Moving from Mk5 Golf to Mk6 status is an upgrade. Better in every way which matters.

The A5 Sportback is a misshapen wheeled cigar with disgustingly obtuse proportions. I would not even consider driving it as it would need oars instead.

The A5's only seem to look good to me in white for some reason.

Oh I quite like the A5s but not in sportback form, any car with more than 2 passenger doors is just wrong anyway.

Dont get the mk6  :lipsrsealed:

How many times did you crash yours ?

I never crashed it once. It was driven in to a few times. Doesnt make up for the poor effort by VW. I would jump back into a mk5 any day... I would never do the same with a mk6.

LMAO!!

I think if I was going down the audi route I would prefer the two door a5 but at the moment need 4 doors otherwise getting the kids in and out is a nightmare.  Some great posts though thanks, think I am more leaning towards the GTI.

Gilly I think SimonPolly was making the point that your car is hardly in the same condition that it left the factory. Regardless of circumstance (or blame) your car has had several impacts which could all account for your bodywork issues and water leaks. Then there is your remap on the car which - although now removed - may have accounted for (in part if not in full) the engine issues you had. If you had kept your car fully standard with no impacts then your argument against VW would be greatly strengthened.

Back to the OP

The A5 is a much bigger car. Personally I prefer the comparatively compact dimensions of the Golf. It's just the right size IMO. As a standard car with 210 PS it is very balanced and can be great fun to drive. A remap unlocks more power and can change the character of the car (but this applies to any car really so it's not MK6 GTI/D specific).

As for coming from a Mk5,  the Mk5 always felt like a solid car when I was in it. There wasn't however much of a premium feel and it certainly wasn't going to win any awards for design. Looks wise the Mk6 is kind of the same (with a typical VW layout and similar if not the same switchgear) but the overall impression has changed from just a solid feeling hatch to a much more premium feeling car. Spec it right and I seriously doubt you'll experience any hardship choosing a VW Mk6 over an Audi - so there is a definite improvement coming from the mk5. And IMO the Mk5 was/is a great car, so I'm not saying this to bash the Mk5 but instead to present it as more of a measure to demonstrate how far VW has come.

I've never understood why anyone would buy a 20 foot long car and only want 2 doors, unless they're buying a £100k plus GT car with a massive V12 engine or something.

Just re the spec, i;d probably buy a second hand one, are there any specific options you would look for? My current car is pretty much a  basic spec gti.

Are there any specific extras you fancy? The more flexible you are on spec the easier it will be to pick up a deal. Most things can easily be retrofitted and there are plenty of how to guides on the forums.
