Haha, so it is.
Wow, they definately want shot of those GTIs

I think VW have shot themselves in the foot with the 7GTI not having a 280bhp engine like the Seat Cupra 280. Sales of a 280bhp 7GTI would probably go through the roof.

But then no-one would be wanting an R for an extra 20PS counteracted by the extra 120Kg of the 4Motion system. There will always be people who'd rather have a VW GTI with 220/230ps than a Seat Leon Cupra 265/280 due to equipment/interior/residual differences. My local Seat dealership is sh!te - all the attitude of an Audi dealership, but without the badge snobbery to match. trading in my MK5 GT170TDI, they wanted me to put a deposit down brfore I could take a test drive....I got a Scirocco instead.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

It's the original pricing & old leasing deals on the R that shot the GTI in the foot. Whoever decided the R should be cheaper per month than the GTI should be fired.

The GTI is an amazing car (much nicer than the Seat Cupra 280 IMO) but the R stole it's thunder with 50p a month lease deals seeing many GTI's back at the dealer.
Current - MK7 Golf GTI - Tornado Red, 5 Door, DSG, Performance Pack, Dynamic Chasis Control, Panoramic Sunroof, Discover Navigation, Dynaudio.

All gone.

I agree this is what did for the GTI, VWUK have only themselves to blame and are trying to redress the balance.  So it may be the future GTIers turn to get the better deal, and good luck to them.

All three GTI, GTD and R are very good cars.  We on here are possibly pickier than most, scrutinising and analysing every little detail.  Sometimes forgetting the bigger picture and the overall excellence of the car (for what it is) gets lost in that detail.

Mr Savage:

The Golf R lease deals were not 50p ones. That is an exaggeration. They did cost a few hundred pounds a month. IMO the car is not worth more than that and the GTI/GTD prices should also be reduced accordingly and considerably as they seem overpriced to me.

Anyway, I feel extremely happy and very fortunate to have jumped onto a 3 year very cheap lease bandwagon directly from my local VW Dealership. Felt euphoric and a bit like a lottery win! At the time it seemed too good to be true and it still does.

GTD is cheap to lease as well, it just didn't get much attention as the R overshadows it.

Of the trio the GTI has sold in the fewest numbers. I originally thought this was deliberate by VW to keep it relatively exclusive and desirable, but these recent offers are making me think otherwise! I'm still surprised on the Tech Pack pricing though as it does feel like DNS should be getting included to make it that cheap to step up to Pro.

Obviously the "50p lease deals" comment was strictly metaphoric to emphasise a point that the R's were priced to cheap and they were.

The R should never cost less a month than the GTI in any shape or form. That's the point of the whole structure of the VW Golf. Golf > GTD > GTI > R. If they are marketed and branded in that order they should also have monthly costs in that order.

It would be like a director being payed more than the chief executive of the same company. It doesn't make any logical sense. My local dealer said they had to stop the lease deals on the R early because as they said in their own words "it was getting ridiculous".

The poor sales of the mk6 R gave a bit of doubt as to whether VW were even going to launch the R according to vw early in the mk7's life.

So I guess they thought they'd throw a load of cheap leases out to generate sales (no doubt being aware they'd stay in vw finance's clutches as mk6 R's were sought after in dealerships and fetched good prices second hand giving VW at least another bite of the sales cherry per unit sold.

What they weren't expecting was the fact the cheap deals would quickly go viral on the Internet.

Win win for both VW and the lucky early 50p lease adopters but it was never going to last.

I'll be the first to raise a glass to those that got in on the cheap deals, it's not often you get an offer like that from VW!!!

GTD is available to lease at 120 a month plus VAT at the moment - that's a lot cheaper than the R deals.....
