Title: LOOK! I just bought myself for Christmas: Winter Wheels & Tyres.
Post by: am1w on 19 December 2010, 19:58
Always wanted these wheels. Now I've got them. Quite excited. Thanks Steve and thanks Snoops for informing me of their availability yesterday.

Tasty

Thanks.

Have been after a set since I got the car.
Now I'll order the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 225/40 R18 92W winter tyres from France tomorrow.
They've just come on the market in this size about a week ago!

My Christmas present to myself.

Oh, you evil one. How hurtful.
I think I can swing it as I normally do.

The Polo won't move forwards at all.
I'll again try tomorrow.

Prayers from all please.

Since you love your monzas so much seems a shame to spoil them with winter salt and maybe cause white worm. So i would use these for winter myself if i was such a monza lover.

Absolutely. They'll be tucked away for the winter. Can't afford to bugger them at £450 each.

Wheels look good... but why are you getting the tyres from France - and how much are they?
Is it because Winter tyres are pretty much out of stock everywhere here just now?

This is the French site:

And these are the tyres I will buy:

I will as it is THE LAW.

See what you did? I got your wheel infection. However, kept it silver.

Never expected to buy a second set of wheels, but these were the only wheels I have wanted apart from the Monza Shadows. Snoops alerted me yesterday as he knew how much I liked these VMRs on the 'non-Monza Wheel' thread. I thought long and hard. At the price and for what I get, I think it is a very good deal which I simply could not resist.

Now to get the winter rubber.

Quite stressed at the moment. One of the busiest days at work tomorrow and the nightmare journey won't help.

They also seem to be a bit cheaper on most tyres.

Lovely wheels but £250 a tyre?!?!
I know you want the best for your car but it seems like so much overkill. You have said on numerous times that London gets very little snow and you never get over 5Mph going to work and that is on the dry days!  Can't help thinking you are spending a helluva lot for little use but your cash at the end of the day.
Car will look great though with those wheels.

I've always wanted those wheels and those tyres. So I will indulge. A fool and his money and all that ....... No I am pleased with my purchases. I'll put it aginst tax over a three year period, so it will cost me much, much less.

Blimey, I disappear off to work for a few hours and the next thing I know you've bought some wheels and it's snowed all over me.
Nice one Asker, I nearly bought a set of these very rims myself recently until a set of BBSs dropped into my lap unexpectedly.
They'll look great against the red, lots of pics on the Yank forums with cars running these style wheels.
Nice price for the tyres too  but as you say, over a three year period they should pay for themselves, especially if you don't wear them out and sell the wheels and tyres on again in a few winters time when stocks of winter tyres are low again and someone is willing to reward you handsomely for a set in desperation on ebay!
Title: Re: LOOK what I just bought for my winter tyres.
Post by: am1w on 20 December 2010, 12:49
Thanks for the thumbs up Exonian!

Ordered the tyres today form the French supplier pneus as they are cheaper than mytyres and have these particular tyres in stock which mytyres don't.
Spoke to the lovely Natalie, who was most helpful.

Additionally, Kwikfit no longer have stock of the Conti 830Ps. The Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s, which I have bought, have not reached these shores or Germany for that matter!

Tyres should be at the tyre fitters Thursday. So it is all working out.

Sold the Bridgestones for £150 for the set. Hate them.

Can't wait to be safe and mobile. I sadly feel this weather is here to stay with us.

At least the Monza Shadows will be protected. At £450 a piece they are too valuable to be damaged in dangerous winter conditions. The additional expense of fixing them was not an option and I felt, in the long run and all things considered, I made the right decision for my particular situation.

Northway Tyres, whom I am using, are part of the Kwikfit Group though they keep this quiet for obvious reasons.
Unfortunately, they have run very dry so this business venture will have to wait until next year. Maybe we could pool resources?

Am quite excited by my purchase, but feel a bit sick at the overall cost which will be close to £1500 all in.  :embarassed:

Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound.

I think the Xenons will now have to wait and wait.

Absolutely.
Over 3 years it will cost £500 per year, I'll put it down as expenses against tax, get 50% back, then also use the depreciation code, so it will be, nearly but not quite, free. I'll even make some money if I sell the wheels and tyres.
So all-in-all, a good investment.
They call this tax avoidance and not tax evasion.

Red to the rescue!

Oooch 1500 squid just before xmas........ but I'm sure there be worth it. The VMR's are lovely wheels and there be easy to sell on with the winter tyres in the future should you feel the need. So when will they be fitted on the car then?

Yes Kwik Fit do this.
They don't keep them on site though, they have a central storage depot somewhere, that's why they need a few days notice when refitting the summers.

