Great thread.

And I appreciate Penguin Gti's comments, and I feel the same between my Gti and Polo!

IMHO small cars are always fun.  You get to the limit quicker, you can feel the whole car very quickly, and something like a modern GTi is so high tech and refined, that you need an appreciation of statistics to get a buzz from what has been engineered.

Obviously I drive the same roads with the same two cars, and when I look at the journeys times they are hugely different.  Cornering speeds 20mph higher and so on.  I would need a supercar to go another 10mph higher, and quite frankly that would be madness wrt road safety.

GTi best all-round ride ever.

IMO if it was a tad narrower, it would be perfect!

I think I know how you feel.

I have had my Mk6 GTi for over a year now and having narrowed my choice down to the Golf from the Audi S3 and the Focus RS I find myself questioning the decision that I made. The RS looks like a real mad car and by all the accounts I have read is a hoot to drive so every journey would be an adventure.

Then I remember that I had a Clio 182 for 3 months and had to change it as every journey became a 'race'. It was only going to be a matter of time before I had an accident so it had to go.

I have had BM's, Porsche's, GTi's of all versions and makes,  but nothing and I mean nothing comes close to the Mk6 GTi.

I have fallen in love with it.

Maybe you need to do the same as well. Go away for a dirty weekend.
Mk6 GTi - returned to leasing company after 3 great years and replaced with :

Mk5 GTi - Edition 30 - Revo 1 and some tweaks - 310 bhp. Its a better car than the Mk6  - Now sold and replaced with :

Mk6 R - Rising Blue 5 Door. Won't be standard 270bhp for long

Family Car : Mercedes ML420 with 360 bhp
Looking at Porsche Macan as replacement

Same as you Spartacus. Owned all shapes and types. But this car is just about perfect.
No wonder it is the best selling car in Europe.
Our complaints on this forum are minor and are from people who love their cars enough that any criticism is for honing a near perfect object to satisfy personal requirements.
I must admit I am in love and it is a long term.

Me too. The only thing I'd change it for would be an R. But I can't afford one of them so I'll stick with the GTi.

Price is no concern to me.

I just wanted a car which is practical with a big enough boot (the R has a miserable sized one), is fast enough to satisfy the devil in me, has elegant cloth seats as I hate the discomfort of leather, is smooth and quiet, is easy to park in the work car park, is reasonably economical, can be nicely fettled with retro-fit mods, looks understated but elegant, has a dealer service department close by, causes a bit of envy, makes me feel a proud owner with good taste, the list goes on and on.

A perfect partner.

Am1w, you've mentioned a few times about the R's boot being a poor size. Is it really that bad? Is there stuff you carry that you wouldn't get in an R?
The Golf is probably one of the smallest hatches I have had as I usually have family sized cars but to be honest I've not come across anything that I've been unable to carry. I suppose its horses for courses at the end of the day.

Ha ha, I'll take whatever comments come about my Bon Jovi likes...

I do love the golf. When you drive another car you notice all the little things that the other car doesn't do that the GTI does.

But I think I can do without the performance next time. Either that or I'm buying two cars and limiting my use of the faster one.

And without turning this into a leather vs cloth vs GTI vs R topic again. I do agree with am1w about the cloth and the R. I love the tartan seats and I prefer the GTI to the R. although maybe the R engine would be better. (ha ha after just saying I could do without the performance)

I am a hopeless case
