Hi all,
thought id get some pics of my new car that il be bombing around in as from June, New to the dub scene currently been in the blue oval scene for a while.
Spotted the car on the way back from dropping my son off to pre-school, 2 owners from new, with a FSH, not bad for £500
Theres a few little dents and scratches but they all be sorted in time. Not 100% sure where im going with it at the moment, thinking of going for part green/satin black.

next on the list, is to spray and fit the de-badged grill. :smug:
-
Ok....

Brakes are starting to get low
Steering rack is fecked, but im managing to get away with topping it up once a month

They dont look that bad in life, il have to have a little check tho, il take both your advise and leave then as they are then
I knew some would bring that up, i took the standard cold air intake of the air box, so i thought drilling some holes would help air flow (but it didnt ) i thought id test before i fitted the new grill, ( which i fitted today, no pics tho)
-
Couple of things i managed to get done today....
....removed what mud flaps were left , and removed the side skirts as they had trim missing off them and looked taty so rather than spending money i just got rid!
...sprayed (matt black) and fitted a smooth grill, just need to spray the gti grill badge. (no pic)
Unwanted skirt

-
Have you only removed the top part of the side skirts?
-
Have you only removed the top part of the side skirts?
No the bit your on about was already missing thats what prompted me to remove the rest. Theres a thin metal strip/clip still on the seal that the skirt clips into, but i thought id leave that on for the time being just incase i change my mind, once its sprayed i dont think it'l be very noticable, if i 100% decide to keep the skirts off then il remove the strip/clip too.
i think it looks ok, it enhances the wheel arches too, will hope to give it a clean, spray the seals and get some better pics up over the next couple of days.
-
Clean pics  here she is in all her (working) glory

How easy is it to remove the wing mirror covers?? dont want to break them.
not the most exciting project, but its a bit different from when i bought her, perfect for scooting around in!
-
They're pretty east to remove when you know how, turn the glass allthe way inwards and you should be able to see inside the mirror and you should be able to see the back of the cover and there's about 4 pairs of clips that need to be pushed together to pop the cover off. I broke the first cover I took off coz I didn't realise this so take care when doing it
Nice motor though mate

Cheers bud, liking the spray booth! How did you get the black to fade like that, looks mint! Dont worry, I wont be a trademark thief! Just curious. Think I'm gonna play it safe with a gloss black. All though I was thinking of going white wheels with clear indicators, fogs and repeaters to go with my rears, but I cant do that now thanks to you!!
-
Cheers guys, the booth works thats the main thing...
... as for the wheels, i masked up the wheel just leaving once spoke open, sprayed it black (2-3coats) allowed to dry removed tape, lightly rub the edge with 2000 wet n dry and just lightly feathered in the edge with white, sprayed on (2-3 coats) of clear... bobs your uncle   (first time ive done this)
seanl... crack on with the white wheels, clear indicators etc, seen as its my girlfriends car thats not a veedub then it doesnt count
Im going for ford Panther Black on my wheels, love that colour! with some sort of fade trick

Glad im not the only that suffers from this...
ive decided the only way im going to 'mod' my car is to do it on a 'pocket money' budget, really need to save
on the exception of when things 'need' doing tryes, brakes, services etc
-
Apart from going to the park, going for a pub lunch, visiting customers and spraying the subaru wheels, i still managed to 'a' job done on the golf :

-
Yeee Hawwww!!!
-
wel this afternoon i went out to the car and gave the rear bumper a good old fashion kicking, no filler dropped out so i slapped another layer on the rear, and a first layer on the front.

COULD stay there if preped and applied VERY well but slight nudge and it will go.
Most of the time though, you're right it will just crack after time.

Maybe, but like i said ive given it a good testing  il think of something else if it does happen :smug:

Fibreglass paste is actually not that bad at taking road use, but cracks as soon as you bend the bumper.
Plastic welding isn't too hard though!

Yeah but filler is more flexible then fibreglass. ;)

ok...
not much of an update, bumpers are going well all be it slow,
treated the car to some new plugs, air filter, rotary arm and dizzy cap, all fitted & running nicely
-
Update, finaly making progress with the rear bumper, removed the rear bumper this morning. glad to report there was no nasty supprises for me, last spread of filler, grinded down, primerd, and painted satin matt black (not bad for a mornings work). bumper isnt perfect at the mo just needs going over with some 800-1500 wet n dry, fresh top coat and itl be spot on  or just get some rat-llok stickers and leave it
While the bumper was off, gave the rear of the car a damb good clean, painted the rear towing eye, there was some paint missing (size of a 50p) where the previous owner reversed into a lamp post (or something ) so i just brushed on some hammerite to protect it.

Ok, yes iam still working on the bumpers but yes i am easily distracted
Recieved a bomb looking package today, only to realise it was some yellow tint from 'LL'. Really good stuff!!
Anyway, off came the grill and headlights, removed the little metal clips and off came the glass lense with no trouble, removed excess glue from the lense and gave it a clean with soapy water and newspaper  GLEAMING
Layed the tint onto the lense removed air bubbles and the cut out a circle, in line with full beam.

