Update:

The dealer, who has been very good by the way, has told me that VW HQ Techies have suggested there could be a problem with certain shock absorbers. Apparently the issue relates to some part (can't be more specific) within he body of the shock which is causing the squeaky rattle.
They are going to fit my car, temporarily, with shocks from a Golf they have on site and then do a test run. If that fixes the problem then they'll order some new. The rub is though that if they prove its my shocks that are the problem and they order some new ones, they don'y know if the new ones will have the same problem.
