A bit from my heart...
« on: 01 November 2010, 23:29 »
Ok guys I've got a little bit I'd like to share and if you have any advice or thoughts I'd appreciate them.

In short I think I am bored with the performance of my car.

When I got it I loved it. Then mapping the car I loved it even more. Every time I drove was a wow moment. Now though I can drive it at full throttle and hardly feel the performance. I know the car is covering ground at the same speed but it just doesn't feel like to me. I have been through a phase where I believed this was because the car was poorly but in hindsight I think it is just my sensations have changed.

To further my confusion my partners little corsa - only a 1.0 - feels nippy and yet my GTI almost feels flat.  :embarassed:

Apologies for speaking my heart a bit. Any one else here ever felt similar or do I just need a cold bucket of water over my head?

On top of that my driver seat is so blooming squeaky. Need to get it replaced or something at the service next week.

Try giving the Golf a rest, drive the Corsa for a week, then get back in, it`ll feel like a new car !
I felt the same when I had been driving my supercharged 2.8 V6 Passat for a few months. Man, I miss that car

Thats what i do.
Its just you have become use to it.
I have not used the GTI for over a week and will not till next weekend. It will feel quick again.
The problem the mk6 has is its too refined and too quiet and too linear in its power delivery so it never feels that quick even when mapped. It lacks that old car style turbo kick

My cars performance is not top of the list for me as it’s the all round package they led me to buy a GTI. I love the car ‘equally’ for its looks, refinement, badge and performance. That’s why I personally have no interest in re-mapping my car.

I use a 13 year old Ibiza GTI as my daily driver so my Golf always feels quick when I use it. However the road feel is much better in the older car.

Get hold of a Sprint Booster, really gives the re-map a kick. I was a bit dubious before getting mine despite having tried one on another car, but it just wakes the darn car up.
Another thing to watch is the ECU adapts to driving style even when you're remapped, and as you don't drive at full throttle most of the time (unless you're nuts) the ECU will gradually lean the car off to bias the mapping towards low emissions and better fuel economy. So once in a while you need to take the car back to standard and put the mapping back on again fresh a few days later so it is back to optimum.

Drive some really small tight roads, concentrate on maintaining your speed through the corners and ride the wave of torque.

My best friend has a 52' plate RS6 which is tuned to over 600bhp - i drive it regularly on his company insurance and it's the fastest car i've ever driven! But it handles like a Pug 207 (less feel than a dead elephant) - and my Golf feels light on its feet compared to that!

Admittedly, the Golf feels pretty slow after it but i soon acclimatise and enjoy the Golf for what it is.

I do sympathise... Time to upgrade to a Golf R?
