Diseasal is more expensive, it stinks and produces embarassing smoke clouds.

Yes, you get more mpg than a GTI, so what.

Diseasals should be be rated in ypg (yawns per gallon)

I've also just swapped an A3 tdi for a GTI.

You need to get a back to back test drive. You'll immediately spot which has the sharper handling. If you don't get the GTD.

I'm also getting about a 10 mpg drop compared to the A3, but I have to drive sensibly to achieve that. Enthusiastic driving really sucks up fuel!

I get the advantages of diesel for big mileage or as a company car, but for a private buyer driving an average 12,000 miles it only saves you a few hundred quid a year. Personally I'd find that a small price to pay for the additional performance, balance and refinement of the GTI.

I agree with mac7 but will develop this a bit further.

Firstly, the GTD is a slower and cheaper car than the GTi. If this Diesel 'GTD' had equal or better performance, it would usually command a premium price over a GTi. (You will notice most Diesels are more expensive than their petrol equivalents).

Therefore, for a private buyer like me doing approx 7k miles per annum, an EQUIVALENT Diesel makes a poor case for itself. The final end of year costs would probably be similar for these EQUIVALENTS and for my low annual mileage. However, by choosing petrol I feel I  get a more refined car that suits me more.

If this is a challenge then I accept, I'll be using my old 535d non performance diesel and I'm happy to challenge you in any of the following area's:

0-60
0-90
60-0
90-0
50-100
50-120
70-160

Or any other speed test you can think of.

Yes it's been mapped which is fair, and I think it's as sh!t as you do which means that if you loose your gti is far worse than a non performing smokey old crappy diesel.....

I don't know where you live but I suggest a meeting in the middle.

535d ^^^^ what about a 1/4 mile race or a 0-30mph up a snow covered road with a gradient of between  5% and 10% with standard road tyres

Very good but not quite in the "spirit" of non-sporting diesel vs the fastest thing known to man now is it?

But I like that you recognise that's the o n l y way he has any hope....

0-30 and 1/4 mile accepted in the challenge.

And the great new is I have racelogic timing equipment so that we can all see the results in black and White :-)
