Finished the waxoiling today at long last - was rather spaced out from all the fumes from the Dinitrol  Happy that all arches, sills, fuel filler etc were completely immaculate and rot free  :smug:. Was a little worried what I'd find if I went rust hunting. However do have a little bit of rot starting behind the front wings which sucks. Will have to get that sorted somewhen.

Arches all cleaned up nicely. Seemed a shame to cover them up with underseal/ stonechip but this isn't a show car by a long shot

Will continue tomorrow as I got called away to work on the family wagon (aka french piece of sh*t).

Major set back today  :undecided:

Headgasket test proved positive so golf is coming off of the road indefinitely until I figure out what to do.

The car is way to nice to let a HG get in the way. I've never done one a MKII but I've done plenty of old skool minis and if you take your time and follow the instructions it's not that bad.

Cheers, I'm weighing up my options at the moment. Can't say I'm surprised it's gone really as the cars done 152k. Odd though as it's always run hotter than it should but never hot enough to cause a major problem. I had none of the HG tell tale signs.

Been thinking about it past couple of hours over a cup of coffee. I avoid garages at all costs if I can help it but have never taken on any serious engine work before. I've had a quote from pretty much the only garage I'm willing to take my cars too and he reckoned about £400 to do all the work I wanted. He's a VW expert and has done a few bits on it before. Either going to be top end rebuild, replacing the current headgasket, lifters as one sticks, and do the waterpump too. This option would mean I'd have the car back reasonably quickly as it's my daily.

Thought about sourcing another PB lump but decided against it. Better the devil you know in my opinion.

My last option was to sorn it and ABF the car. Not sure how I'd do this, maybe myself, maybe a garage (I doubt I could afford that). Also the hassle of sourcing a good engine, finding a crane/ place to work etc but perks in the respect that there would be more power.

Plenty of head scratching really  :undecided: The car won't be leaving my possession though and I certainly won't be breaking it. Student Overdraft is going to take a bit of a pounding

Might be worth seeing if there is a MKII Savvy member local to you who could give you a hand do it yourself. These sorts of things are always easier with 2 people to bounce ideas around and give encouragement.

After much debate and thinking over the past fortnight I think I've decided to sort the current engine out. ABF's have come into the equation and have been offered a rather nice low mileage 8v with lots of performance parts, but at costly price for the power. As annoying as it is, I have to get the car back on the road and a rebuild is the fastest, but not most economical way.

I'm putting together a parts list for a top end overhaul - does anyone have opinions on what I should go genuine on?

Genuine
Waterpump
Expansion tank and cap
Filter
G12
Synta 10/40

Non genuine
Headgasket kit (VWspares - Elring)
Headbolts x10 (Febi)
Cam followers (Febi) (If I rebuild current head)
Valve cover gasket (Febi)

Other than fluids, anything else I should need? Any other jobs people can recommend are done at the same time? Stem seals and cambelt already been done. I'm also trying to source a rebuilt head locally but haven't found much yet.

Well, I am now officially skint. Overdraft has taken a pounding until I can pay off a chunk of it in the summer. Have just finished ordering up all the parts I need. Not cheap  :lipsrsealed:

On the plus side this lovely reconditioned head is on it's way to me, along with a big box of associated headgasket parts

Thanks for the encouragement

I'm annoyed at spending what I have on the 8v but at least I guess it's retained some originality. I could have done it cheaper but figured I'd be better off getting a head overhaul so at least I know that's sorted for now. Best to do it properly rather than cut corners.

Damn thing needs 2 new tyres and a new exhaust too
