Just some info from the VW workshop manual when removing Airbags.

Quote from: VW ELSAWIN
When working on the airbag system (pyrotechnic components and the airbag control unit -J234-, wiring) disconnect the battery ground cable while the ignition is on.

Exception: for vehicles with a battery inside the passenger compartment, the ignition must be off.
Then cover the negative terminal.

After disconnecting the battery, you need to wait for 10 seconds.

The battery must be connected with the ignition SWITCHED ON.

Thanks for the replies, all very helpful.

Very good idea getting a comparable VRM offautotrader, I'll try that!

I've found the wiring diagram, I'm thinking of making the loom up myself again (as I did on the mk5) only thing is, I need loads more canbus wire, which is expensive in itself!

Changing the bcm is the only thing I'm a bit sceptical about, so any advice on that would be great!!
I've read in 1 link somewhere that changing from 086 to 087 isn't actually necessary, but I believe that's wrong info as all 086's I've come across haven't got pins in 48 and 49 of socket 'c'!

Cheers

Mavs will give you the info on how to change the BCM and code it. On my routing about i believe the guys in America do just that, use the 086 BCM and power the shutters by re pinning the original harness. I have actually seen a harness like the Kufatec one but less the trigger wires. This was posted on that site in the dark reaches somewhere. Glasgow retrofit firm i think.

The idea for looking at the Auto trader was a combination of when i left school i trained as a Ford parts technician and forensic science with the Open University...am maybe a "NERD"  :nerd:

Cheers guys, taken all that in... I think! They're not making things easier to work on!

Well I picked a set of lights up yesterday, genuine xenons with LED's, pair of wiring adaptors and a bcm.
The bcm is 086, but that was taken out of the same car with the lights, so I'm guessing it's software is right.
I'm going to hook up vag com tomorrow to check my bcm, how do I see what software it's running?

I've just been through all links of links of links regarding byte 18, and I'm now officially scared to touch it!!!

Forgot to mention my car has led rear lights and number plate lights, all fitted as standard (as far as I'm aware)

Cheers

Software version can be found when you open the controller window for the BCM 09. If you look in the component window it's the last 4 digits.
Another link stating that the 086 module can be used for AFS. http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91411 As for byte 18..be afraid....very afraid...get it wrong your lighting system will be transformed to another dimension  you'll have probably read that 00 hides the real code from factory. My byte 18 is set at 04.

Golfhappy is right, be careful when playing with Byte 18, 04 did not work for me, I think it is only good for early cars 2009, mine is a March 2010 and I used 15 to get the correct operation.

I found this which helped me, although it is from a US site.

MJ2009 with BCM (03xx software)
Encoding   VCDS Byte 18 = 04
Lights go out at the tailgate opens   NO
Error message MFA   Rear fog lamp with Resistance: No
Problem with front parking light (weak light)   NO
LED tailgate light up more when braking   YES

MJ2010 with BCM from KW22/2009 (Software 0537, 0541)
Encoding   Halogen VCDS Byte 18 = 15   Xenon VCDS Byte 18 = 43
Lights go out at the tailgate opens   NO   Update on 0575 / 6 *
Error message MFA   NO   Update on 0575 / 6 *
Problem with front parking light (weak light)   NO   Update on 0575 / 6 *
LED tailgate light up more when braking   NO   Update on 0575 / 6 *

With MJ2010 / BCM 2011 from KW45/2009 (0573 & 0575 Software / 0576)
Encoding   Halogen VCDS Byte 18 = 15   Xenon VCDS Byte 18 = 43
Lights go out at the tailgate opens   YES   YES
Error message MFA   NO   NO
Problem with front parking light (weak light)   NO   NO
LED tailgate light up more when braking   NO   NO

I had to buy the 087 variant because the shutter activation pins were missing on the connector.

Do pins 48 and 49, labelled below,  exist on the BCM you have?

Mike i'm 99% sure that those pins wont be on an 086 module. But from memory he has the module from the GTI the lights came from, plus did the harnesses come from the car or did you buy them extra?

This is what I was originally confused about, because I read people were doing it with the 086, but I thought you had to add the 2 pins.

Every 086 I've seen don't have the pins, but I've now found out after all the research and help, that you don't need to wire the shutters to the bcm at all, it can be done via the original high beam wire.

It's just the bcm software that matters when it comes to coding LED's.

If that's the case then it looks like you won't have to change your BCM.

The software version in mine does not support LED number plate lights so looks like it is older than yours but I had no problems with the LED Xenons.  Software version 575.