Bumper looks great, good job... :afro: I'm not too sure on the wee in your headlights but I think it would work much better with a bit of joey modding to separate the two parts of the units more clearly.
-
Thanks mate, they are getting there!
i know not many people will like the yellow but i love it! i thought about the joey mod but i think thatd be to much with the yellow.
QUICK TIP, instead of upgrading your headlight bulbs, strip down headlight and clean lense inside and out, i cant beleave how bright my lights are now!
something else has popped up now, a 15" mountney steering wheel, quite fancy it tbh!

Loving those indicators!
What have you been using to fill the bumpers?
-
This is looking awesome!
-
Thanks for the comments guys, glad my  ideas are going down well:
as for the headlights, im not to sure i think it might be over doing it, bur il decide after ive finished spraying her...
i had to so something different with the indicators, it was the only thing i could come up with ...
as for the bumpers its just body filler, i know i know it'l crack, when it does ive got builders chalk waiting to fill the crack, both flexable and paintable
Going to collect my boss in the morning from the post office, v.excited

it 'was' 85mm pcd, but ive taken i back to the seller and got a full refund, ive got the mountney boss, so il treat myself to a wooden or other mountney steering wheel to fit it!

Small but expensive update...
went to my favourite tyre shop on tuesday, i was hopping to get some toyos wrapped round my wheels but i left it to late and needed what every tyres they had.
Was running budget 205/50 15 all round, and i left with 2 new uniroyals 195/50 15 on the front and an unexpected budget 205/50 15 on the rear. the grip is out of this world and being smaller on the front steering is a beaut!
With what change i had left i bought a can of satin matt black and went to work on my bonnet, still needs another coat mind you.

Inbetween faffing about with spray cans and what every else i decide to do, over the next month or so the front is having some work, if all goes to plan:
- new steering rack
- Disks and pads
- braided brakes hoses
- cv gaitors
- and i think the clutch is on the way out to  might be able to squeeze a lightened flywheel in there too, depends on timing and budget!
-
Some good news i dont think clutch is on its way out, think it just needs adjusting 'fingers crossed'.
That aside i went for a great drive down to Brighton on good friday, gearbox started to make like a warn bearing noise, got home checked oil ws a little low but not much, going to maldon prom today with is about an hour drive from me so will find out if the oil top up does the trick.
Managed to get some spraying done Easter sunday:

Cleaned with brake cleaner, and mr sheen to finish
On a good note, i think the noise i thought was my gearbox might have been my air box as it wasnt located in the wing properly

Weekend was nearly spoiled before it started...
thursday night collecting money from customers and my car decided to break down on me. two thoughts went through my head, coil or speed sensor...
had a look at the speed sensor and it 'looked' fine, so took the easier and cheeper route and replaced the coil, luckerly euro parts dont beleave in days off  so managed to buy and fit the new coil on friday(bank holiday)!
thankfuly the coil was the problem, started up first time, now drives like a beaut!!
Hopefuly will get a box of satin black rattle cans this week and get the car finished

Other than the Gti badge in the middle of the grill I think it looks awesome
Needs lows though :lipsrsealed:
-
Good work mate the finish looks good
-
looking good dude yh move that gti badge!
-
Suspension and GTI badge have gotta go fella.
-
Thanks guys, im very pleased with the outcome...
badge is in the middle because for somereason it wont fit to the side, needs a little alteration, i think it looks ok. (different)
as for the lows i cant really go any lower, i already hit the splitter on customers drives, and one (mud) road i go down the underneath takes a beating. i might go down 40mm in the future, but i wont be doing anything till suspension needs replacing
Thanks again
-
Surely that hasn't already been lowered?
-
Surely that hasn't already been lowered?
Looks standard height to me :undecided:
-
It sits higher than mine and i have cl suspension
-
That's what i thought, my standard suspension was never that high and it never scrapped anywhere...even at speed over humps etc.
-
as far as i know its standard hight, doesnt help that the arches have benn removed makes the arch gap bigger

Updates (no pics)
Rack is fitted!! after removing the fitting arms from the rack, i managed to use the brackets to mount the desmo onto the current one with no trouble at all!
Fitted the rack combo to the car, put the ladders on and... :embarassed: to 1st and 6th bars (sit higher than other 4) bowed. i had 2 choices:
1- remove the desmo rack and just fit it for shows
2- remove the 1st and 6th bar from the desmo rack
i opted for #2, as the desmo rack is like flat pack furniture it all comes apart, only 1 of the 4 screws rounded off, so after some drilling and some all helping swearing, the bars where off!
Went to work today, no probs with it at all so im very happy, will get some pics hopefuly on sunday @ vw battlesbridge show. (cameras being a twit at the moment.
i have also added some more vinyl

