yeah suprised at nicks reply thier  typical golfgti.co.uk attitude that

no rot on mine what so ever, their was little rust on the 16v i sold recently too and my mates VR6 is also rot free.
this black mk 3 has been the most reliable and solid feeling VW iv had and theirs been a few including new MK4's, the mk4s iv had (3 of them) have been the most un reliable but mainly for silly electrical faults.

id say the worst VW for rust is those older polos, they are terrible for rot

really does all depend on the car itself, look at adams he sold for example, nicks closing statement re the snotters rings true tho, its the same with many cars is this, look at all the older hot hatches now that had got to the point of been worth naff all (XR3I's etc) a good one now could set you back a small fortune

re MAF's never had a problem on any iv seen, nor hear about it on the forums :undecided:

I think MK3s have a bad rep.. some of this may be that the mk3 8v for example is under powered compared to its predecessors (power to weight). Bear in mind the MK4 is not much better even though its turbo charged.  Its slightly unfair to say that a mk3 is a rot box, other mks can be just as bad and a lot of it is due to bad ownership.  Ive seen a 20yo Lada in mint condition because the owner looked after it.   Why do mk3s get some much stick on here?  I wouldnt have one because i'm a true lover of old skool and i think out of the box the mk3 was too big with too many toys to carry over its predecessors engines. but thats just me.

It's a sad fact that MKIII's rot worse than any another Golf MK. Sills and bootlids being the worst. My Dad's VR6 had to have a new bootlid under warranty after it started rotting when it was only 2 years old!

so as said earlier then, when we are only left with the really well looked after ones, they will be worth money!

I think it boils down to status too, people give respect to mk1's and 2s for being the daddys of the GTI.  Mk1 for being the original, mk2 for being the improvement with the addition of 16v for example.  Mk3???.. well got rid of the boxy design so to many was nicer to look at especially when it first came out, and although the seats wrent good for you, i believe comfort and safety were high on the list with options off AC and airbags etc.  but the engines, nothing new really till they bought out the VR6, but then thats not a GTI. so we skip to the MK4 its cheap now and turbo charged, not that much quicker but for your money you can tell people you have a golf gti turbo! where would you put your money if you were buying your first GTI and only had a couple of grand????? Its still sad though that you can get a mk3 GTI 16v for less than half that, spend the rest on it and you'd have a fantastic car!

they get a bad rep mainly because the blinker brigade jumps on the hate wagon, thats nothing new, they are a really good car tho if you get a good un, especially for the price you can pick them up, mines never gone wrong, never gets advisorys come MOT time either (how many of you mk2 owners can say the same eh?) yeah its not as quick as other hot hatches iv had but i much prefere driving mine than what i do the mk 4 which is alot faster, i will say tho, i find the mk3 8v is just as fast as a un mapped mk4 turbo, the MK's are very slow, obvioulsy its easy to make them faster so thats the good thing about them.

god knows how any mk2 8v owner can comment about performance tho, they suck too, as said in a previous thread today, back in the day if you had a 8v mk2, you were laughed at. and iv seen them rust like hell too and they are around the same age as my mk 3 which is a 93 car, totally rust free!

the latter golf 3's were suspect tho i will agree, the galvernisation process must have been poop, just as it was on the same era polo.

I think on a whole its the cars on here not selling, theirs too much choice out their, its a buyers market why by a sh!tter when you can have a good solid example for little more.

RE the tailgate, that was a recall as far as i was told something to do with fauly window seals

I'd just like to point out I have nothing against MKIII's in general. I was just stating they rust badly compared to other Golfs. Compared to similar aged fords however they're much hardier

Guy, you'll be alright san. Your's is proper straight and tidy and has always been pampered.
