Today I formally rejected my GTI quoting the 1979 Sale of Goods Act (Section 2, sub-section 14) and gave them back my keys.

I dropped the car off at the dealers and handed them a letter.  This has been linked up with VWFS and VAG Customer Services using the Customer Services case number.

Why?  Well its not because the suspension noise is akin to a 10+ year old car with 200k+ miles (its a 63 plate with 5k) nor is it because the dealer screwed me over with a VAG-COM retrofit satnav that didn't work (incompatible with Dynaudio) and that Volkswagen Group have today informed me that, if it had been left in situ, would have  negated part of the vehicle warranty.  Nope, I could have even handled that.  It is, in fact, the complete arrogance of the Volkswagen organisation.  They admit that there is indeed some kind of suspension issue with certain cars (batches)but they are unwilling/unable to provide any target date for root cause analysis or fix; absolutely nothing. They simply expect me (you) to live with it until they have found the answer irrespective of how long that takes.  Moreover, they go to great lengths to tell me that there is no safety risk.  When I asked them how they could honestly guarantee that when they don't know what the problem is and point out just how illogical that position is they just clam up and shrug.

I'm now screwed without the car but it seems that the only way to get their attention is by making such a 'grand stance'. I'm not sure I have their attention.

Did they accept your rejection as in they are now taking steps to get you out of your finance agreement (if you didn't buy outright) and/or reimburse all monies paid so far?

So what's next? What car do you have in mind to replace it?

I dropped my car in this morning to have my squeaky suspension / steering checked out. Within half an hour they've come back with the diagnosis... I need 2 new shock mount bearings. A bit worrying really for a car with less than 5k miles on it.

Joe - Do you think could you get a TPI number for this fault? Would be really helpful for us guys with the same issue. Thx

Seems to be a common theme with the  GTI and GTD on the front mounts. On another forum, the GTs (but not the GTDs or GTIs) seem to suffer from a squeaky rear suspension – but VW have no fix for that issue right now, even though they are aware of it. I’d have to assume that with a slightly lower suspension, we’ve got different mounts to the GTs, and ours are getting buggered during the transit process (by the pucks?). My pucks were left in post PDI, and I discovered them at around 300 miles in. This issue should be well known to the dealerships, the one that fixed mine had already had 4 GTI/GTDs in for shock mount bearing replacements on the front.

Haven’t had any reports yet of anyone requiring a second replacement set. Seems that the car is usually squeaky on delivery or not too many miles into ownership. If that continues to be the case then it would point to either incorrect assembly on the line or transport damage (or perhaps a crappy batch used on GTIs and GTDs from Q3 of 2013).

I'll ask for the TPI when I bring it back next week for them to be replaced (they've had to order them).

I'd doubt if mine was caused by the transport pucks. I'm 99% sure mine were properly removed in the PDI, I never saw any evidence of them there after I took delivery. I have the car 8 months (5000 miles) and I only noticed this squeaking in the last couple of weeks.

Please do, it would be very nice to have one. I also am confident that i didnt have the pucks left in, but perhaps the issue is damaged by transport itself. Also, its likely that lowering the springs has put extra tension on mine making it worse than it should be.

When i get to shark ill see if there is an uprated one that can be installed and let you know, if people dont want to be back into the dealers every few months lol

There is the possibility that the pucks damaged the bearings on the way over to the UK. Each car will have been driven a short distance for loading/unloading at each end – when do they put the pucks in?  At the factory, or at the dockside? Was it a particularly choppy trip across the sea that saw the suspension reach the end of its puck-shortened travel many times on the boat leg of the journey, slamming into the bearings maybe thousands of times in the crossing? My car’s suspension was squeaking from day 1, I don’t think the 300 miles I drove it with the pucks in damaged the bearings much more than they were already damaged on collection.

Pucks removed on PDI might mean nowt if the damage was already done.

This all assumes the pucks did the damage at some point – maybe the bearings were knackered from the start, or the fitment process with automated fitting was damaging them?
