people keep saying the golf gti is meant to be pitched against the fiesta etc

surely thats the polo gti's market

the R is pitched against the likes of subaru, RS etc. more specialist performance cars.

the gti is IMO definitely pitched against the ST and VXR etc. all FWD, turbocharged 2 litre 'all rounders'. just because its not in the same BHP bracket doesn't mean they don't compete for the same customers.

the only difference is VW has gone for a hot hatch for everyone which does everything - thats always been the GTI selling point. others have come and gone, been faster or whatever but the GTI remains and is still the most desirable hot hatch. they have got the recipe right.

where as the VXR is for people who don't really know about cars but want big figures with no substance.

the renault is THE drivers car with huge performance and features for its price but without the build quality, after sales and customer service/care and reliability always let renaults down. I absolutely love hot renaults but its a shame they let themselves down at the final fence. they have an amazing product but bollox it up with crap dealerships and poor build.

the focus ST is the one which will take sales from the gti. ford really have moved the game on with build quality. our 4 year old focus rattles less than my 2800 mile old GTI. its going be be pretty, well build, more powerful and excellent value.

I'm sure ford are the only manufacture giving the VW boffins sleepless nights.

I think Ford should rebrand the ST to RS. There used to be more than 1 RS model out at the same time, so im sure a top of the range Focus RS could exst besides a lower power RS and do wonders for desirability and residuals.

I don't care what people say but I think that's a seriously nice car. Maybe not in yellow but smart nevertheless.

I've nothing against Vauxhall tbo and the latest Astra's is a really nice shape and more grown up then there previous models.

However their sports models as far as I'm aware are only manual and I need something compariable to DSG to prize me away from VAG.

Badge snobbery means nothing to me personally but reliability and values after three years certainly dose.
Have had a few Astra's as hire cars which seem to creek a lot.
I'm waiting for the mark 7 GTI which you know is going to be far better than the current GTI which is the best car I have driven in 35 years of motoring. The Golf is just so practical  and understated not in your face though some my like that.

That is one 100% correct for me and ive only had the GTI 2 weeks.

ANYONE that is commited to auto's, only REARLY has this choice, and what a good choice it is too
ps
My wife is also a terrible manual box driver and much safer in a auto (no offence to any ladies on here, but true)
I want her to drive / enjoy the GTI aswell and feel much better nowing she has both hands on the wheel

I’ve been driving golfs with DSG for now 5 years now, so when I jump in my wife’s manual car I drive like a complete numpty through the gears.

Hit the nail on the head....if Vauxhall did a auto(and a good one) in the VXR range I'm sure it wud appeal to a bigger market.

I for one like the VXR but find they've shot themselves in the foot by not offering auto or 5drs...

You can't get a Seat Cupra R with DSG also which has always bugged me!

cos SEAT are VAG;s 'young and sporty' brand so no need for DSG for their customers
