35 or Not..
« on: 07 March 2012, 14:55 »
Guys, don't want to be shot down here and have a thread of criticism, just thought I'd get some level opinion on a situation:

Currently, have a 35 arriving in the next 2 to 3 weeks - specs as per my signature below

One of the dealers I had been talking to has offered me a standard GTI with the same spec as below, but no cruise control with an addition of dynaudio and ACC. The discount they are offering is v v good and enough to tempt me (they even offered to cover loss of deposit from other dealer).

Now for the bit that will irk some of you: The running costs will be lower with the std GTI, which is always a bonus in London...but will I miss the extra 25bhp? Only other thing is that the standard GTI comes with 17 " standard. I know many of you throw the idea of economy out the window, but it is a issue for all of us in some way or another....lower insurance, tax etc...is it worth it?

Thanks in advance.

Should just add that the original 35 was not a factory order for me, I just picked up someones dropped order.

Only you can answer it really, you might save £200 a year on fuel and tax depending on your miles, insurance, proberly nothing in it. Why did you order Ed35 in the first place is the question you have got ask yourself.

It's easy enough to retrofit cruise control, you have the added benefit of ACC and dynaudio which are both great.

Let's face it your tax and insurance will be a little less with the standard GTI and you can always remap it if needed.

Stick with the Edition 35.

You have ordered it for a reason.

The running costs on the GTI are a bit better but the Edition 35 hardly breaks the bank. In terms of pace, it's not so much the 25hp that makes the Edition 35 feel quicker so much as the turbo characteristics. The bigger turbo on the Edition 35 pulls harder to the red line although the GTI can be more responsive.

Go for the Edition - it'll mean more to you in 2-3 years than the extra £750 quid.

To add, the GTI represents a better deal for the money, so some will say go for that. But for others the special status of the Edition car outweigh the price premium.

With my sensible head on, I'd take the GTI and pocket the difference, however every time you saw a 35, you'd regret it. You obviously ordered a 35 because it's what you wanted and you could afford it, so I'd stick with it.

These sort of cars are an emotional purchase, so cost and economy sort of goes out the window. If you were worried about the cost, then you would have ordered a diesel Match.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I personally went for a GTI over an Ed 35. There are things I like about both.

First, the Ed 35 can be remapped via OBD port (AFAIK) where as the later GTI's can't, the ECU has to be opened for them to be mapped. That's not put me off a remap but I'm sure it will put many off.

The GTI has a newer engine, and hence less tax, better economy, and alongside slightly less power, cheaper insurance (which is quite important for me given my age). The Ed35 has the same lump from the S3, R etc but detuned a bit. I think it will map to around 300 bhp. The GTI engine "should" be more refined. I can't comment as I haven't really driven the S3/R/35 engine, at least not for a few years. There's very little in them 0-60.

The Ed 35 has darker tints, darker lights (they are tinted) and some fancy side skirts and door sills. I'm personally not fussed about any of them. The side skirts are nice BUT I quite like the black GTI skirts and they certainly don't look rubbish, which is what I was worried about so I considered fitting 35/bluemotion/R skirts afterwards. I will no longer bother doing this.

I personally don't like the Ed35 wheels and I love the Monza Shadows which is another reason I went for the GTI. Yeah the Monzas are common as muck on the GTI's but that's because they look good!

It's a difficult decision, but the wheels + newer engine made me go for the GTI. Residuals will probably be better on the Ed35 but that remains to be seen. Maybe people will pay more for economy ? I'd be interested to know what balloon VW quote on a similar spec GTI vs 35.

Either way, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Also bear in mind if you want 18" monzas they will set you back a fair few quid cause if i had a brand new car i would want brand new wheels and not reps.

I didn't realise they ED35 had the same engine as the R i would have that over the GTI then personally if it can be mapped up to 300bhp
