Thanks for the encouragement

I'm annoyed at spending what I have on the 8v but at least I guess it's retained some originality. I could have done it cheaper but figured I'd be better off getting a head overhaul so at least I know that's sorted for now. Best to do it properly rather than cut corners.

Damn thing needs 2 new tyres and a new exhaust too
Well its good to know that dispite funds being pants you are still determined not to bodge anything!  How much exhaust needs replacing?.... if its quite a bit, it might be worth looking for a second hand stainless so you dont have to worry about it again.  tony_ack was selling a complete system for an 8v for 80 notes!.. thats probably the same price for a new rust prone OEM backbox! might be worth dropping him a PM?

Cheers for the heads up mate but I've already sorted one I think. With any luck it'll be reasonably subtle!

great thread and a gorgeous motor you have there mate.

i too have a mk2 8v 3dr in tornado red. trying to get it somewhere looking like yours. so far i have only really done my exhaust, big bumper conversion and sourced a set of Ronal LS's.

i shall keep an eye on your thread, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment. Ah, Ronal LS's - I love those wheels! If only I could afford a set. Wanted some before I'd even found my mk2

After a good couple of months off of the road I finally got round to doing something on the mk2. Have been working like hell to raise some funds towards it, some of it from the overdraft at the moment but should be able to pay it off over the summer .

I've been slowly collecting parts again to sort the headgasket woes out. Decided to rebuild the top end so sourced a rebuilt cylinder head, and a massive box of associated parts from VWspares. Work done includes valve guides, stem seals etc etc and a genuine waterpump.

I toyed with the idea of doing the work myself but chickened out in the end and a got a VW specialist in on the case . While it was in for the head work, I thought I'd make use of the 4 post ramp there so the exhaust was upgraded to a Jetex 3 box system as the old one was past it's best. Undecided on it yet; I'm not sure if it's a tad chav but it sounds ok. Not too loud but noticeably louder over a stock one. The 2 box one must be a canon! Was also disappointed with the Powerflex exhaust mounts as one snapped on the first outing  :undecided:

Spent the whole of yesterday cleaning and polishing the car. Managed to get tornado red back rather than pink . Shame the pics don't really do the colour justice. You can see how pink it was before:

Think that's pretty much where I am up to at the moment. I hope nothing breaks for a few months as I am now officially skint! Loads of odds and ends left to do though including headlight loom, rear discs, fit the tailgate, get the rear wiper working and sourcing a black interior carpet.

Thanks Nick.

Shame it's got to go back to the garage for the 3rd time  :undecided: Something isn't right with the timing - don't know if it's cam or ignition but it feels flat across the rev range, judders intermittently in 4th and 5th and pops like a group B rally car on downshifts

I had same as you... baffled me for ages, after messing with trying to line everything up it turned out the cam belt had slipped a tooth! tentioner had got a bit seized, changed it and all was good.... ??

Cam timing is ok and the ignition timing has been redone - judder has gone. Runs a lot smoother now but I'm getting quite high oil temps  :undecided: Also realised the cambelt cover was fubbard and rubbing the alternator belt. Could have been nasty if some plastic got lodged in the cambelt pulleys! Taken the top cover off for now but have a new one from VW to go on.