My logic behind spending £1400 is that my Talladegas cost £850 EACH from VW.
If I'm to slide into a kerb in the snow, I'd much rather do it in my £100 winter wheel!

Plus I'll feel much safer out on the roads... and possibly get to go snowboarding more since my car should be able to get to the hills without getting stuck!

For me the convenience of Kwik Fit was ideal, I suppose I could have found room in the garage/shed or at work but that means carrying four tyres four times a year (two trips there and back with a car full of tyres, loading/unloading etc).

Couldn't be bothered.

And I said previously they were the cheapest and so careful with my wheels.

On the other thread I was going to point squirellGTi at this site as they have stock of winters at decent prices, when you factor in the exchange rate

This forum is fantastic!

It put me on to DealDrivers.  Although I didn't get my car from them, simply waving the DealDrivers quote at my dealer got the price of my car down a lot.

It explained to me how to get the same insurance I had been quoted £650 for, for £250.

It taught me all about winter tyres, last year, so that I ordered the things before the panic and the price rises this year.

What's not to like?

Rolfe.

For storage I've got a couple of these, one for the GTI and one for the wifes summers and alloys:

On the other thread I was going to point squirellGTi at this site as they have stock of winters at decent prices, when you factor in the exchange rate

I'm not too good at German, can you get this in the UK? Thanks

To be honest I don't really notice much difference, I know you all knock the Bridgestones but TBH I don't have a problem with mine, I quite like them.  I've not driven the Contis on normal roads yet as there's been nought but snow since I got them, will tell you later if I find them noisy on tarmac.

That will be interesting to hear as most winter tyre reports I have read state they are a lot louder on normal roads compared to summer tyres due to the tread.

I have the same set up as Gizzy. Summer Bridgestones and Winter Contis.
Not really noticed any noise difference on normal roads.
They feel 'softer' and the turn in is less sharp on normal roads but you would be hard pushed to tell the difference.
Certainly not 'a lot louder'.

Hope this helps.

Right then been out this morning on clear gritted main roads (ungritted side roads horrendous) and there is probably a slight more rumble noise from the winter tyres than with the summers, but certainly not enough to think twice about getting some.  The steering on corners feels slightly softer also but again is hardly noticeable, imo there is very little noticeable difference and in safety terms absolutely no contest.
Title: Re: LOOK! I just bought myself for Christmas: Winter Wheels & Tyres.
Post by: Hartside on 23 December 2010, 11:54
No real difference in road noise on tarmac from either of our cars with winters fitted. Strangely my mate reckons his new Fiesta sounds really noisy since fitting them, and they are the same ones I fitted to our Yaris. Steering definitely not as confidence inspiring if driven hard into a corner, but then again you tend not to drive hard knowing you've got them fitted (at least I dont)

Thanks for all the responss. Most appreciated.

Gizzy/GolfGti: They probably sound noisier (Gizzy) due to the gritted road surfaces. They are supposed to be very quiet tyres. The slightly less focused steering response is a given due to the softer tyre compound.

Rolfe: The Hankook Icebear 300 are very good winter tyres and very, very quiet from what I have been told and now onfirmed by you.

Hartside: Thanks for your input.

I'll post soon on how my Michelin PA3 winters feel in comparison to the Bridgestones. The PA3s are W rated tyres (169 mph) and have a slightly harder compound than most winter tyres. This might help the steering response. It is one of the reasons I chose them, apart from their quietness (from reviews).

I'd say they're bloody miraculous, actually.

I had them fitted a few days before the snow hit, so when I first drove away on them, there was no grit on the road.

Have been reading some interesting reviews and tests in North American rags regarding the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s.

They are considered to be in-between an all-season and cold weather tyre. They tested them as V rated. Mine are W rated. They are excellent for handling and grip on dry and wet pavements and effective all year round except for those odd very hot days when temperatures go above 25 deg C. They are effective in light snow conditions but not in heavy snow situations and thick ice. They are considered to be THE high performance cold weather tyre.

So they seem appropriate for the weather conditions in London.

I'll report my findings as soon as I have them fitted. I might also be the first to have bought these on this forum.

Can't wait!

I have now read that Bridgestone have brought out an all weather tyre the A100.

Supposed to be fine on snow, ice wet and obviously a decent summer set up, guess might be the way for some of you to go if you didn't want two sets of tyres.

More than happy with mine and being as it has snowed all morning and we now have 4 inches of lying fresh snow will no doubt be putting them to good use in the next few days.

Dare I say it? You read my thoughts. Some users in the USA have left them on all year round! Two drivers changed from Michelin PS2 summers to these and preferred them overall. One was driving an Audi RS4 and the other a BMW 540i Estate. Most of them have remarked on their quietness. They also felt that handling was not obviously affected.

