Mk2's Vs 106 GTI
« on: 09 July 2005, 17:57 »
I've been reading quite a bit about 106 GTIs recently and everywhere i go i hear nothing but praise about their handling and nippyness.

Anyone came across one in a 16v or 8v? If so how did you fare? With 120bhp and possibly a fair bit lighter than a golf, i would think they would outdo an 8v?

Not so sure about the 16v though?

Wife used to own a Saxo VTR and while my 8V is quicker in a straight line, I am pretty sure that the Saxo would cream it through the twisty stuff.  Add the better handling of the 106 and extra power, and I fear only a well sorted valver would come out on top.

valver would eat it all day long, straights and twisties, 8vs are a bit reluctant and the pug would beat it.

On the other hand, the pug is more likely to rust away within a few years where as the vw will be just as strong in years to come.

valver would eat it all day long,

Bwahahahahahahaha, thats the funniest thing i have read all day long......

Look, 106 gti - 120bhp, weight approx 900kg, and the golf 16v, 139bhp, weight 930kg

this means that the power to weight ratio is

106gti: 133.333 bhp/tonne
16gti:   149.46 bhp/tonne

This means that in a straight line the golf would win, no questions asked...However, on the track, totally stock and i think that you would find that due to the small size a nibleness of the 106 it would win the race because the Golf is a larger/slightly higher car the handling charateristic would be poorer than the 106.  Remember this is for totally stock cars.
