Yes it's possible and takes 15 mins if you have the right tool and no rusted/damaged bolts.

Ok so i have changed the ecu which did actually take 20 mins or so  but i'm getting the same codes especially the pump one so i am guessing the actual pump is at fault! if i replace this do i need to use vag com to get it all working again or can i just bleed the system and off i go again ? cheers

Hey dragongreen did you replace the ecu with identical part number and letter at the end, reason i ask is i believe i need to change my abs/ecu and last time i tryed i swapped mine out for a replacement with same number but different letter and this didnt work ,incorrectly coded or something   :undecided:

There is a question in this thread I would also like answered.

When bleeding the brakes do you need Vag Com to bleed the ABS pump? Or will it bleed using the 'normal' procedure of simply bleeding each brake caliper.

The reason I ask is to try to shed some light on Dragongreen's question, plus I know that my old Vx Omega needed Tech2 (the equivalent of Vag Com) to bleed the pump.

Alright mate yeah exactly the same it's taken me ages to track one down as it only seems a select few vr6's or late 16v's have the pump and ecu i have  so after seeing one advertised on the net i had it however the ecu seems to not be the problem so i am now going to try the abs pump which it came with and hopefully sort my problem out  cheers

Ihope someone can help us on this as i would like to jsut get on and do it myself rather than pay a garage just because they have full vag com  if its a case of bleed as normal i will do it at weekend

Mike how come you thought you needed to replace the abs module?

It was something i read somewhere maybe on here they said to try a different ecu first with the code i'm getting and you can sometimes try and fix your original one somehow following a guide but as it turns out it hasn't cured it so it may well actually be the pump this time there quite common to fail on mk3's i believe  i'l update if i manage to get it done getting fed up of no brakes now and again etc lucky i'm used to older cars where brakes hardly existed

How do you know the replacement ecu hasn't failed?

I replaced one and it had the same faults.

This is true but it was bought in confidence and was said to be in working order and is throwing up the same codes apart from 2 i think it is and the pumps do sound to be the culprit i'd rather replace both and take my chances but finding the exact ecu was hard enough this time so doubt i'l find another anytime soon i'm confident its the pump now
