Ha, ha.

I'll keep believing it as it helps not having the luck to spec a Tech Pack a bit more palatable. I've got 3 years with this car and will just have to accept a measly 5.8" whilst you will be enjoying an enormous 8".

Life's not fair.

I will not hesitate to gloat at every opportunity

Now that's not nice Asker   Jealousy brings out the worst in people

In all seriousness it must be highly annoying just missing out, but at the end of the day you've still got a beautiful Tornado R even if it is lacking a couple of inches of plastic

Well, the race is on now between our respective salesmen

Well my man wins, sort of.  Just picked up an email he sent a couple hours ago:

Hi Rebecca,

I have phoned Volkswagen UK to ask them about the Tech pack for the Golf, and why it is more expensive for the R compared with the GTi. I'm not sure why just the GT and R Line models that have the Discover navigation as standard are not at the lower price, as it is a factory option on the other models, so I don't understand why the Tech pack for a GTi/GTD is less in cost than the R.

They have sent an enquiry to product and marketing to find out why this is, once I have heard back I will let you know.

Not a definitive answer yet but all credit for emailing at such an hour, maybe he's reading this forum

The email is worded a little oddly, but essentially the Tech Pack option is priced at £1240 on the GT and R-line models where DNS comes as standard which makes sense, so one would expect the higher pack price of £1840 to apply to both GTI/GTD and R, neither of which have nav as standard.   Anyway, will see what response he gets.  I have replied asking again if I would be able to add the pack whichever price it is.......watch this space.

Did you hear anything further on this?

From the R Forum regarding the different Tech Pack prices for the R and GTI/GTD:
Asked VW UK. Their response was "This is because of the model prices for the UK market. We're unable to offer the lower price on Golf R."
