they get a bad rep mainly because the blinker brigade jumps on the hate wagon, thats nothing new, they are a really good car tho if you get a good un, especially for the price you can pick them up, mines never gone wrong, never gets advisorys come MOT time either (how many of you mk2 owners can say the same eh?) yeah its not as quick as other hot hatches iv had but i much prefere driving mine than what i do the mk 4 which is alot faster, i will say tho, i find the mk3 8v is just as fast as a un mapped mk4 turbo, the MK's are very slow, obvioulsy its easy to make them faster so thats the good thing about them.
god knows how any mk2 8v owner can comment about performance tho, they suck too, as said in a previous thread today, back in the day if you had a 8v mk2, you were laughed at. and iv seen them rust like hell too and they are around the same age as my mk 3 which is a 93 car, totally rust free!
the latter golf 3's were suspect tho i will agree, the galvernisation process must have been poop, just as it was on the same era polo.
I think on a whole its the cars on here not selling, theirs too much choice out their, its a buyers market why by a sh!tter when you can have a good solid example for little more.
RE the tailgate, that was a recall as far as i was told something to do with fauly window seals