The cars been pretty sound all in all, just a small problem not sure if its, MAF, exhaust, or ht lead...will get it sorted soon
Im also getting married in February next year so im holding onto every last penny i can, even gone down from V-power to regular fuel
-
Headlining looks great! Congrats on getting married mate.
-
Loving the car mate! You should definitely joey mod the headlights :) and i reconcile you should paint the wheels blue to match the badges!
-
Thanks guys,
the wheels are staying black, will end up ford panther black at some point in the new year if I keep them...all the blue badges are slowly going, it looks to 'got-at'....and no not going down the joey road, want to stay different, but thanks all the same...
main concern at the moment is paying for road tax and getting it running right again
-
ha this looks cool mate
how did you stick the headliner down? any issues with it sagging etc ??
-

-
Hi all,
As some of you know my car (MK3 GTI 8V) hasn't been running to healthy recently, but after a bit of head scratching, autodata reading and some multimeter probing  I've managed to find the fault...temp sender or (ECT) Engione coolant sensor as is says in the auto data book...
Autodata: 80*C - 325ohms
Mine: 80*C - 149ohms
I wanted to know once I've changed sensor do you need to reset the ECU? disconnect the battery? remove Fuse? or is it a simple swap over and let it sort its self out???..
Thought id post it here too... so the cat wasn't the problem, but hey its let out some more ponies in the process and it was free ...hopefully will get the new temp sender later this week....
-
Oh well still haven't got my new sender, Christmas is draining all of my funds
Found these pics from the summer:

I have finally FINALLY bought a new temp sender, made a big difference to how she drives, much smoother and better MPG...
another problem has revealed itself (to be honest I thought the temp sender would or solved this), when I first start the engine she wont idle, just stalls, so I have to hold the revs for about a minute before she idles nicely...and...if she does stall it struggles to start again, is it me or does this sound like a coil...AGAIN?
Old

any comments or suggestions on the poor idle?
-
 Reminds me of

Not sure what your idle issue is but I doubt it's your coil... Have you checked that it has a healthy spark?

Almost like twins
I think the sparks fine as it runs ok apart from the initial start, been having a little think :nerd: over the course of the day and Im going to clean out the ISV in the morning see if that helps...
-
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Well I took the ISV cleaned the throttle body AGAIN, turned it over and still didn't idle
basically got the ump with it, so just unplugged it crossed my fingers and toes and turned it over...she now idles all be it about 500rpm
will run it for as long as I can like this...is there away of permanently bypassing this?
One thing I noticed, was the vacuum pipe, that goes from the inlet manifold to the brake master cylinder is rock hard, should it be like this, or is it time to replace it??
-
Oh well still not much going on here even tho theres lots to do...but I am skint.
Gave the car a wash this morning, well I say wash just drentched the bottom half of the car, inc wheels, and in the arches, and the glass with TFR and rinsed it off with the pressure washer, dried the glass but left the body to air dry (good thing about having weathershield paint :smug:).
Removed the 'drift buddie' from the toe eye and some stickers off the rear screen so the car is looking a little tidier now
-
Oh well thats the thanks I get for giving her a wash!
having real trouble selecting 2nd gear, other gears are fine and the clutch is not slipping so suspect its to do with the gear linkage...
I've heard linkage kits been mentioned before, anyone know what comes in the kit and how hard is it to replace??
the other problem could be classed as a 'driver error', bombing down the A13 this morning pulled in to fill up with petrol and thought "whats that smell"? looked down and it was my rear offside brake was smoking, pulled the hand brake on and off a couple of times before carrying on with my journey...doesn't seem to have got hot again so perhaps the handbrake must of been slightly on  will keep and eye on it tho
-
That was a bit silly mate! I got a linkage kit off tierod69 on eBay, was about £22 including delivery iirc. Kit includes shift rod, plastic coupler, and bushes. Actually made mine worse to start with as it needed precise adjustment to get everything working properly in the end. Worth a shot though, or a gear oil replacement if that's no good.
-
If you intend on installing a linkage kit then its also advisable to buy an alignment tool as well, they cost about £7/8 on eBay and make setting the linkage correctly a doddle.
-
Thanks guys,
hopefully get I'l get to the dealership today and get those bits ordered, will they sell the alignment tool??
Will get a set of plugs whilst I'm there
Updates to come....
-
I'm not sure tbh, I know you can get linkage kits and alignment tools on eGay for little money though.
-
PM benrevs too as he fabricates the balljoint type thing that the gearstick pivots on I think. He only charges a few quid for it, and it tightens up the movement of the stick when selecting gear/when in gear.
-
Thanks guys...
I managed to find the ebay shop regarding the kit, thanks seanl, but thought id check the VW first...
you cant buy them as a kit from the VW but I just bought everything that was needed to do the job, came in about £16 which is cheaper than the ebay shop and I get to collect it later today so result all round...
as for the tool, no-one seems to sell it, didnt want to wait on delivery from ebay, VW said they can't sell tools from the parts depo any more but to email tools.equipment@vwg.co.uk, but I'm just going to get the missus to sit in the car and test the gear stick as I adjust it.
If all goes well with work, I should be attempting the gear linkage Thursday daytime, and I've ordered some new plugs, and they'l go on tonight.
Thanks again guys....updates end of the week, fingers crossed

