One £70 cable later!
To be continued...
....Right, had a sh!tty day at work as half the staff buggered off early and left the remaining peeps to look after the shop on our own. which was carnage.
Got home and started to remove the old cable. Unfortunally Haynes don't make a "mk2 golf with 02A box and 20vT engine" manual yet, so I had to do the remove bolts, remember where they came from and rebuild process which actually worked quite well this time.
Started off removing the heatshield to gain access to the cables and the bottom of the shifter. Not too hard. I then disconnected the gearbox end of the broken cable. I had to loosen the exhaust and push it out the way to get the whole shifter mech out of the car leaving a hugh hole in where it use to be and a view of the tarmac from inside the car! Once that was done I dismantantaled the shifter so I could unhook the broken cable and reattach the new one. Simple enough, just very greasey and messy. Once that was done it was bascially a backwards process from before. I bolted it all back together, replaced the boost pipe and intake that I removed to access the cable on the gearbox and went to have a feel of the movement from inside the car.
It's mega smooth now. That cable must have been well past it. It's almost like a new car! I adjusted it slight when I re-attached the cable to the gearbox end. that might have done some good. I'll see what it's like when I drive it futher as I only took it round the block so far. I still need to clamp the exhaust back together and replace the heatsheild as I decided that was enough for 1 night and went out on the piss.
unfortunally I think I had a bit too much to drink and I'm still way over the limit for legal driving to get the car down to work so I'll have to walk.

I took a pic of the shifter on the floor, but can't access my web server so I'll add that later.
