I am close to buying a  2007 Mk5 GTI. It is a VW demo or company car fitted with the earlier Sat Nav(MFD2). How good is this unit? Is it possible to upgrade to the RNS510 from the recommended seller in Poland? If so would it be compatable with the multifunction steering wheel?

My main concern about the fitted unit is that the map DVD has to be in the CD slot for the Sat Nav to work thus the CD player is not useable whilst navigating.

One futher question. Is it possible to get speed camera positions/warnings displayed on either MFD2 or RNS 510?

its really easy to fit, took me 30 minutes all in (i did plan and practice the night before though) , one tip is do not disconnect the airbag warning light (or you will get a warning light come up) just move the part over to the left as in picture below) oh and get some trim pullers or make your own

you do of course need a GPS antenna and i put my antenna here

there is a guide for getting the head unit out in the middle of this guide http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=40928.0

the MFD2 is ok'ish, but the RNS510 is so much better imo, and it will be a straight swop and will work with all your other bits too

1. MFD2 is an adequate unit but with only a 2D map. The RNS 510 is more functional with a 3D map but still has limitations with only a 4 digit postcode search (as the MFD2 also). RNS 510 is a straight plug n play swop with the MFD2 and should work with the MFSW no problem.

2. The MFD2 needs the disc in to run the mapping. Your 2007 version should have the newer DVD nav disc. You can add a CD multichanger or MP3/iPod in the centre armrest or glovebox.

3. Yes you can get a hack to add speed camera locations on the RNS 510 but they are visual warnings without audio. See earlier in this thread and do a forum search for more info. Also check out this site:

Arrived this afternoon.. drove round like a mad man trying to gte it fitted somewhere! ended up at Halfords of all places... didnt trust them and left! Unit looks mint... cant wait cant wait!

Got another ICE specialist coming to fit it tomorrow morning... he said that there may be a problem with having to connect it to the speedo, although he wont know until he has a look. Anyone else had any experience of having to get another lead?

That is only an issue on aftermarket Navigation units which require a speed input which is only available via a CAN BUS adapter in the MK5.

This will be plug and play so don't let them try to sell you anything extra as you don't need it.