PM benrevs too as he fabricates the balljoint type thing that the gearstick pivots on I think. He only charges a few quid for it, and it tightens up the movement of the stick when selecting gear/when in gear.
Ok, is that underneath the gear stick? thanks

So...I went to VW this afternoon to collect my bushes and selectors, and cut a long story short they didn't order all the bushes on the illustration, don't know if the bloke wasn't listening or just didn't give sh*t but I had to order the remaining bushes and should be in for me to pick up tomorrow. I blame the missus as it was her idea to order the parts over the phone in the first place ...never again!
Turns out it hasn't worked put cheaper as in the kit on ebay you get more bits http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220790646982?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648#ht_2056wt_1037
What I collected today:

All I'l be adding one bush a couple or R-clips and 4 rubber/plastic washers to that tomorrow
-
Went to VW again today, been my second home the past few days, but anyway...got my extra bits that was missing and had to swap my plugs over as they gave me the wrong bloody ones...idiots
Fitted my new plugs earlier this evening not forgetting the Wd40 and copper slip, I love my miners torch, took for a test drive feels much better as you would expect. will be cracking on with the Selector in the morning after the school run.

wahoo!!! I can change gear
Well as you can tell I managed to get the bushes and link arms fitted with not much dramas, gave the relay arm an inspection whilst it was off, could do with replacing but it'l do for now.
Fitted

Thanks mate, I've just changed the wording on the home page...its free for the first month, then £2.99 per month plus VAT for a basic 3 page site, you can upgrade and get paypal set up on it get a better domain name etc...but the price goes up and up...I've been meaning to do it for for the past 2 or so years so thought I'd just get one done.
The only problem with the basic site, search engines don't really find them, so you need to put your web address about abit...
-
Sounds pretty good :) I'll have to look into it!
-
Now I've got my little website up and going I thought it would be a good idea to get some vinyl for the car, seen as I had the day off today thought it was the perfect time to do so:
Also removed the Dubs n Suds vinyl as it could get confusing

Nothing to report on the GTI as I'm still skint...paid my tax return today  so that's one less financial burden to worry about
Anyway did a 'free' job on the missus Imprezza today...she doesn't use it much and the amp just drains the battery, I got fed up with having to keep removing the battery and charging it I decided to fit a cut-off switch between the battery and the amp. :smug:
I found the best place it fit the switch was on the passenger side kick panel (pic01), I bought some battery lead terminal fittings but didn't realise that the bloody things were so hard to crimp  so i dusted of my brake line tool, and used that to crimp the fitting (pic02) and (pic03). All seemed to fitted ok so put it all back together and gave a little hoover (pic04).

Yeah, I need to remember that man!

Am I correct in thinking the Amp should turn off when the head unit is turned off??
So have I waisted my time fitting a kill switch on the missus car?
If so what have I done wrong?
I will be re-routing the audio wiring on the Golf and upgrading the speaker wire so it will be a good idea to do it right this time...
comments and suggestions please...
-
Blue signal wire on the headunit should tell the amp to turn off when the HU is off.
What HU is it? Alpine?

The HU is a Kenwood...old one tho, if that makes any difference, my missus HU is a JVC.
-
The reason I ask is I encountered an Alpine at work recently with two signal wires. One which stayed on even with the radio off. Might be worth a look

ok mate....well I'm not cleaning many windows this week so I'l remove the HU and have a look, I'm not worried about the missus car as the kill switch is doing the job, but I'd like to try and do mine right!
-
So I discovered I made another amateur mistake by wrapping the RCA leads and the Amp remote wire with the live wire....so Today I removed the RCA and Amp remote wire so now the live wire is laying on its own...just need to trim it as there is a bit to much excess.
So that's one thing off the list, I then found the Amp remote was going to a red wire, don't ask why, but I'l find out which one its suppose to go to when I re-fit the RCA leads and Remote wire, going to run these wires down the drivers side as the live wire is down the passengers side.
I've found some thickish speaker wire so I'm going to be using that between the Amp and the 6x9's that have replaced the standard speakers in the rear door cards.
Here's a idea of how its going to be wired up, I want to solder the wires this time so any tips on that would be great.
From the Head unit I'l have:
Standard wire and speakers in the top of the dash.
Standard wire and speakers in front door cards.
Standard wire and tweeters in the rear door cards.
From the Amp:
Decent wire and 6x9's in rear door cards.
if anyone can suggest otherwise with out spending then I'm all ears
-
Ok so the long and short of it is that I am going to continue with the set up I've got now, with the addition of decent wire and permanently mount the 6x9s in the door cards (as they were only temperately fitted).
Turns out I only have enough decent wire to wire in the 6x9s so the rest will have to stay stock for now.
But in removing door cards etc etc I've noticed how grubby the car is, so I think a deep clean coming up.
Questions regarding central locking to follow :undecided:
-
Ok so a while ago I had a problem with central locking motor continuing to run after the car was locked and un-locked, resulting in a flat battery.
So the short term fix was to unplug it, which I did, but its getting on my tits now that I have to lean over to passenger door and all this soding about with door cards and kick panels I've seen where the air pipes go...so I have 2 options...
1> find out the cause of the running motor maybe split hose?
2> rip the central locking system out and fit dead locks that I've got laying about in the shed.
What do you all think? I like the laziness of central locking but also love the simplicity of dead locks...
-
Thought its about time I did a list, not a wish list but a job list...all the things I need to do before I think of any vanity jobs:
Engine
Oil and Oil Filter
Air Filter
Cabin Filter
Plugs
HT leads
Dizzy and rotor arm
Coil
Earth Strap
All new exhaust gaskets and fittings
Replace the some of the gear linkages
Gearbox Oil change
Outer CV Joints
Front Disks and Pads
Steering Rack set up right
2 tyres
Interior
New Bolts to hold the bottom of the rear seats in.
Re-fit Speakers and wires
Fix Central Locking
Fix Electric Window (before the summer)
Exterior
Paint Boot Lid
Re-fit Rear Wiper
Fit New Horn
I am going to try and replace all the above with genuine parts or uprated
-
Just reading your comments about your amp staying on Stow. Usually the signal wire for the amp is a blue one out of the back of the head unit. The amp should only power on when your head unit powers up.
I would chase up the problem with the central locking pump to start off with, just because like you I am lazy and hate having to lean across/back and unlock doors!
-

