valver would eat it all day long,

Bwahahahahahahaha, thats the funniest thing i have read all day long......

Look, 106 gti - 120bhp, weight approx 900kg, and the golf 16v, 139bhp, weight 930kg

this means that the power to weight ratio is

106gti: 133.333 bhp/tonne
16gti:   149.46 bhp/tonne

This means that in a straight line the golf would win, no questions asked...However, on the track, totally stock and i think that you would find that due to the small size a nibleness of the 106 it would win the race because the Golf is a larger/slightly higher car the handling charateristic would be poorer than the 106.  Remember this is for totally stock cars.

Erm, the 16v is not 930kgs. The original 16v is nearer 1000kgs and the later 16v is 1100kgs. (When i say later - you know those big bumpers everyone has - they weigh a ton).

(for ref VW Motoring Feb 87 has the "new" 16v at 970kgs or so).

tbh honest who gives a sh!t any peeennnaaarse can drive fast in a straight line! i think a well sorted slammed 106 would cane a golf on a track but it does depend who is behind the wheel.. when i imported some cars couple of years ago i was on the a12 and a 106 rallye came by the side of me (i later found it was on bodies and flowed up etc but thats not the point) i at this time was in an evo 6 tommi mak and from 60mph to about 90 he was with me and i was shocked to say the least.... these are quick cars but as slick pointed out they rust and fall to bits, and owning a golf in my eyes isnt about traffic light gp's its a way of life..

and standard 8v's do 112mph by the book so 130mph is good going!

So using tinmans weights we have

139bhp, weight average 1035kg, 134.5bhp/tonne.

So the it will be a very close race in a straight line and round a track im pretty sure that the 106bgti will be quicker than the mk2gti.  We also have to remeber that the mk2 is now 15 years old and the 106 is a next generation car ( safety mods, etc) so therefore the 106 will be hitting the scrap heap soon

Also we all know that the 8v will be far quicker than both becasue of its substantially better torque at lower revs and superior speedo accuracy
