The 16V is QUICKER then the 8v END OF STORY.

Everyone needs to stop with the 8v being quicker round town quicker this, quicker my arse.

It's just down to what you prefer and everyone is gonna prefer the 16v.

How is the 8v in anyway quicker then the 16v?

On paper and on a dyno or even a track i'm sure the 16v will be quicker, but on a normal road with a normal driver i don't think there is much in it thats all.

I'm sure there are owners on here who know better than me, but i base my view on driving a lot of different cars of varying capability and power outputs, i'll get myself a go in a 16v and see for myself.
BTW i'm not claiming the 8v will pee all over a 16v, just that it won't get away easily either.

My point is after having 8v 16v vr6 is that around town the 8v and vr6 are easier to drive because you don't have to drop it down into 2nd gear. driving through my town center, there is some small tight bends and in the 16v I had to use 2nd, whereas the 8v and vr6 I can leave in 3rd and 4th. nothing about whats faster.

Your 16v probably wasnt working properly then, mine will quite happily sit at 30mph in 5th gear and pull along nicely, even after having the flywheel lightened.

don't get me wrong the 16v is quicker than a 8v.

It's just low down the rev range a 16v doesn't work as well. It's like 125cc 2stoke, they don't work unless there in the power-band.

Frankly that is just bull.

As argued on many, many forums, at no point does a mk3 8v make more torque or power than a 16v - why is that hard to understand?!  If an 8v making less power and torque than a 16v (at any part of the rev range) is perfectly driveable at lower speeds in high gears, why on earth would a 16v be any different.  It's such a pointless argument.  Ergo my comment about your 16v possibly not being in the best condition/running right.  If it is, there is NO reason why you cant drive it in top gear at lower speeds.

If you are trying to hammer the engine at low speeds in a high gear then of course it is going to struggle - right gear for the right situation of course - and that is where the 16v excels. Perfectly driveable, like the 8v at lower speeds, but so much more to offer when you do want to go somewhere = where the 8v is puffless.

Have you had a 8v gti, 16v gti and vr6? And then drove the same route daily for years? all I said was I can leave my 8v in 3rd where as I had to drop down to 2nd in my 16v because it was sluggish.

So far as i can see if you want a good daily driver that won't break the bank either an 8v or 16v will do the job but the 16v's are a bit rarer and command higher prices so to settle for a tidy well looked after 8v is a good compromise and if you want the fastest and can afford it you'll have a VR6.