I'll have to 'suck it and see'. It is a process that might be interesting but is proving very expensive. Madness.

In the thick of Christmas shopping so using the Blackberry. Was so stressed in the M&S car park on the King's Road, Chelsea. Cars so closely parked. Nightmare. Nearly all done now.

I paid £246.90 per corner from pneus for the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s. These are the cheapest they have been since they were available 2 weeks ago. They had not been produced by Michelin until then in 225/40 R18 92W XL. Prices have been all over the place, especially from mytyres. At one time they wanted £3818, then the next day the price from them dropped to £239.30 and now to £264.70 today.

They are only slightly more expensive (by approximately £33 per corner) than the V rated Conti 830Ps.

Rolfe.

More like good God! And now I am in a bit of a quandry: space wise.

Just before October the Conti 830P winetrs were available for £164 from Kwikfit. mytyres were around the same price. Now they are £213, though p3eps managed to find them with some help from me for £202 from pneus. pneus have now run out!

I have now been told quite categorically by my family that there is no way I am allowed to store the Monzas in the house. So they will have to be stored by the tyre fitters which I am most unhappy with. At present, the fitters have no room. Maybe my ex-wife's garage? Well, I re-negotiated today, and will be able to store the wheels only in certain designated places. I want to fit the winters to the VMRs, sell the Bridgestones and in March '11 fit the Monzas with Continental 5P tyres.

It is slowly dawning on me that I can, in the final analysis, only really have one set of wheels and two sets of tyres. Now, if I am really lucky and if the new Michelins prove not to be a big disappoinrent for summer use, then I will end up with one set of tyres and wheels which would make things simple. Though I simply doubt it.

What will, be will be.

Buy some wheel bags and im sure they maybe more willing to let you store them in house. Most people look on them as smelly and dirty but if there in wheel bags they are not. Just stress its your saftey they are risking not letting you have two sets of wheels.
Just hide them under beds when in wheel bags.

Your recommendation of the Vreds is doing me proud too.

They are as rare as hen's teeth.

am1w, you have to tape the toe.  I broke one of mine in April, and because some idiot nurse didn't spot the break on an x-ray nothing was done for me.  I struggled on without any treatment, which was very painful.  Months later a review of the original film showed it had been broken all along.  It still isn't right.

Then in November I did exactly the same thing to a different toe (long story, don't ask).  A different nurse at a different hospital said she wasn't going to x-ray it because she was going to tape it up anyway.  What a difference!  I could walk normally and although I can feel a callus and there's still some bruising, it feels healed.

Rolfe.

Why thank you...

In answer to your question...
4 x 8.5"x19" VW Racing wheels with 225/35/19 tyres.
4 x 8.5"x19" VW Racing wheels spare.
4 x 8.0"x18" BBS CH025 wheels with 225/40/18 winter tyres.
4 x 8.0"x18" BBS CH025 wheels spare.
4 x 7.5x18" VW Monza Shadows with 225/40/18 tyres.
Obviously, one set of tyred wheels will be on the car.

Then theres:
4 x 7"x16" BBS RXIIs with Toyo T1Rs on.
8 x 7"x16" BBS RXIIs spare.
4 x 7"x16" BBS RXIIs with Toyo T1-S on, on my old Mk3.
Then there's an odd 6.5"x16" BBS RXII.
An odd space saver from the Mk3

4 x 6"x15" New Fabia wheels and tyres (actually mothers, whilst she has her winter wheels/tyres on)
And soon, 4 x 6.5"x16" with winter tyres OR 7"x17" VW Classix with summer tyres on, from my old mans Mk5 TDI170.

I think there's an odd Audi A2 wheel up in the garage loft too...

Hmm...that's it. I think.

Ordered on 20/12 at 11.15am.
Tyres left Worms (near Mannheim), Germany on 22/12
In Best (near Eindhoven), The Netherlands on 23/12. Stuck there.
Then probably to the port of Rotterdam in Holland on their way to Blighty.

Well past the 5 days before they arrive.

Gives me time to organise storage.

I did the drawings and my mate built it. Steel prices have gone up lately, but you should still be able to have something like that made for £200 ish.

I'm having a lower sectionm done to hold bare wheels, leaving the upper sections for wheels/tyres.
I doubt I'll get all my wheels on it...but I'll be close.

Whilst both Snoops and Ess_Three are on this thread, may I ask you both if a 225/40 R 18 tyre which is slightly stretched on an 8" rim compared to a 7.5" rim, become noisier or will this not be an issue?

Or, will the opposite occur?

Oh and the other question is, will the ride be affected?

