what inspires you?
« on: 14 March 2008, 12:29 »
what inspires you to build/modify your car (if you do) are there any stand out cars that have made you want to go one step further, or to get that re-trim or re-spray?

for me the stance darren from g-werks gets on his cars is amazing while still being totally usable. and doing what i do i find i'm obsessed with interiors etc. weirdly one of my favourite golfs is pete carty's mk3 on the cover of PVW this month. i remember seeing it a few years ago at e38 and it blew me away. its not a car i'd want but something about it just impresses me.
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post

Inspire is not really appropriate for me as I can't afford to mod my car other than the obligatory drop, zorst and rimz. So for me it's more a case of admire and fantasy "if I won the lottery I would do...." Also I'm more of an engine man than looks man so trick oily bits get me excited.

As for cars I have to say Joe yours is one of my faves and I'm looking forward to seeing it sometime this year and getting my lens on with it. I also really like the chap on ED38 with the eaton'd MKIII 8v, it's all a bit homebrew and I love that. Much as I dislike Stanton car style wise I like the fact that the guy is very much hands on and does most of it himself even if I think the end result looks sick (and not in a ed38 way!).

Photos of other peoples clean/painted Edition Ones with polished up RM/RS ! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

What I really like though I guess is 'improvements' I can make to the cars performance and handling.
I like the way Mk2s drive and enhancing that or tailoring it to what I want is what I enjoy.

I do like show cars, but I can't think of any one car or thing which has had a big impact over any other.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

A really well thought out car inspires me.  something no nonesense. built for a purpose i guess. the car i own now was a massive inspiration when i was prepping my last golf (in terms of engineering rather than looks). its nothing out of the ordinary though.

i also love to see really clean cars, no matter what make/model.

i really want to own something that bit special one day.
i prefer walking round the car parks at shows too - seeing what people are doing to cars they use regularly (i'm not saying all show cars are trailer queens here)

All the mk3 pi55takes make me want to finish the job vw failed on....
better handling, better looks and a bit more performance... my idea is to make a mk3 what vw should of done originally and not o.t.t!

or I will fit a propellor and go sailing to france  :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:

when i had just got my mk1 there was a guy from holland i think with a gun metal type colour mk1, he kept it in a heated garage and it was always sooo clean, not sure he drove it but it looked unreal, he had even smoothed under the car and taken all the underseal off, it was real low on Ronal Turbo's! just made we want to sort my mk1 out, didnt want to go down his route but made me love the mk1 even more if you know what i mean?  :undecided:

there are a few mk3's on e38 that make me drool too!

Hmmm, well im inspired by brrrrrruumm noises, i just like going fast an havin cars that are low an mean (G60, lest we forget) hopefully my jetta will get there one day. It needs alot of work on the body an interior now the engines ok. Cant wait to just be able to drive it to shows an stuff, thats what inspires me really, turnin up an seein what everyone else has done since the last time an goin .....fook, better up it a bit!

With regards to the favorite cars, i really like Dan Allens MK1, Vaughns old G60, an not blowin smoke up grumpy arse but Joes Car, inspiring in that its a car iv actually followed the evolution of it an knowing the history an knowin that he hasnt just gone to all the names in the business an handed wads over, unlike some of the other 'unique' cars out there.

The joy for me is in finding that rare part in the scrappy, the pride i feel when someone compliments my car,the sense of accomplishment after a tricky repair/mod is completed and the thrill of driving a modern classic as it was meant to be driven.
As for inspiration i have more time for people who like myself do most of the work on their cars themselves and do so without a big fat chequebook in their hand than i do for those who have the aforementioned chequebook.
My final point could be taken the wrong way but it has to be said! I also love the feeling that i am part of this fantastic "scene"!!!
I am never happier than when on the way to/from a show i start to see other dubs,my right foot gets heavier and before i know it i am grinning like a fool!

Basic personalisation

People always ask why i spend money on my cars or change them or mess with them , i define it like this , when you buy a mobile phone , the first thing you do is set it up the way you like it , new wallpaper , personal ringtone , new colour scheme , the same with a house you never leave it decorated the same as the last person left it. Its all about stamping my identity on it. I do like show cars and cars that look good , but im always swayed in the motorsport direction , improve things faster , better brakes , handle better. Probably because i couldnt look after a pristine show car because im a bit lazy on the cleaning front

What inspires me?

Developing the ability in a car (or Transporter) to take people by surprise.

Last project - 2.2 Subaru Caravelle Syncro - whether it was making Land Rover driver's jaws hit the floor, or getting people to get out of the outside lane on a motorway to let me past, that was a lot of fun.

Current projects: T25 pick up with quattro engine - it looks skanky as hell, but the memory of seeing someone in a VR6 totally confused at the noise and speed is burnt into my memory.  The Golf Syncro - although it's stripped out inside it's something of a sleeper and I'm looking forward to having a slightly breathed-on motor added to the equation.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