Thanks mate, will be getting those two jobs sorted asap...as for unlocking doors, I only have to unlock 1
-
Well the good thing about having a 'job' list it keeps me focused on what I need to be doing, instead of drifting off into dream land...
My current tyre set up is:
Front: Uniroyal's Rain tyre 195/50R15
Rear: Budgets sh*t 205/50R15 which one has got a slow puncture
So I've got a pair of Toyo Proxes T1-R 195/50R15's available to collect on the 17th March for a fair price, so am thinking putting the Toyo's on the front and Uniroyal's on the rear.
Comments suggestions?
-
T1r's are a good choice.
Recently put some on my fronts. Can now pull away from wet roundabouts without a tonne of wheelspin!

I'l wack them on the front then

And I rate highly the Uniroyal Rainsport, having stuck a set on mine. Car doesn't scrabble for grip in the wet or feel like its washing out on cornering much any more.

Yeah I love the Uniroyals, only got them cause that was all the tyre shop had at the time but I wouldn't think twice about getting them again!

Yeah apparently its the another of "one of the best days of your life". Was one of the most stressful of mine! Speeches and dances didn't bother me, it was the running about like a twit making sure everything was ok in the hours leading up to it that got me! Its the same as child birth, I NEVER EVER want to witness that again! Most beautiful thing in the world, MY ARSE!!!

No for sure it was the best day of my life, with the exception of the speech, I hate giving speeches...I didn't find any other part of the day a stress, everything seemed to work out as planned.
Not saying I want to do it again tho ...got myself a cracker

Well I found out the hard way that you shouldn't drink and drive...Now I'm not talking a few Bottles of Corona I'm talking about half a cup of Lucozade!!
Somehow I managed to drop it behind the steering wheel and on the dash, It went every where... so I had to rush home whilst Lucozade was dripping onto my legs....
So as you can imagine I spent the rest of the afternoon taking the car apart to try and get it all cleaned up!
Something missing?

I got there base of the seat cleaned up so the next time I sat on it I didn't stick to it  Got the seat, Clocks and headlight switch back in, didn't have time to clean the rest...went for a drive this evening and found only the rev counter lights up not the speedo and and my indicators only work when the choose to!
I wanted to spend some more time on the car but I didn't have this planned!

Bloody hell, its gonna be 30 years before that list is complete!
Glad one thing is sorted, but lucky nothing shorted around the ignition causing an even longer list for you!
-
I was thinking more 40years
Seen as the dash is in pieces and not all the dials and light up, seems a good time to change the bulbs for some LED's...any idea where I can get the 501t LED's?
I've tried Google but I haven't got a clue what I'm looking for!
-
ebay ftmfw

I got em from ebay last time. Cheap as chips, they're just twist fit mate have a look at the ones that are in your car atm to see.
-
I seeeeee....
Don't know where I got 501 from,
<<twit!
Will crack on get these ordered!
-
Got 4x509t LED's on there way!
-
Got some cleaning done today...
Cleaned all the behind the steering wheel, indicator/wiper stalks, steering wheel and gear stick gaiter with brake cleaner and gave it all some leather cream treatment...and now the indicators work as they should, for now anyway!
...and got the car booked in for Monday 12th for new CV Joint(s) and get the Steering Rack aligned!
Hopefully the rain will Pi$$ off tomorrow so I can get some work done!
-
Got a nice little package in the post this morning...4xLED's....
got them fitted asap, removed the green filter from the top, but I didn't have a small enough torque screw piece so didn't manage to get the filter's off the screens!
anyway I went for Red LED's behind the MFA screens, and Blue LED's at the top...could do with a few extra LED's and I like the idea of the mk4 illuminated needles but that can wait...
Very, very, very cr*p picture I'm afraid but thought something was better than nothing

