Upgrade From Mk 5 to Mk 6 Advice needed
« on: 31 August 2011, 22:24 »
HI

I'm new to the forum but I would be very grateful for the benefit of any advice you could provide.

I am currently running a MK 5 Gti which I have been very pleased with but now i'm thinking of changing it. I'm thinking about a mk 6 but am also considering possibly switching to either an S line  Audi A4 or A5 sportback as part of me thinks it would be good to have a complete change.

I'm very likely in the wrong place for advice on Audis but I would be very grateful for any advice re the golf. Specifically i'm interested in whether the Mk 6 is much of an improvement on the 5 and essentially would  you consider it to be a worthwhile move to trade up. I haven't driven a mk 6 yet but I had a look around one the other day and the interior seemed to have been improved upon.

Any views appreciated.

Many thanks

Get A5 sportback if you want a compleet change , but I will say the Mk6 is much better car than the MK5 also better cabin and drives nicer more refined !!

Wellcome to the forum.

Tiguan quicker than the Golf

Yeah the MK6, it is nicer inside for sure than the MK5.  My last 3 cars have been Audi's, A3 Sporback S-Line was my last car.  I have no regrets getting a Mk6 GTI instead of it.

Rich

If you can live with the A5 sportback then go for it.  The Golf is a beautiful car but I'd say the A5 pips it!

The caveat is what engine and what spec.

3.0 TDi Quattro S-Line is the one to go for.....

There are faster cars, more refined cars......

However, I've just ordered my second mk6 gti after having a mk5. Difference from mk5 to mk6 felt quite a lot to me.

I considered the a5 sportback as my dad has one. Beautiful car, just very different drive altogether. Gti feels like a go kart in comparison.

Current: Clubsport45, white, DCC.

Past: Mk5 gti blue graphite, mk6 gti carbon grey, mk6 gti edition 35 candy white, Mk7 pp gti tornado red, 2016 Audi S3 sportback, 2019 7.5 Golf R.

Guys, thanks for the responses so far. very interesting.

Re the A5 I thought I would probably go for the 2 litre petrol rather than the diesal mainly because i don't do that many miles and don't think i'd recoup the benefits of the diesal over time. Also I've read quite a bit about DPF issues with diesals causing problems.

Part of the reason for considering the A5 is the practicalicalities of having a hatchback, seemed to be quite a good compromise, but i'm not sure whether i want to waft about so hence the Gti is still on my list.

IMHO

Having driven quite a few A5's and sportbacks (2wd) I agree, when you say they drive "different" do you mean "unless your slowly cruising around they are not good, struggle for grip and when pushed hard everything goes to sh1t"?

I loved my mk5 gti, it was so well balanced, I'm not sure the mk6 is quite as perfect as a drivers car but in all other ways it's better, quieter, trim is a good deal better etc

Go drive the cars you want and give them a good seeing to if that's your thing
