my mates 106 has about 150 bhp and does 0-60 in the early 6's quite comfortably, but as they are 1.6 i could easily keep up with him after that on the dual carriageway. handling is pretty similar really between mine and his, we both got koni adjustables  the 106 will be better because of the weight factor only, get the golf to the same weight and im sure it would handle better

Even if the pug is quicker, rather have a golf....

Oh, and no car suffers from rust, after owning japanese cars pretty much all of my driving life, I've learned to call it a 'Lightweight honeycomb structure'

I think you will find that this is what hinders the 106's performance somewhat.

At the end of the day it's French and my valvers German, pug is all garlic onions and perfume and a  girly car whereas a Golf is made of german blood sweat and tears find a willing pug driver and we'll have a race round a track and see who wins once my valver hits 4200 we're going back to the future, wastes most modern cars mx5 roadster, bmw 1 series, mini cooper s, mk3 16v golf and many others. It's not how fast it goes it's how you drive. even a transit van can beat a pug 106 gti if it's a nonce driving.

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

Have you modded your engine at all?

Thanks for all the replies people. I think i've been sold on the idea of a valver anyway. Maybe i would like the feel of an 8v more but if i never drive one i'll never know! Anything's better than a 1.2 Clio though.

My mate's thinking of getting a 106 GTi and there's no way i could have him bragging about how easy he could beat me. Valver and a few choice mods should do the trick.
