DSG Hill start
« on: 07 February 2012, 07:26 »
Hi,
I'm currently awaiting delivery of A GTi Edition 35 with DSG gearbox. Apart from a couple of test drives I've never driven a DSG before, only a manual, so I thought I'd ask a question.  What is the best way of performing a DSG hill start with this car that is safest for me (i.e. so that it doesn't roll back) and kindest to the car?  Although my instinctive reaction would be to hold it on the handbrake, I'm guessing that holding on the footbrake and then changing to the accelerator would be the way to go, with the hill hold function taking care of the roll-back.

Have I got it right or is there a better way?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Use the foot brake then use the accelerator to pull away. The hill hold will apply the brakes for a max of 2 seconds but will release while you apply the power. It is a really good function and works very well.

DSG is fantastic you won't regret it. Also once the car is run in don't forget to try the Launch control, it's a bit of fun to try every now an then

When do you get your ED35 and what is the spec? Mine should be here in early March as I have waited until the bad weather has gone (hopefully).
Current: GTI Edition 35 Candy White 5dr DSG 19" Glendale, RCD510+DAB, Dynaudio, Storage Pack, Parking Sensors

Gone: Edition 35, GTI Mk6, Edition 30, GTI Mk4, GTI Mk3, GTI Mk2 and my favourite the UR quattro
For those that dont know DSG is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox

The car will have hill hold assist. You engage the hand brake on a hill, when you release it,it stays locked until you set off so you don't roll back.As you drive off,the brake will automatically release.

Launch control is superb.  Follow these steps:

1. Wait for the engine/oil to be warm enough (Approx 98 degrees)
2. Turn Off ESP
3. Place in Sport Mode on DSG
4. Place left foot on brake
5. Push right foot flat to the ground
6. The revs will sit on 3k RPM
7. Remove foot from brake and
8. OMFG, rocket ship.......

Sounds interesting! Might have to wait until it's a bit warmer. Currently -20 over here and even with spiked tyres, the roads are like a skating rink!