Glad this little episode is over (hopefully) so I can get back to the jobs on the actual list

Well its been a good day for the workhorse today!
Took her into the garage this morning for the CV joint and Steering Rack, and thought might as well book it for an oil change too, got a call this evening so say it will be ready for collecting tomorrow morning and they've fitted from Disks & Pads!
Were's that list!
-
Thought its about time I did a list, not a wish list but a job list...all the things I need to do before I think of any vanity jobs:
Engine
Oil and Oil Filter
Air Filter
Cabin Filter
Plugs
HT leads
Dizzy and rotor arm
Coil
Earth Strap
All new exhaust gaskets and fittings
Replace the some of the gear linkages
Gearbox Oil change
Outer CV Joint
Front Disks and Pads
Steering Rack set up right
2 tyres
Interior
New Bolts to hold the bottom of the rear seats in.
Re-fit Speakers and wires
Fix Central Locking
Fix Electric Window (before the summer)
Exterior
Paint Boot Lid
Re-fit Rear Wiper
Fit New Horn
I am going to try and replace all the above with genuine parts or uprated (or not)
-
Had a bit of good news on collecting the car, I thought I was getting cheap disks and pads (as I didn't book it in for that, but my disk was cracked) but have been fitted with Lockeed dicks and Ferodo pads...happy with that!
Car drives smoother and in a straight line now, and also stops which is always useful!
Fingers crossed will be picking up my tyres at the weekend!
-
I thought this car was gonna get run until dead, then scrapped at one point mate. Glad your cracking on with all the bits that need doing now though. MOT due sometime soon I take it!?
-

It came close mate!
Yeah I feel so much better knowing jobs are getting done and a lot happier with the car in general! Still a long way to go...
MOT's due in.......June I think!
-
Yeah its always time to begin panicing a couple of months before its due! My MOT is next Tuesday, but fingers crossed its only cost me what I've found that needs doing, which cost about £60. Will wait and see though. :undecided:

That's right, I thought if I don't start now I wont be able to afford to do it all in one hit!
Good luck with the MOT!
-
Finally got a pair of these!!!
Will be fitted asap!
-
Well still haven't got the Toyo's fitted, no excuse really just been really busy at work...
had two plans for the car to day..
1> remove centre console for a through clean
2> refit the RCA wire so I can put my dash back together after my lucozade incident
Number 1 went ok, but had to remove front seats to do so
(http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/525990_397233500287219_100000017160101_1562610_251917683_n.jpg)
But...then got carried away and ended up doing this
(http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/564315_397233426953893_100000017160101_1562609_2054925288_n.jpg)
as you can see the carpets are  so they need a good clean before refitting, all the underlay weighs a ton!! and I know the G3's are known as tugs but sandbags is taking the pi$$!!
This is how the car looks tonight after a little sweep up...
So hopefully next task is to fit the RCA, and put the dash back together!
p.s. not forgetting the tyres
-
Fook it.. if you've got sand bags for sound proofing, bin it.
-
Well at least its pretty clean under there. Nothing worse than lifting your carpets to see rust round drain holes, or even worse the road!
-

I'm using them to prop open the shed door

Yeah very pleased, I've been happy with the overall condition of this car
-
Finally got round to fitting the RCA wire...cleaned and refitted most of the dash...
Took the head-unit out so I could feed the RCA through and spotted the little bit of blue wire coming out the back of the head-unit..
what is it? (please don't say amp remote)
on a side not I quite liked not having any carpets in the car, it wasn't any noisier than normal as the ladders make all the noise on the roof.
Seems like the hazard light switch has got some perminant damage
I would really love to get the fuse box and relays moved somewhere more accessible as under the dash is and F-ing b*tch!
-
Ok so turns out the blue wire is the Amp remote so hopefuly will be long enough to get a connector on it or I'l have to solder some more wire on...
On a 'fresher' note thought I'd change a few visual bits this morning...see if you can 'spot the difference'
and a few shots from the family bike ride...

Just in case you didn't notice apart from the stickers removed rear sign writing removed...
before:

really like the amber indicators, I also want the ones for the front bumper now
The hazard tape has been removed since the photos so the car is looking plain...but better!!
-
NEW VW Coil Pack fitted this evening...driving better still could do with new dizzy, rotary, ht leads and plugs but its a start
Toyos are in my boot should be getting them fitted tomorrow for £20
-
This is a very different mk3 but i like it
-
This is a very different mk3 but i like it
Thanks mate, wanted to create something different with in a bugger all budget
-
Toyo's fitted!!!!
Front - 195/50 R15 Toyo Proxes
Rear - 195/50 R15 UniRoyal Rain tyres
Nice balance to the car now...
Had a little look under the arches whist the wheels were off, noting 'major' to report:
> slight split in the nearside CV gaiter
> off side rear shock absorber looks a bit worse for ware
So new gaiter will be purchased on my next visit to VW, and I need to start doing some homework on rear shocks
First thoughts are:
> VW GTI or VW VR6 (if there's any difference)
> Bilstein B6 Sports Dampers
anyone want to point me in the right direction? is it worth changing anything else at the same time? top mounts?
Comment and suggestions as always guys
-
Bilstein shocks without doubt.

