Another option that's for sale on ebay is a g60 gearbox code cba, fast through the gears but longer in 4th and 5th. 156 mph in 5th

the 8v gti box is closer ratio than the cba box which is better suited to a revvy 16v engine. it all comes down to how you want to drive it though. top speed or acceleration???

did you ever find out what the code is of the box currently fitted? just because you think its an 8v box doesnt mean it is....i once had a 16v that came with a Maestro box - yes an Austin Maestro box!!

Haha my dad used to have one of them, heap of crap.
Think it's an 8v as it was a 8v clutch that the garage got for it when they did the engine.
It's maybe me thinking it was going to be faster then it is. :undecided:
But I have seen some YouTube vids of abf mk2s and they look faster.

Your missing the point. All 1.6, 1.8, driver, gti, gl & diesel all use the same 8v clutch on a variety of gearboxes with different ratio's and all boxes fit hence until you get the gearbox code of the bottom of the bellhousing you dont know what is in it

You'd want an AUG box imo - closest to a 16v box but with a slightly longer 5th

this is a listing of all rod boxes and their ratio's ( http://www.scirocco.org/gears/) hence find out what yours is.
