump?
-
I wouldnt worry abkut that too much.
-
Well i have now removed the helpers from the rear and gone down about 20mm and lowered the front a further 10mm so its sitting level and rather low, ill post a photo tomorrow and see if i can actually get to work
Funny now when i jack the rear of the car up the splitter just bends on the floor aha
Pictures to follow
-

-
You'l end up smashing a vr splitter i think
forgot to ask, how did you fix the false floor to the boot floor?
-
Nah theres plenty of room well................ aha
Well the amp is now under the false floor so that helped hold it down and also got a 1 meter length of heavy duty velcro as i wanted it to hold down but also be removable and it seems to work a treat
Ill take some photos for you when i next turn the amp up if you want?
-
Feck me that's pretty low! Looks good though
