If its better cruising economy you're after then:

I had an AUG box on my golf and had an 80 mile round trip to work so swapped out the 5th .89 cog for a .75 5th gear cog from a 4T box. Had the close ratio gears 1st to 4th then an ‘overdrive’ 5th. She used to return 45 mpg regularly on a run at 75 mph.
that's the same set up I had on my last mk2 but the gap between 4th and 5th was massive. I put a .80 5th gear from a mk3 golf 1.4 cza gearbox in my current mk2 and that seems a good compromise. same 5th gear ratio as a che/dfq gearbox but it doesn't need the fancy circlip retainer thingy.

WHOAH WHOAH WHOAH WHOAH!

Before you run off down into discussing Passat 16V and G60 boxes remember that you're going from rod-change to cable-change which means a completely different shift assembly, to the stick in the car, different front engine mount bracket, starter, flywheel, clutch, clutch actuation method, and the long driveshaft is shorter etc etc etc

Now, do you want all that, or do you just want slightly different gear ratios in your car?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

So would it be worth getting the box rebuilt and just change 4th and 5th?
I have no idea

Your initial post was about the car feeling sluggish and the gears too long, the goal being more acceleration. Now we have gone the other way to make a more fuel efficient and motorway friendly top end.
