Got a nice electrical gremlin from the MOT - drove it back last night late and the horn sounds whenever I turn right. Highly amusing on roundabouts

Pulled the fuse for now, will have to sort another time.

That got me giggling!

Was quite funny  Sorted it yesterday - turned out the column had some play in it. Tightened up a screw and it solved the play and the problem. Must have just worked loose enough while the car was on the ramps or something.

Lovin the car mate, i'll have another mk2 one day!! Although the thread title says 'on a student budget' and then you start talking about airports and buying rallye interiors, i thought students could only afford pot noodles??!!

Cheers  The airport was the only holiday I've ever been on abroad lol, went on a super tight budget trip to greece with the gf. The interior was picked up for a good price paid for from flogging bug parts I had left etc. I had a small amount of cash left to play with as the golf cost a fair bit less than I sold the bug for.

As for the pot noodles well yeah pretty much, I go without other stuff to fund the car. Holiday work funds the bills and anything left over goes on the golf usually.

looking good that mate

Thanks

Thank you for the kind words

Itching to get cracking on a list of jobs that's built up but will have to wait a month or so until easter. Hopefully have some reasonable updates then. Have far far too much work at the mo for anything car related.

Came home to a rather nice pile of bit that have collected while I've been away.

- Oil and filter
- G12++ coolant
- Coolant flange
- Vacuum hoses
- Smoked indicators and side repeaters
- Uprated headlight loom
- VDO gauge loom
- VDO T-piece
- Dinitrol waxoil

Best get cracking!

Thought I'd start with the easy stuff and give the car a quick oil change. All going dandy until the oil filter refused to budge  After a lot of swearing and most of the afternoon gone, it finally came off. Ended up removing the rad, fan etc to get the clearance for some mole grips. Looks like I'll be doing the coolant system tomorrow then

Thanks, could say the same about your 8v though - beast of a machine!

Disappointingly not had much chance to work on the car again due to some temp work. Bad loosing the little spare time I have but good to be earning some funds. Itching to get cracking with some proper updates. Mind you, weather has been sh1te anyway!

Managed to get the cooling system flushed and refilled again. Dishwasher'ed the coolant reservoir to try and clean it up but didn't really make much difference. New coolant flange went on as the car has been loosing a little water. Hopefully this will have solved it as the seal looked rather fubar'd. (Rubbish phone pic but it's screwed )

Car is running noticeably smoother with an oil change and the temps have dropped a bit which is always good. Roll on evenings with daylight left!

One week left of work before I get a week or so to crack on with the mk2 but managed to do a few hours in today. Please excuse the phone pics, my camera is out on loan.

Couldn't be bothered to start anything taxing so decided to start waxoiling with Dinitrol. Using spray cans instead of the gun and seems ok to work with - much better than the hammerite stuff. Have been dreading going deeper into the depths of the mk2 rust spots but luckily nothing nasty. Yet...

Rear seats out and door cards off. Other than 20 odd years worth of dust/dirt and crap seems ok. Looked like someone had already been in there unless mk2's were cavity waxed in the factory? Sunroof seems all good too but did smear a little wax around the channels.

Waxoiled being careful not to block the drain holes up.

Under the rear seats is still nice and tidy

Boot floor and spare wheel well is all good

Original boot sticker

Space saver looks unused

Thought I best do something about the outside! Joys of working somewhere out in the sticks  Before..

And after a quick clean up...

Could do with a polish really but mechanicals need sorting first
