How big a car does she need?
Maybe a junior hot hatch like the Fiesta ST, 208 Gti, Clio RS, MINI JCW ?

Mini's are too funky, wouldn't touch a French car with a barge pole  and at 37 years old a Fiesta isn't an option! It's down to two now, the GTI and the 125d - hopefully the Beemer will be as good a drive as the GTI then it's decision time

If you can live with the 125 looks then it'll be a wise buy. I suppose that's the trouble with the Golf, it's so good at so many things within it's pricepoint/running costs, it's hard to consider an alternative. Maybe a Leon Cupra  if you want the same size as the Golf for practicality? Or do you not want the missus having a faster car than you?
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

We have similar speed cars - it avoids arguments   Leon is a great car - badge snob however so that's out (and its quicker ) The Beemer is like you say a wise choice as its quick (6.5) yet economical (58).

If your a badge snob your a badge snob, i find it sad people are so but so be it.
I missed the polo Gti off the list as I dont know if they have fixed the engine/dsg issues yet.
Seems you have narrowed it down to two. I just hope the bmw is good.
I will admit when I see two cars the same in a drive way I think the owners must have no imagination. If it was me in a similar situationbi think I would let her have the GTI family car and get myself something less practical.

My wife has our white mk6 GTi, and up until March this year I had a white Leon FR diesel and can honestly say I hated it and felt slightly embarrassed by it. Going one step further and having matching Golfs would be a bigger no no IMHO.

His and hers cars does look like a lack of imagination, thankfully now having an Estoril Blue 320d M-Sport the cars look sufficiently different and offer two completely different drives pending mood.

Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I don't think you should rule out the Fiesta ST, its incredibly good and incredibly cheap.  Interior is barely less roomy than the Focus either so unless you really need both cars to have the same space.  Why not a Focus ST either?

Or if you don't have to have two hot hatches (and why would you need more than one?) how about an Octavia vRS with a few high spec interior options (£23k)?  Or you could go for a C-class (£26k).  Or a Freelander (£24k).  I guess I'm saying why wouldn't you have two very different cars?  Variation is good right?

However, if you're gonna rule these options out just get the BMW!  Really makes much more sense than having two GTIs.

Bear:

Fiesta - too old for this, it's a young lads car.
Focus ST - too chavy/expensive to run
Octavia - old mans car
C-class - too slow unless you get the top of the range = too expensive
Freelander - not a farmer

May be weird reasons for discounting them I know

Can you tell I'm/we're very picky

I nearly ordered another Audi TT but decided having 2 coupes with barely any passenger space or able to carry a snowboard wasn't the practical choice and the spec of the GTi was too good & value for money to ignore.
What about a TT - same engine as the GTi therefore similar power and performance.
On order: GTi Mk7 carbon grey 3 door manual
Own: 57 plate GTi tornado red 3 door manual with cruise, 60 plate TT Coupe 2.0 S Line black with comfort pack

I've got a TT at the moment! Great cars though!

New TT is out next year, it would be daft not to wait for it if you were getting one. I bet there'll be another epic wait on the cards if you did get an early order in for the MK3 though.
