Not too good a reading on the edition 30 again this week in Auto Express
The car was put against 7 other cars,Mazda mps,Seat leon FR, Renaultspoilt clio,Mini cooper S, New Civic type R GT,Renaultspoilt Megane R230, and Ford unfocused ST.
these cars were whittled down to the top 4 and the edition 30 never made the top 4. reasons were:-
"spicey but Pricey"
Quote"The only change from the GTI is the extra power-and paying the best part of £3000 for 30hp doesnt seem good value for money.|The uprated engine TAKES TOO LONG to get into its stride, and we prefer the standard GTI's looks   . Boy oh Boy do i feel happy now!.

I'll wait till my own test drive...Auto Express reviews have never inspired much confidence

"Quote - the only change from the GTI is the extra power.."  which leaves out the trim and other cosmetic changes, which in my book is an inaccurate review

The "delay" in engine response will be from the larger turbo spooling up..and is exactly the same on the 1.8t engines, when comparing the lower power versions (KO3 turbo) and the 210hp/225hp versions (KO4 turbo)...peak torque is a few hundred RPM further up the range as a result

The cosmetic changes are personal taste, so I can't and won't pick them up about that

Personally, the black trim isn't for me, and I find the 18" Monza wheels a little OTT, but both cars are still great

Golf Mk8 R order cancelled...awaiting company car instead

Yes they are both great, i think most mags will hold the 1st mk 5 gti as always the better one cus, its cheaper then the 2nd edition with only subtle changes

I must say peeps, both autocar and auto express mags are worth a look this week , lots about the hot hatch market. So if you get sent out by your missus to tesco stop and shop to get milk, worth picking up a copy

Must say I really like the Ed30, just didn't want to pay the extra over the GTi. Can't see why it would get a worse write up on the grounds of the car's performance when it is a GTi and some.

Part of me wishes I'd gone for the Ed30. That bit is located close to the R32 envious streak, but is a little more prominent.

Then I remember that i saved £1700 ish plus i prefer the Monza 2's so it's not all bad.

All a question of taste and how much you want to spend on your GTi I guess.

Ahh, but I thought only the new S3 had the bigger turbo, and the GTI Ed30 was just an ECU remap to ramp the power.  Correct me if I'm wrong though!

TT - don't think anyone really knows 100%. Seems S3 turbo is the current favoured source of power.

I wouldn't take any notice. Auto Express don't know their ear hole from their a$$ hole. I remember reading an article about the first new mini cooper s when i was looking to buy my mini and all the information they said about the chrysler engines was totally incorrect. They rely on their articles about cars which will come out in 5 years time and even that info is all made up. I got a normal GTI and im chuffed but they don't seem to relise the fact you pay more for more power, extra touches and the most important - exclusivity!! The edition 30's shold in theory hold their money better in the long term, so whats the problem???

And finally, I don't know who has driven the new Focus ST but I thought it was s**t, one of the most boring cars on the road in my opinion. The Mini was top fun but my GTI =

Car magazine, which is a much better mag, gives it a very good review in all.