That was easy then

Hmm, I swear I saw you on the motorway the other day! No idea which one mind...

Yeah that was me! Since then I've taken off the headlights for standard ones and changed the wheels.
Nice car man. Always wanted to matt black my golf.

Thanks mate appreciate that...
Full yellow tinted lights don't work on Golfs, headlights are to big really...not to keen on the yellow fogs/reflectors either mate, sorry
I love Matt black, this is my second matt black car, and my missus drives a matt black car too...
-
I'm not too keen on the reflectors either, just had them done that day. Probably gonna take the lamin-x off.
Haha awesome, plan on doing mine at some point.
-

If I remember right, your low, rolling on steelies yes?
If so...Id matt black it, paint the wheels with red-oxide primer and then clear coat them, with white walls....hello golf-rod
but that's just me
-
Nothing exciting to mention at the mo, apart from I love the way this thing handles now..amazing what a set of tyres can do
Bilstein shocks on the rear is a defo now...just a matter of when now...
other than that gave the glass a clean, polish and protection...looking forward to Elemintal on Saturday now
-
An unexpected update this evening...
whilst at work I looked at my car from a far and thought..
"that looks good"..."apart from the Desmo rack"
so after dinner the Desmo rack was removed and then thought it'd be rude not to continue for a few hours...
after removing the rear VW badge, number plate, Golf badge gave it a rub down with a 3M pad, masked up the rear screen and tail lights and got rolling...one thing I love about weathershield paint is it dry's so fast, so by the time I rolled over where the hazard tape used to be on the front/rear bumpers the bootlid was dry so was able to get plate back on, badges will be sprayed before re-fitting...
now..."that looks good"
-
Elemental came up Trumps again....
Great event and managed to pick up a set of what look like brand new...Hella Rear CL light clusters...these are going to make a nice contrast against the matt black...
oh did I mention I have a leak in my rad FFS
-
CL rears should look good, I too had a duff rad on the golf mate, Pretty simple to change if you dont have A/C, otherwise its a PITA getting it in behind the A/C rad!
-
Seems simple enough, how long do you think it will take?? and no I don't have AC thank f***, want to change the Coolant bottle to as its looking a bit sad for itself...
I'm hoping they will look as good as I imagine they will...
-
Shouldnt take longer than a couple of hours or so including filling back up and bleeding the system. if you drain it the night before, and give the expansion a good scrub with a kiddies bottle brush, then stick it in a bowl of boiling water with loads of bleach over night, making sure its submerged, give it a good scrub again and rinse in the morning, and it comes out very well! Obviously not like new as you cant get the brush to the edges, but you will be able to see what coloour your coolant is again!

Sounds like a lot of hard work...lol...I might have to do this tho, depends on available was when the time comes

CL Rear lights fitted...

...much better IMO.
-
We just like everything in the thread, something else not going to plan!!
Got pulled over the other day for a 'routine' check, as you would expect there was no problems, but got me thinking "when's my MOT due?"
End of May so I have booked an MOT for 19th...bits to sort before MOT:
> Exhaust gaskets
> Plugs
> CV gaiter...
but aside from that, been having trouble starting my car the past few days, first thought was the battery, bench checked it and its holding 12V which is enough, put it back on the car ran the engine and rev'd it, but the Volts did not increase so the alternator isn't charging the battery, quick phone call to local spares shop...my wallet is now lighter, a new alternator is in my boot...
Will fit this tomorrow...
-

Lights look good Stow and I know the feeling when talking about wallet getting lighter mines nearly empty  good luck with the MOT mate sure it will fly through
-
What part of the exhaust needs a new gasket? You can replace the pea shooter backbox at the same time. :lipsrsealed:

Manifold and flange gaskets...I like my pea shooter, its hides the amount of 'power' she's got! In all truth I will change it when it needs to be...
-
Just shy of 2 hours of wet conditions and then new alternator is fitted and tested....
wasn't plain sailing mind...
the fact that I haven't done this before, Haynes manual wasn't much help and couldn't find a guide on here,
checked the battery again this morning just in case it needed charging, showed 12V (which is ok), disconnected the battery and wire's off the back of the alternator...
removed top mounting bolt from the alternator and went looking for the lower...
took all the inner arch liner off, and the plastic splash cover for the pulleys, to find the lower mounting bolt missing and another bolt which I think is for the water pump loose! tightened the loose bolt and went back to the engine bay...
Pushed down on the alternator to compress the tension spring whipped the belt off (wasn't as easy as that because some drip 'removed' the top bolt)...
did the reverse too all above to fit the new alternator...
-
Well what I can I say, had a week of different emotions towards this car...
getting rather fed up with all the things that need replacing, came close on 3 occasions to buying another car and sending this to metal heaven!
but on the upside if I managed to replace the parts that need it, to the parts that I want then I know I'd be happy with it, but that is a big ask from my point of view...
-
So with my head straight I took a trip to the dealer this week, and collected my parts this morning
I'l list the parts as I fit them...fitted in the dealer car park was:
056 129 777 - 2x green vacuum plugs (vacuum pipe than comes off the inlet) £1.58 +Vat
it has made the engine run alot smoother, so Im already smiling
-
Wow... its been along time
Don't think I've done much since May!
Mainly just keeping her going, wired up speakers, amp and sub....and added some Rat-look rust
Will post some pics up when I figure this tablet out...

