GTI vs GTD fuel economy
« on: 01 December 2010, 18:10 »
Still looking for GTI / GTD after I passed on the GTD I had previously found. My heart says GTI, head says GTD but I've had Diesels for past 8 years or thereabouts and have got used to the mid range torque and good fuel economy. So am wondering what the 'real world' economy figs are for mostly shortish local trips and the odd longer run.

As a benchmark I currently drive A3 Sportback 2.0TDi (140) S-tronic which (on the computer) has averaged 44mpg over the past 14k  miles. My annual mileage is only about 8/9k p.a. so need to factor that in also.

..and whist I'm at it I'm also thoroughy undecided about whether to go DSG again or back to a manual !

Help please !

Had both, DSG GTI 23 mpg that I loved and DSG GTD 48 mpg that I love, GTD sounds good for a diesel and it goes well - looks good too as does the GTI but I'd say the GTI has the edge, but only just.

Fuel economy was my main requirement so it had to be the GTD as I'm driving 80 plus miles per day.

I find the tdi's a lot easier to sell used - I have a share in a used car company and I know that we can sell as many GT TDI's as we can get our hands on! The GTI's we have had have been wonderfull cars but take quite a bit longer to sell, for us, in our market.

real average on mine is 46mpg, the same as my old 170 A3 DSG
I'll be getting another DSG one day but for now I'm lovin the manual,
I've done 20K miles since May and choosing a diesel has saved about £800

VW should do heated streering wheels an option, like the new Range Rover I used yesterday, I'd take it. its frezzin round here.

As Doc shows the fuel con is better so you can double you mpg with the GTD. As for needing out and out performance in the UK isn't worth the extra fuel costs. The traffic in the UK is s**t to many vehicles for the size of the UK.

I use mine 70% local running and mine isn't brilliant compared with what VW say.

There have been many threads on forms taking about fuel con just have a read. The choice is yours.

I too came from a VAG 140bhp diesel but in a MK5 Golf GT TDi 4Motion. I easily managed 55 mpg.

I do exactly the same journeys in my GTi and I see 45-48 mpg so only a 10mpg drop for another 70bhp !

I always use premium fuels and cruise control and keep between 65 and 75 mph.

My head also said GTD but my heart won. In the end it was an easy decision though and I have never regretted it.

Mk6 GTi - returned to leasing company after 3 great years and replaced with :

Mk5 GTi - Edition 30 - Revo 1 and some tweaks - 310 bhp. Its a better car than the Mk6  - Now sold and replaced with :

Mk6 R - Rising Blue 5 Door. Won't be standard 270bhp for long

Family Car : Mercedes ML420 with 360 bhp
Looking at Porsche Macan as replacement

I had a hard choice when I changed my car last year, have always loved my fast Golfs, on my 4th....2 GTI's and 2 TDI's!

I think a lot of people miss the point with the GTD. I'm heavy footed and accept that a carefully driven MK6 GTI is mega economical if you drive it nicely. Problem is, in a GTI I will burn fuel for fun!

Difference is, in my GTD, which is quick and sounds good, I thrash it to bits and it still has an average of 44mpg after 16k miles! Simple fact is that it saves me at least a tank of juice a month at £60+ a pop. Of course people will say...I can do 35, 40, 45 mpg in my GTI but thats not drivin like I drive car!!!!!!
MK4 2.0 GTI!, MK4 1.8T GTI, MK5 GT TDI 140, MK6 GTD.....loved em all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't.
I really don't care about the mpg. Love spending my money and hate the Diesel rattle. :smug:

My next car: A red BMW M3 Coupe in 2012.