Michelins PS3s are brilliant with excellent rim protection.
The Conti 3s are to be replaced in Jan '11 by Conti 5s. The Contis don't have effective rim protection, which is a must with 18" wheels. The ContiSportContact 3s on the Merc now look the worse for wear after 5k miles and those are the front ones! Madam has also kerbed both front AMG alloys beautifully.
Definitely good rim protection would have helped.
If the 5s are anything like the 3s for rim protection, I'll buy Michelin PS3s. Hence my signature.

Don't you have Park Assist?
Tut-tut...

Best add it to your list of retro-fits.

Gizzy, really. It was too cold and I did not have the energy at 8 am in a car park in Kings Cross. She's young enough to be my grandchild. O, dear, this makes it sound really disgusting.

Stop it! You are egging me on.

Now if you were there, in that position, it would have been a different matter!

Yeah and the whole of London would have run away screaming in horror

I have sensors, front and rear. Don't need Park Assist as I am still in my prime! Anyway, nothing could have assisted me in that situation!

I think it is going to be touch and go. More touch, me thinks.

They come in two parcels, two tyres per parcel. The have been properly separated so one parcel will arrive either tomorrow or Friday, the other next week probably. Unless, lady luck shines on me.

Partial good news.

Second set of two tyres in Oldbury, West Midlands.
From there probably to a depot in London. Then the delivery to the tyre fitters.

I'll have them fitted Sat 8th Jan, just two days before my Birthday! A good Christmas + Birthday rolled into one.

Now please don't ask me my age as a 'gentleman' never divulges this, just as a 'lady' keeps her salary secret!

Hi Alex.

Tyres en route to London since 6 am. First to the DPD depot which is near the fitters, then scanned, then delivered to the fitters.

Can't see it happening today unfortunately.

Happy New Year.

Right. Saturday the 8th January it is for my winters to be attached, but to which wheel?

I am, to put it mildly, in a bit of a wheel quandary.

Do I fit the winters to the VMRs and allow the very expensive Monzas to be stored, with or without tyres on a rack at the fitters (worry, worry), or do I fit the winters to the Monzas whence I can always keep an eye on the darlings. I have decided I don't want to store wheels at home or carry anything heavy due to my delicate shoulder which has just about healed after nine months of pain and discomfort.

Maybe it is not such a good idea to have two sets of wheels, or is it? As far as two sets of tyres, I am happy with this.

Advice please, but please don't tease or ridicule.

Stick them on the VMRs or you will regret it when white worm starts on the monzas

Definately agree with that put them on your new wheels, wish I had a second set of wheels so I could keep my Monza's pristine.

I believe it is when moisture gets underneath the lacquer and begins to corrode the alloy, usually where the wheel has been chipped by stones etc.  Just ruins the look of the wheels completed and as they are a bit more specialist as a refurb they should be preserved at all cost.

That's why I bought the VMRs. The four of them cost £60 less than a single Monza Shadow!
Maybe, I did right in retrospect.

I think Robin added in my explanation of white worm.

Your asking laq to stick to a non keyed surface. So the contact will give same as paint to a non keyed surface does. Stone chips, tyre changes etc all upset the bond. Winter with wheels stuck in salt covered snow does not help either. Think of the shock of the cold to then heat from brakes in winter how the differences of material expand and contract. etc.
White worm is simply the laq lifted off the surface. Constant dampness, heat/cold and freezing just makes it spread.

Take the Monzas off, put them in boxes and ignore them until you sell the car.
They are a stupidly finished wheel that I would have hoped would never be produced again, with VWs reputation for corroding diamond cut wheels...it's been happening since the Mk2.

Run the VMRs all year...they look better anyway.

Just back from the tyre fitters.
Seen the wheels and the tyres.
Will fit the winters to to the VMRs. The wheels have a slight lightish gold colour as in the pictures. They should look ok. They are pretty IMO and superb value.
Will store the Monzas in the VMR boxes at the fitters.
The manager there has been on the Nurburgring in a Maclaren FI and posted one of the fastest/fastest time.
Pre-sold the Bridgestones.
Sat 8th Jan 8.30 am will be D-day.

What have I done? Mad. Blame you lot.
At least, I will no longer have wheel/tyre nightmares.

My wicked Insurance Company would not increase my premium for winter tyres but would if I put them on non-standard and non-factory VW alloys by £120!

Additionally, the issue of storing the £1900 Monza Shadows with or without tyres at a Tyre Fitters is too worrying for me. Besides, they cannot store wheels and neither can I.

Therefore, the wheels are for sale.

God intervened and I was in too much pain to wait and have the winters put on. So they are being stored.
When the Conti 5Ps arrive, I'll put those on and sell the Bridgestones.
Sold the wheels and took a bit of a hit. They were quite pretty I must admit.
So that's that for the time being.
