Comes down to money unfortunately.  Going from sub £400pm to nearly £500pm for the same spec car just doesn’t add up.

Sales must be good at VW.  Phoned to check they were processing my refund and not a hint of giving a sh1t.  No attempt to keep a customer of 16 years.

Contacted the dealer who confirmed that yes it would now be subject to luxury car tax.  They were not forthcoming with that information earlier so I guess hoped I’d just end up stuck with it.

Also said they’d not discount the car further to make up the difference, so cancelling the order.

I’ll run out the rest of my PCP deal and probably make the jump to electric in the new year, but won’t be with VW.

If you are thinking of getting a new electric be mindful from 1st of April 2025 new electric cars over £40,000 are going to be charged the luxury car tax….

So if you are going for a new electric car on lease or buying one on PCP and it’s over £40k you need to take delivery and have it registered before the 1st of April.

If you want to consider leasing a new electric car let me know 👍🏻

I thought the luxury tax wasn't grandfathered Lee?

That all electric things under five years old would pay it for the balance of the five years...

From people I know who work at VW dealers I think things are pretty good.

The first few batches of 8.5’s looked half decent value by current market pricing. Since then we’re looking at over £1k increase in list price over a matter of a few months, and now extra tax looming as the build waits return to VW norms Obviously people are happy to pay it and few will watch the market as closely as forum members.
Sometimes you’ve just got to take stock and refuse to pay the prices. I’d have done the same as you Colh

@Colh there is always the option of finding a car that is already registered but low miles, I saw this on autotrader, http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202411116173488
I realise it’s not the colour you had ordered and I don’t know what your discount was,but it only has 900 miles on the clock.
white does look pretty good on the 8.5 imo,

Down yer in sunny Devon there are two pre-reg’d in Plymouth VW at £33,995, one PW and one in Kings, both likely being used as dealer management cars. Sister site Newton Abbot VW had a grey one which was only £33,495 and under 1k miles (74 plate) which soon got snapped up.
The trouble with these on a PCP would be much higher %APR than buying a discounted new car so the actual monthlies might not be much, if any, better. Although from past experience fiddling about on the finance calculator with a dealer pre-reg’d car you can sometimes reduce the monthlies quite a bit by going for quite a short term, say 18-24 months. That might depend very much on the car and how much they’ve knocked off the original retail though, with the higher GFV bringing the monthlies down if you’ve put in a decent deposit.
Mind you I’m crap at maths so none of the above could be true! 😁

Agree, there’s probably not much in it when considering the monthly payments on a brand new GTI v’s a nearly new one.

VW’s current PCP representative APR is 7.5% on new cars and 9.9% on used. The independent dealer selling the GTI on AutoTrader at the link posted by @Carlosfandango is also showing a PCP APR of 9.9% through their finance provider; example monthly payments for that car are £475 per month which is pretty close to the ‘nearly £500’ monthly figure quoted by @Colh for a brand new GTI in their post at reply #290 in this discussion topic.

Setting aside the forthcoming price increase, there’s also a good chance that many nearly new / pre-registered GTI’s would have broken the £40k list price threshold when they were first registered. If so, then prospective purchasers won’t have the benefit of paying just the standard VED rate either by buying nearly new - they’ll also be hit with the enhanced VED rate for five years from year two.
