Squeaky suspension
« on: 26 February 2014, 19:28 »
Hi all, my baby is nearly 4 weeks old and despite being in love one small bugbear since the get go has been a low level squeaking I hear at low speed (like 20 or lower) bit annoying for a new car but everything else is so fantastic sort of shrugged my shoulders.

I then began reading about others having squeaks and harsh suspension. Which lead me to the issue of a few reported cases of at pdi the 'puk' transport inserts in the front suspension being left in so last night jacked it up and pulled the boot up not there.

So was going to leave it until the first service for further investigation until by chance tonight when I was washing her I stumbled upon the problem so in case you have same/similar I post this with the intention of helping.

Solution:- fingers up front the ACC sensor and a joint between the bumper, grill and some other trim the culprit. Tried GT85 lube, did nothing, so rolled up a small piece of rag and pushed it in. No more squeak, temp fix as I can't be happy on a new car with such a basic issue so will raise it still at first service.

Adrian.

Hi Adrian
I have similar although not so pronounced squeak from the front bumper on my GTi, I don't think its audible when inside the car (not yet anyway)! Be interesting to know the dealer fix when you get it sorted mate.

I can't see how the squeak from the grill in the bumper could possibly transmit itself into the car while moving? I mean it's not a part that's under strain when steering / manoeuvring the car is it... It only squeaks there when prodded...

I'm hearing a mousey / hamster like squeak from the front now too. Only noticeable at low very speeds, say when parking and steering from lock to lock.

I know what you're saying but it would be funny if it was. We all seem to be experiencing this trapped squirrel in some shape or form hopefully I'll have some answers tomorrow, I'll left it there overnight and no phone call today so they must be working on it I hope

Hello, a good point you raise

Of course loads are applied throughout the car over bumps like torsional and compression, suspension doesn't take it all out or else we couldn't move around inside the car. There's a huge load from wind but in this case discounted as its only slow speed.

Its so loud it wouldn't take much to create a lesser load than I'm applying and therefor lessor sound which can be heard at low speeds when everything else is quiet, and it is over bumpy twisty minor lanes where i live.

Tested on same lane this morning no noise!

Thanks

Squeaky/creaky front suspension noises are most likely to be caused by damaged suspension mount bearings. There may still be some transport pucks attached to the front suspension struts (which may be attributable to the mount bearings damage.

Thanks, as I said I've checked for puks first, and I will get the garage to check as you correctly say the top mounts as these too are widely reported to be troublesome.

Ridiculous though on a new car!

My front left suspension has squeaked from about 2000 miles onwards. Went to the dealers several times but they either can't be arsed or can't find the fault. I've put up with it for now. Just hope the new one isn't the same.

I'm exactly the same as GTI7me. My front left suspension creaks, squeaks and groans whilst manoeuvring at low speeds (say 0-15 mph). My Mrs calls it the creaking ship

I don't like that it makes this noise but I'm putting up with it because; (a) Can't really be arsed taking it to the dealers (b) It's not that bad that I'm too upset by it (c) Hoping that is disappears by itself [read head in sand].

Will mention it at first service if the problem is still there.
