Thanks for the advice - very useful. :)

Just as an extra query, the offside wing has no sign of rust *yet*. I'd best buy some waxoyl and line that one asap.

Is there any modifications / insulation etc that can be carried out to the wheel arch / plastic wheel arch liner to prevent the problem starting there?

My silver 05 has the rust on the front near-side arch, but you should also check inside and around the boot badge area as this seams to be common as well(yes mine has it there also!)Have had driver side wing and both rear quarters repaired under warranty in march, the other bits were OK but have now started to blister.Took the car into local dealer at the start of June and still waiting for an answer from VW.

Rear quarters? Christ...I thought it was just the fronts that this was common on.

Touch wood the rust is only evident (As far as I can tell without removing the liners, which is going to be the next job, once I have some waxoyl) on the near side drivers so far...

But my car does have the white worm on the wheel caps (just ordered some more from a friend in the trade) and, after washing it today, I've noticed that the lacquer has started to peel from the front bumper panel. My car is cursed!

Quick update as per other thread to state that the VW Customer Services Manager contacted me this morning (think his name is Ahmed - apologies if he reads this and I'm wrong). Was very proactive and courteous and took up the matter after one of his team members referred it to him.

The upshot is they have agreed a 100% coverage of repair costs for the car, which I'm obviously satisfied with (I would say pleased but obviously I'd rather the issue hadn't occurred!) as this is the outcome I had expected from the initial claim. I'm glad that VW have taken responsibility for the issue - it's just a shame that I had to spend so long having a polite disagreement with a member of their customer service team initially before they agreed to do so. Suffice to say though that, given my awareness of how other manufacturers treat their customers, I'm satisfied with this outcome. :)

After giving the car a wash I have found even more rust!
The driver side wheel arch has begun to bubble again(it was repaired under warranty about 6 months ago)
also spots along the top of the sills
Back to the dealer and I got the following:
Wings: VW want the dealers to try a repair first but the guy at the body-shop says they would rather replace them.
Sills: This is what he called 'Zinc Inclusion' somthing to do with the galvinizing.
The up-shot is I will have to wait even longer for VW to think about repairing it.

Gutted to hear this Silver-Leon - hope they replace the wing this time. This is my worry about the repair myself. Best of luck with getting it sorted.

Its a bummer, I bought the car as gift for my good lady to replace her 2004
SEAT ibiza which had done 130,000 miles which apart from the stone chips
was rust free. When talking to the body shop manager he was of the opinion
that VW should re-call them as it is now so wide-spread.I have checked my
SEAT Leon for the same problem but all looks good, helped by the big plastic
liner on the end of the wing(no leaves to clean out!)

What year Golfs is this most common on? I'm wondering if they fixed the rubbin issue in later models  :undecided:
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

I take it that this problem applies to all MK'5's regardless of model.
Also if VW agree to fix even only one persons car are they not setting a precetent so that all cars will have to be fixed?
