Just had an e-mail from vw about the corrosion on my sill, they will pay 100% of the cost.  Quite impressed with this, they got back to me in eight days and I am now just waiting for a time to get it into the bodyshop.  Good work VW, I was expecting more hassle than this.

Pleased to hear, I had no trouble getting 100% either must be new policy to just do the work without the hassle, It took 6 weeks for them to get back to me though

Just bought a 2007 Golf and now seen these posts - very worrying

Prevention is better than the cure so if i remove the liners and paint underseal on the inner lip edge (refitting liners when dry)  will this stop it happening?

It can only help doing a bit of work to try and prevent it but it will probably happen sooner or later.  Seems to be the early cars now becoming affected.  Mines a 2005 plate and is having the work done in a couple of weeks.  Just keep a close eye your arches and get it straight into the dealer as soon as you see any signs of corrosion.

well decided to give mine a check over today while cleaning the calipers

I saw on a forum (can't remember which 1) about the mk4s having rust problems on the front wings and someone posted a pic of a sound deadening pad behind the wing which was acting as a sponge so it was always damp, the conclusion was to cut a couple of inches off the end where it rests on the inside of the wing.
I was suprised to find my 07 has these on the inside as well so decided to cut the ends off as the poster said it was recommended to do this (on the mk4)
I also painted some hammerite type of paint (supposed to prevent rust) on the insides of the wing lips for precaution

Lets hope this stops any future rust problems

Just dropped my car in ar VW for the work to be done on my sill corrosion, hope they get it right first time.  No GTI until Friday, but I do have the luxury of a 1.0 litre VW Fox until then,

Well just picked my car up and the quality of work is top notch, the guys at the bodyshop also repaired along the sill where the paint was bubbling this wasn't even going to be covered as it was classed as wear and tear.  Well chuffed with the quick turnaround.  Hopefully won't need to be seeing VW again anytime soon.
