After having a test drive in the standard GTI, and as a result ordering an edition 30 I can only say that I loved the standard GTI.

Here's hoping that the edition 30 is worth the extra wonga.

I don't have the same problem as others as my TDI is over 2 years old and the whole "should I shouldn't I" didn't even enter the equation.

If the car is as good as CAR magazine says it is then I will be more than a happy bunny

The Auto Express review was complete pants and the journalist who wrote it ought to be completely and utterly ashamed that he called it a 7 car review. He probably only drove 2 or 3 of the cars back to back and didn't compare them for "hot hatchery" and instead dropped off the old excuse of price as a reason for not having to bother with half the cars.

I test drove the Ford ST just for a comparison and it didn't thrill me at all. The interior is both naff and full of cheap plastics, the suspension felt softer (although I have to admit more comfortable for the more mature)
The throttle response was good (but not on par with the golf) and the styling -- ooooh errrrrrghh
The RS focus looked miles better and IMO it took a step back with the ST.

Ooooh I like a good rant!

Come on folks the ED30 is £1715 more than the standard GTI. AE say that its £3000, not true. They must have failed their maths exams!

3 Door GTI = £20,580. + leather £ 1645, + Monza IIs £465 or just Sat Nav @ £1845.

ED30 3 Door = £22,950 18" wheels, half leather & more power.

Both are great cars ( and its nice to see that Phil agrees). I don't have a MKV GTI,  a MKIV GT TDI  at the moment so its a better buy for me.

Bye Bye Edition 30

I did the same so I'm also hoping!

Yes I agree.  I went into this thing convinced I was getting focus ST and checked out GTI as a friend convinced me too.

Was completely put off by the SHOCKING interior of the Ford.  VERY cheap loooking and feeling.

To be honest I just treated the ED 30 as another (more expensive) option i.e. - got ED 30 instead of sat nav.

At the end of the day they are both GTis so I think we are all winning!

Hang on illyun, too right i will enjoy my gti. secondly, this long list bussiness is just whats in print my friend in magazines, so what i put it on here is MY OPINION and if you read my previous thread, you would realise i was satisfying my oppinion and whether or not i spent wisely in the 1st place which i have done, all im saying is, high spec a cheaper gti , add the bits to it, and enjoy it, rather then spending £3000 grand more(which buys you alot of xtras).I couldnt afford to chop mine in and have a rubbish low spec edition 30 after having a high spec standard GTI .if i want xtra horsepower, id pay £407 to MOREGO , but im not interested. 0.3 of a sec for £3000. no thanks. and tartan isnt my thing. !!

Im not as privalaged as you, i know also you said you dont have MORGAGE and such things, whereas i do and cant afford to regually swop cars more times then underwear changes!. Im not envious in ANYWAY my friend, just trying to help anyone whos toying or what to buy themselves and like ive said from the start , both are cracking.

Firstly Phil, enjoy your GTI - I'm sure that a lot of us, including me, spend hard earned cash, even if it stretches our bank balance, because we want to drive a car that we enjoy and not just something that takes us from A to B... otherwise we wouldn't be on this board.

Secondly, I don't really take all this seriously, but if I did I would be the first to admit that in all honesty, you and some magazines do make strong and valid points about the lost opportunity that is the Edition 30, but for me its a piece of history which I intend to keep and cherish and drive sparingly (also, your points aren't strong enough to put me off buying one because I'm also a badge snob and have to have that 'limited' model  with the potential of 307bhp on tap

Thirdly, I'm not Pikey (with reference to the guy who got on the wrong side of The Doc a year back) nor am I Teutonic/Creepy who seem to like a good slanging match even though from what I've read, I have to agree with Teutonic on the issue of aftermarket Xenons.

Fourthly, I haven't got a mortgage etc... because I have - probably foolishly - spent money on cars, or to be precise, VW Golf GTIs, although thats something I aim to rectify - with trepedition - this year hopefully...

Fifthly, yes I'm afraid that despite the nasty Pescara's and the underwhelming interior, the Edition 30 is better than the standard GTI although I acknowledge that some people prefer lesser models and that really is ok with me.

LOL      I didn't say you called me Pikey... there was some forum member with the alias 'Pikey' who really wound the Doc up so much that the Doc warned him to calm down as they might meet one day!