all up to date

Cars looking cool stow with your own very personal touches mate
-
Cheers blu...
-
Well catching up with alot of projects on her has given my a very small kick up the rear end...
nothing to fancy as you've come to expect from this thread, but I've fitted my kick pannels back that have been missing since last summer, gave it a thorough wash to get rid of all the salt and grime from the snow, gave the lights and glass a polish a treatment (sorry but theres nothing else to polish)
just getting my thinking cap on now as to what to do next, still going with the philosohpy if its not broke don't fix it.
Altho just this evening I have enquired about some flocking

-

Thanks. was kind of the idea

How do you find the squeegee on the poles?
Some like it and have taken pictures, others think I'm nuts, but the bottom line is I'm good at cleaning the windows although I don't want to chance doing an all over rust job and offending people...
Squeegee on the pole is easy when you've got the hang of it, why do you ask?

As it rained this morning I got onto removing the parts that are getting flocked, will be taking a drive down the A127 tomorrow morning to drop them off.

Flocking update....
had some pictures come my way via Facebook, looks like my parts are coming along nicely (will post pics)
should be ready for the weekend so look forward to collecting them.
Thought it would be a good idea to paint the floor pan before I get the center consol back, Monday I removed the passenger seat, cleaned and keyed the passenger floor pan, front and rear, gave it a going over with my trusted matt black, left over night and refitted seat. did the same to the drivers side this evening and will fit seat back in the morning.

Comments welcome as always...

That is going to look so cool fella nice work, love the mk3 holding the ladder for you
-
Little tip to save so much time and frustration when the ladder clamps get bent is get some threaded bar or studding and bolt it through the roofrack. Then the ladder just goes on the rack and you just spin the top of the clamps on.
-

I'll get a picture of the ladder on whenever I use it next. Such a time saver!
-
That flocking looks amazing, like that a lot!!

Thanks...should finally have a continuing theme going through the car...she helps me, and I spend money on her, sounds like a marridge

interesting...altho spinning the top on and off could be a pain in the rear end too...I might (might) be putting the desmo rack back on, if so the I only need straps to hold the ladder on...much quicker!
ps...are you a secret window cleaner?
-
flocking looks the bollox mate, might have to give that fella a bell myself! care to divulge what sort of dough you had to spend?

Thankyou very much for the positive review Marc, really appreciate it!
The sticker bomb contrast to the Matt velvet look of the flock is awesome!

Little tip to save so much time and frustration when the ladder clamps get bent is get some threaded bar or studding and bolt it through the roofrack. Then the ladder just goes on the rack and you just spin the top of the clamps on.
interesting...altho spinning the top on and off could be a pain in the rear end too...I might (might) be putting the desmo rack back on, if so the I only need straps to hold the ladder on...much quicker!
ps...are you a secret window cleaner?
I've personally never found an issue and me and my mate always said it was the best thing ever done on the car.
What's the difference with the Denso rack then?
Yeah mate just sold a huge round. Had a water fed pole set up in the back of the MK4. was awesome. Now just got a small round whoch pays the bills. 4 days a month or 3 long days. Pays car insurance, phone and MOT tax etc.
The thought in the morning of getting up and doing it is so hard but after im out and doing it trad I just crack on.
Flocking looks awesome bud! Is it expensive to have done?

Desmo rack is like a cage, so it gives the ladder something to but up against.
Got any pics of your water fed poll set up...i've been uming and ering about it for years. but I would like to do a water fed poll boot build.
I don't think its expensive, compared towhat other people do on here.
Good to know of a fellow tradesman on here

Okay I see. Sounds good.
Here's my version of your photo.

I have a couple of minor ones. We had outlets on the bumper:

The tank was in the boot:

Didn't have many pictures for some reason. Had the pump in the spare wheel well and the controller just behind the tank so was right there as you opened the boot. We just kept the space saver strapped beside the tank.
Worked absolutely fine and not a single leak. Had a false floor along the whole stretch including where the rear sests were. We used s crap hose reel though just to start. Never once let us down or leaked though!

Oh mate I love it
How many jobs can you get out of tank that big?
That what I was thinking, putting pump in spare wheel well, was going to mount the hose reel on the boot and relocate the number plate to the roof rack.
Do you produce your own water or buy it?

Very happy with the outcome, has a nice feeling sitting inside there now...bit slow on the progress front, but here's up to date pics:
