It also depends on how you are going to use the car.  I bet the gti is still the best all rounder from that bunch autoexcretion did a "review" on.

Hold the Presses...................

In Todays Car magazine the results are very different. The ED30 gets a very good write up! It gets described as the best all rounder and only comes second to the Type R. Thats against other cars such as the Cooper S, Clio. 130i, S3 and R32.

"The golf feels utterly perfect;it's tight, the body impeccably controlled but still well damped and comfortable" "Ultimately the Golf is more rewarding and consistent" than the Focus. No problems with the engine.
The comment with regards to the S3 engine "the power delivery is smooth, consistent....." totally differnt to the Auto Express review of the S3.
If you want more involvement get the Type R. If you want something differnt to the GTI get a R32 they say.

Mind you the the GTI came bottom of the last AE hot hatch test in October i think.  HALT
the b!tching, what b!tching. I feel much better now.
Bye Bye Edition 30

Right... I have to get in on this b!tching act too because I really feel left out.

So here goes...

Not too good a reading on the edition 30 again this week in Auto Express
The car was put against 7 other cars,Mazda mps,Seat leon FR, Renaultspoilt clio,Mini cooper S, New Civic type R GT,Renaultspoilt Megane R230, and Ford unfocused ST.
these cars were whittled down to the top 4 and the edition 30 never made the top 4. reasons were:-
"spicey but Pricey"
Quote"The only change from the GTI is the extra power-and paying the best part of £3000 for 30hp doesnt seem good value for money.|The uprated engine TAKES TOO LONG to get into its stride, and we prefer the standard GTI's looks   . Boy oh Boy do i feel happy now!.

Well Phil, I am glad you are happy with your GTI and I am sure that the not inconsiderable fact that you have splashed out  a load of hard earned dosh on it just before the Edition 30 was announced irks just a tad    I reckon you're trying very hard to convince yourself that you have got the better deal... All I can say is... enjoy your standard GTI and i'll enjoy my Edition 30 GTI

And to the rest of you Edition 30 detractors, its interesting that such a disappointing car - and I would be the first to agree that it isn't exactly the sort of car I was expecting - has caused such controversy.  If you don't want it don't buy it, but stop coming out with long lists of why the standard is better... thats just a psychological ploy to ease the PAIN

That CAR magazine article is really good...one of my favourite magazines

Great photography and writing, with proper reviews of each car, and not just a rehashed press release that the weekly "comics" of Autoexpress and Autocar usually pump out.

R32 gets a really good write up, as does the Edition 30...new Honda TypeR just pips them all, in their opinion

I'm not convinced AE have driven the car again in that group test, they seemed to have ruled it out when they drove the red 5 door from the start.

At least in the CAR test they drove them all back to back. A more honest impression to me.

I reckon the Ed30 will be the better car. it has to be - higher spec all round.

BUT

i didn't want to pay the extra as i didn't feel it was what i wanted. The extra running costs (insurance and fuel) and puchase price ruled it out for me.

Thats where the opinion is in it for me. Does the extra cost for the extra options appeal. Do i want the apparent higher specs for the cost.

Couldn't really say the GTi is the better car, but for some the compramise between performance and cost appeals a tiny bit more.

Hang on illyun, too right i will enjoy my gti. secondly, this long list bussiness is just whats in print my friend in magazines, so what i put it on here is MY OPINION and if you read my previous thread, you would realise i was satisfying my oppinion and whether or not i spent wisely in the 1st place which i have done, all im saying is, high spec a cheaper gti , add the bits to it, and enjoy it, rather then spending £3000 grand more(which buys you alot of xtras).I couldnt afford to chop mine in and have a rubbish low spec edition 30 after having a high spec standard GTI .if i want xtra horsepower, id pay £407 to MOREGO , but im not interested. 0.3 of a sec for £3000. no thanks. and tartan isnt my thing. !!

Im not as privalaged as you, i know also you said you dont have MORGAGE and such things, whereas i do and cant afford to regually swop cars more times then underwear changes!. Im not envious in ANYWAY my friend, just trying to help anyone whos toying or what to buy themselves and like ive said from the start , both are cracking.
