After ordering in August before the price rises, finally got confirmed build week 50, so looking forward to delivery in January ( hopefully)
Did not order many extras but did push over the £40k. A pain but if looking at that sort of price I may as well spec what I want. With Covid and a job change reducing my mileage I thought I would hold onto my 18 plate GTI non pp manual for longer than the 3/4 years that I would normally. It is a great car
Rather than sell it, we have decided to get rid of the family runabout instead and enjoy life.
The points made on price rises are well made, but I see this as my last ICE car assuming that battery technology and infrastructure improves to the level that makes me comfortable.

Down yer in sunny Devon there are two pre-reg’d in Plymouth VW at £33,995, one PW and one in Kings, both likely being used as dealer management cars. Sister site Newton Abbot VW had a grey one which was only £33,495 and under 1k miles (74 plate) which soon got snapped up.
The trouble with these on a PCP would be much higher %APR than buying a discounted new car so the actual monthlies might not be much, if any, better. Although from past experience fiddling about on the finance calculator with a dealer pre-reg’d car you can sometimes reduce the monthlies quite a bit by going for quite a short term, say 18-24 months. That might depend very much on the car and how much they’ve knocked off the original retail though, with the higher GFV bringing the monthlies down if you’ve put in a decent deposit.
Mind you I’m crap at maths so none of the above could be true! 😁

Just had a play with their finance calculator on Murray’s own site. Using the same terms as mine - 36 months 1k deposit and 8k miles per year. The used white one was £583 a month versus mine at £491 with 6.9% APR. Glad I jumped on as an early adopter!

That’s quite a jump!
If one wanted to avoid the £40k tax then being an early adopter was the only sure fire way.
If you wanted a bit of spec and weren’t fussed about the tax then not so much, just increasing wait times and even higher new registration tax likelihood to rub salt in financial wounds.

Going back to Colh’s dilemma - what electric car to get? If wishing to avoid the £40k tax you’d need to guarantee delivery before the end of March next year otherwise it’d be something like an Alpine A290 maybe? (Assuming a hot hatch type EV was criteria)

At the moment you would be fishing in a very small pond. The Alpine 290 GTS (estimated price £38k) is reviewed in this week's Autoexpress. It may be of interest if you are under 50, very rarely carry rear passengers, and still favour go-cart handling, but it is no match for the all-round capabilities of the Golf GTI. Any other "performance EV" will be well north of £40k, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5N (£62k?), which looks like a hatchback in the photos but is actually massive! More a medium sized SUV. The main competitor for the Alpine 290 GTS is probably the MINI Cooper SE.

Ioniq 5N def a nice car, but as of now looks more like a "prototype" of what to expect moving forward. I bet Ioniq 6N, and further generations will be a lot better, and 5N will loose it's value quite fast.

As of now, bad sound, low range, and too heavy (probably this issue won't be solved anyway )

But it's still a decent car for the price if you have where to charge it and it's only for city routs. Def no travel with such range.

Morning all, hopefully I’ll be in the position to order a factory build GTI in the next week or so. Anyone ordered recently and what’s the expected delivery? Also, Drive the deal are currently offering £4K discount plus the extra £2,500 PCP deposit, so bringing the car down from £45k to £38.5k, as I plan to pay off the PCP next June. Anyone used Drive the deal as I’ve never ordered a car this way before.

Drive the deal is fine Monkey.

You are probably looking at four months plus for delivery, possibly longer.

Be aware that you will definitely pay luxury car tax and if its delivered in April the first year ved will double... And vw won't cover it.

Agree regarding DTD. I haven't used them but plenty on the Golf R forum have and found them very reliable. I enquired about GTI delivery times at my local VW dealer last week and was told "officially 18 weeks, but it may come a bit sooner". However, I agree that "unexpected things can happen" to delay delivery, in which case anyone ordering now would be perilously close to that 1 April 2025 date. Not a risk I was prepared to take (the luxury car tax is bad enough!) so I will wait for a nice stock (or ex demo) car to pop up.

Ordered mine on the 8th September and just today I have received an email from VW saying they're about to begin the build.  The dealer said last month he thought a build date of the last week of November, and delivery by end of January.  If it does come then, that will be just under 5 months, which works out around the 18 weeks you were told.

That new VED emissions tax upgrade is going to be a killer for any cars after the 1st of April. It’s not just what you will pay and the impact it will have on used values will also be very telling. It was bad enough paying the £570 on my old Ed 45 but to double that price is like having a separate finance payment. I off loaded the 45 and got a brand new end of run Mark IV VRS 245 estate with some extras (pan roof, tow bar prep) keep it under the tax threshold. Love the car love the space it has and its reliability is fantastic. Get up to 47 mpg on a good run and have the fun without that horrific cost. Sorry but it’s just going to far at what price enjoyment is going to cost!
