Martin, hopefully your car will be okay stuck there all alone. At least it's fairly quiet on the roads so hopefully nobody will crash nearby!
And yes, you do want darkened LED rears and no, you don't really need an R. Rs are lovely but ridiculously expensive (unless your company pays a decent amount towards your car thus making it more affordable?) and won't be that much better in snow unless you have winter tyres on anyway (and neither will be any good on sheet ice without studded tyres). A GTI with a re-map will give you similar performance, similar if not better economy and looks just as good unless you really want a mid blue coloured car.
Having said that, if I won the lottery I'd possibly buy a blue R as a runabout!
