cos SEAT are VAG;s 'young and sporty' brand so no need for DSG for their customers

But I'm 38.... which is sort of young and I'm nearing a mid life crisis

Just to add into the mix, there is also the new Seat Leon Cupra to come which may get a DSG option.

But I'd agree with some of the comments on here, the Focus is the current closest rival to the GTI. The power output of the cars will be very similar (with the Ford slightly ahead) and since Ford has lost the 2.5 lump there will no longer be the running costs argument to counter the extra power.

Also the styling of the two cars will be quite similar in that Ford has not quite gone hot hatch crazy like Vauxhall has.

What it will come down to will be the badge. I'm not a badge snob but I prefer the way Volkswagen does things to Ford. I also prefer the feel of Volkswagen - it just feels better quality.

And then there's the DSG, which for me is crucial. I wouldn't go back to a manual car now.

Time to satisfy the need for a car you always wanted when you were 17 then. For me it was a Mk2 GTI 16V, however if you longed for an Astra GTE back then, you'll be struggling.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

My x nextdoor neighbour has a perfectly restored Mk1 golf GTi sitting in his garage. He spent a small fortune restoring it. Its absolutaly mint. I only saw him drive the car a few times as he came to the conclussion that he didn't actually enjoy driving it compared to his daily car (an Audi S3). His split up with his Mrs now and the car is gathering dust. I'm just waiting for the right time to ask him how much he wants for it. I'm not sure what they are worth?

I hardly ever drive my Mk2. It's all too easy just to jump into one of the other cars and leave the Golf gleaming under its cover in the garage.

What your neighbours Mk1 is worth depends on what someone is prepared to pay for it. If you look on Pistonheads, you'll see a massive variation in prices of cars for sale, but based on the fact that you know the car, I'd be prepared to pay up to £5k for it. You may find cars that are cheaper for sale, but they will be an unknown quantity and could need £1000's spending on them to get them to an acceptable level.

If the new Seat Cupra looks something like this and comes with DSG I'd be tempted to buy one!

Ooooooo, I like that Leon.

Much better than the uncohesive mess that is the current one.

Martin, you do realise you'd have to slum it with a manual gearbox if you got a mk1!!

PM Snoopy, he'd tell you what it's worth. Sold my low mileage mk1 for £3.5k back in 1991 or 92 and I don't think that's a current guide value...
