I agree with mac7 but will develop this a bit further.
Firstly, the GTD is a slower and cheaper car than the GTi. If this Diesel 'GTD' had equal or better performance, it would usually command a premium price over a GTi. (You will notice most Diesels are more expensive than their petrol equivalents).
Therefore, for a private buyer like me doing approx 7k miles per annum, an EQUIVALENT Diesel makes a poor case for itself. The final end of year costs would probably be similar for these EQUIVALENTS and for my low annual mileage. However, by choosing petrol I feel I  get a more refined car that suits me more.
Asker less of the cheap

Steve, I said cheaper, not cheap. GTD definitely not cheap. 'Less pricey' would have been more PC.

Gone are the days of Diesels being slow, i suspect that most petrol cars would struggle against the BMW 6 cylinder diesel engines.

If your doing sub 10k then yeah i guess i might go for a petrol but diesel torque is addictive. Personally on 20k miles a year i'll stick to high 40's to 50mpg, fuel prices are only going up.

Really like the new car, engine seems more refined from what i remember of the mk4 i had.
