mmm ...  two seconds seems about right  :-

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/technology/glossary/hill-hold

I'm just wondering if there's a way of beating that

If I press the accelerator within 2 seconds I get a nasty "graunching / grinding" sound, so I just sit it out now but "feather off" the brake as far as posiible which seems to speed it up slightly.

My previous DSG Golfs did'nt have hill hold and I can't say I'm a fan of it really

Trip to the dealers I reckon as sounds like a problem to me!

I tried the launch and it didn't work. It just revved around 2000 and then made a load of crunching sounds. I've just re-read this thread and you recommend 98 degrees oil temperature. I thought it was 90  :embarassed:    Is this the reason it didn't work? Will it have damaged the car at all?

Sounds like the Launch Control wasn't activated.

With your foot on the brake you should be able to rev the car without any load on the clutch.
The car shouldn't make an attempt to move until you release the brake.

The car just needs to be up to operating temperature so 90 is fine.
I think the reference before was the oil temperature.

I had my foot on the brake, the car in Sports (DSG) and then floored the accelerator. It didnt get above 2000 and was groaning a lot! I'll leave it til warmer weather to try again..

The temp was 93c. With the weather being so cold at the moment, even after an hour of driving it's struggling to get over 90c. Looks like I'll have to wait a month or two before screaching off at the lights!!

But in all seriousness - when do people actually use this "launch" mode? I can imagine the noise it makes, combined with a fair bit of spin is slightly embarrassing. I'm still too self conscious to use the car in "sport" mode, as the screech of the revs as it changes gear on 7000rpm just makes me look as if I don't know how to change gear on a manual car!

As you can guess, I'm not a boy racer!  :nerd:

It doesn't make that much noise, 3k revs doesn't make too much noise and wheel spin isn't that bad either.

Is it true that VW warranty only cover 3 launches or is that just an urban legend?
