Wheel Arch or spare wheel build?
« on: 02 April 2008, 13:47 »
I am looking to build a sub enclosure in the boot of my MkII but cant decide between the rear wheel arch or a spare wheel well build.  What are the thoughts on this.

Also, where is the best (for best, read cheapest) place to get the glass fibre matting and resins.

Cheers

Scott

Wheel well is easiest but loses you boot space and usability.

Wheel arch is harder to do but leaves boot clear.

Halfords large repair kit as you get gloves and pot/stirrer.

I did an arch build in my MKV. The fibre-glass and resin packs were the biggest outlay as I just bought them from Halfords. All-in-all it cost around £100 for all the stuff.

I would have thought that the arch in the MKII is much smaller than the MKV and that the wheel well is for a full size tyre in the MKII, so I'd probably opt for the well rather than the arch. Same principle though.

cheers for the info, the write up has helped no-end.  Think I am going to go for the Wheel arch, think it just looks more robust than having the sub in the spare wheel well.  How does the box perform?  do you get a good sound from it.

I guess you could fill it with water once you have the basic tub, that should give you the volume and adjust it from there to get the exact amount.

are these good prices for matting and resin?  http://www.polyfibre.co.uk/

From my surfboard making days I'd say those prices are very good.

Good find mate!

Any ideas which bits/parts/quantities I would need to make the box.

Len,  What type and how much gear did you use?

Ta,
